Melanie Carpenter's gaze lingered on Adrian Desmond's retreating figure. She hoped he would turn around and look back at her—just a glance would be enough—but he didn't.
As the door to the hospital room closed, Melanie's hope, like a candle in the darkness, was snuffed out.
Auntie Pamela saw Adrian leave and entered the room, only to find Melanie with a desolate and gloomy expression. Having cared for Melanie since childhood, Auntie Pamela was intimately familiar with her emotions.
"Miss, does your wound hurt?"
Melanie lowered her head, looking at her hand. Her ring finger was still bare. "Auntie Pamela, did you know? Sixth Brother gave the ring—the one meant for the Desmond family's daughter-in-law—to *that* woman..."
Auntie Pamela was shocked. "Is that true?"
"Absolutely true!"
