The voice echoed louder with each call, cutting through the fog in her mind like shards of light through water.

Seraphyne's lashes fluttered open, the glare of white lights stinging her vision. She found herself lying on a reclined medical pod surrounded by cold chrome walls, tubes humming softly, and a faint antiseptic scent lingering in the air. Her heart pounded. This wasn't her kitchen. This wasn't the quiet forest near the border of Sinalta. This wasn't even Earth.
Panic bloomed in her chest.
She sat up slowly. A glass wall divided the lab, and in its polished surface, her reflection stared back. But it wasn't her, at least not the Seraphyne she remembered. The woman reflected there had black hair pinned into a tight knot, a white coat marked with a silver insignia, and eyes too sharp, too calculating.
That's not me. Is it?
