My legs move before my mind does. Through the thick of bodies and heat and smoke, I'm pushing toward the back exit. Away from the noise. Away from the pulsing lights that feel too bright, too loud, too alive when my entire body is spiraling into quiet panic.
"This will cost you your life."
His words echo like a curse.
I lean against the brick wall behind the venue, the cold air biting against my skin. My fingers tremble as I pull out my phone, but I don't dial anyone. I just… stare. My reflection on the black screen looks like someone I don't recognize.
Selena.
He called me that again. And this time, he meant it.
A part of me wants to scream. To throw something. To rip the truth out of someone's throat and demand the world make sense again.
Instead, I just breathe.
Deep and slow, though it feels like the air doesn't reach my lungs.
"Who are you?" I whisper to the night. "Who am I?"
