Chapter 112 - Outpost

1983, July 21.

It was 4 in the morning. The sky is still dark.

One of the outposts in front of the first line, located on the beach, had the duty to delay the enemy and buy time for the troops in the first line to take their position.

Every 300 meters, there will be one outpost, guarded by a platoon of soldiers.

In front of these outposts is the sea, with black water, barbed wire and different types of Soviet high-yields mines. Apart from that, nothing else is different from the other.

Searchlights from the outpost are scanning the sea, in case there is a situation.

Private Gromov had just woken up from sleep and was ready to take over from the sentry who had been on duty all night.

"How is it, Grisha? Another boring night?"

"Absolutely, it is your job now. I am going back to sleep."

With a short greeting, Gromov takes over the position of sentry.

After one hour, the sky is still dark, and this is not normal.

"What happened today? Why didn't the sun rise yet?" Gromov was muttering to himself.

By this time, he is still not cautious about what will happen next.

About half an hour later, Gromov heard some strange noise coming from the sea. This alerts him.

However, with the help of the searchlight, he still does not see anything different. Gromov hesitated and decided to get help from his platoon commander, Ivan.

Just as the moment he turned his back, he heard a roar from the sea.

Gromov looks closely this time, in the dark, when the searchlight scans the area, he sees what is coming. A rotten body without its head, exuding black air, with shield and sword, and walking toward the outpost.

"Alert! Alert!"

He immediately fired the gun into the sky, waking up everyone.

Soon, Ivan, who woke up, fired three flares into the sky. Under the flares, they can see what is coming.

The dense chaos of corpses is coming towards them from the sea.

The chaos attack has begun.

"O-1, what is your situation there?"

The gunshot also alerted the first line of defence, and the voice of the company commander came from the radio.

"Comrade Commander, we have spotted the enemy in huge numbers. I am organising for defence now."

"Roger. Hold on the ground, wait for further orders."

"Roger."

Ivan put down the radio, looked at the rotten corpse coming to the outpost, and it was not a difficult mission to hold on the ground if the enemies were just these corpses. They are walking slowly, a huge number compared to a platoon that has only 30 men.

But with the support of artillery and two BTR in the outpost, he can hold out here no matter how long it is. Even though the outpost duty at the beginning was just delaying the enemies for 10-15 minutes, they were allowed to retreat after that.

Without giving orders, soldiers enter their position just as in the practice they have practised for hundred times.

"God damm it, why must they come at this time? I just got into my sleep for an hour." Grisha yawned and complained while he got into his position.

"You should be happy that you are still able to wake up and complain." Gromov reply.

Grisha did not answer, but aimed at the enemies calmly and fired, while Gromov did the same thing, it was still aware of his nervousness.

"No worry, Gromov, just do what you did in the training, aim and shoot. You will get used to being hit by afternoon."

Gromov nodded his head. He was the few recruits in the platoon; most of his comrades had experienced the war against the land of plain.

Without thinking too much, he took a deep breath, aimed at the target and pulled the trigger. The target immediately exploded, its body was blown into pieces, leaving only its two legs. He fired bullets enhanced by elf magic.

First, second and third, gradually, he became better and better at it. Similarly, things happen along the coast.

As Soviet war doctrine after the WW2, they usually arranged weaker troops in the front for defence, while the elite and ace troops would be used as reserve units. The only reason they are doing this is crucial, using the lives of these troops to consume the enemies, of course, these happen when they are duelling with a human army.

However, this is also the same reason they are using it here. They have a limited understanding of the chaos, everything about it was provided by the elf, which many in the general staff were suspicious of, some of it.

The first wave of chaos attack, which is not that intense, coincidentally became the first battle for these recruits. This somehow gives them a very good practice.

Half an hour later, Grisha has finished another magazine.

"This is so boring, I feel like we are just having some night target shooting."

His thoughts were also the thoughts of many people. Their action became slower and slower, more like they were on vacation. Under the strong firepower, this body has no chance to break through.

But soon, another creature joined the battle.

"Comrade Commander, BETA-II spotted on twelve o'clock!"

Ivan looks at where his men reported, and sees another bigger creature that was carrying a shield, bullets shot at it exploded, but did limited damage to it. But he immediately knows how to due with it.

"HMG, aim at his head, fire!"

The HMG fires, though the shield could still block some of the 12.7 mm bullets, but in the end, it was still able to penetrate after continuing to fire at one point of the shield, blowing the head of BETA-II off.

The KGB has conducted all the research and recorded it in a manual, which was distributed to all levels of troops, along with recommendations on how to deal with it. Every soldier and officer was required to understand and remember all the content in the manual.

Now, it is time for them to verify whether the recommendation is correct. If 12.7mm is ineffective, they still have the 14.5 mm machine gun and 30 mm autocannon on the BTR. Else, the strongest weapon in the outpost that they can use against them will be the ATGM.

If none of them is effective, then they can only retreat, let them talk to the 125 mm cannon from the tank or the 220mm rocket from the TOS-1.

Luckily, the recommendations work.

About another 30 minutes later, a new creature joins the battle.

Waves upon waves of rapidly and fast-moving units are dodging the Soviets' bullets, and trying to sneak into gaps between each outpost and attack them from the flank.

"BETA-III detected!"

To deal with these creatures, the solution was to form a crossfire through multiple machine guns. Every outpost was rectangular if looking from above, every outpost is a square, and at the top left and right of the square, a heavy machine gun was set.

Once again, the chaos creature's attempts failed. But as it is said, this is just the beginning.

8 a.m., the BTR join the battle. Before that, it was not joined in almost every outpost, and the threat brought by the chaos could still be easily handled by infantry and machine guns.

Ivan looks at more and more creatures that are joining, and also the corpses that were just walking at the beginning, have started to walk fast, and even running, worry. He once again requests permission to retreat from the company commander.

"Comrade Commander, requesting permission to retreat. The enemies are getting stronger now. I'm afraid it is just a matter of time before they break through us."

Unfortunately, the reply from the other side is not what he expected.

"Negative. It is not the time yet, battalion and regiment commanders have realised the increased difficulties in your defence, we will provide artillery support when necessary."

"Roger that."

Ivan reply. It is not the time yet, because under these outposts, the beach, and the coast, there was something planted down there. It was millions tons of dynamite.

This dynamite was planted under a few meters from the ground, so even shelling from the artillery and smaller-scale FAB aviation bombs will not cause an explosion on it.

It was a great construction, the general staff order on the planting of dynamite since the first line was built.

Ivan knows that this dynamite was not only used to eliminate as much chaos as it could, but also to create a defensive terrain. After the dynamite was detonated, the whole coast would become a big hole, or perhaps a more accurate word would be canyon.

As the Soviets knew, the chaos was similar to the undead, and from the experience of fighting with the undead, they came up with this idea. Waiting for the chaos to drop into the canyon, and then the Red Army can do what they want to do.

The high management did not hide the truth from junior officers and soldiers; everyone here knows what they are facing. Try to limit the battlefield to the coast and beach as long as possible to reduce the width of the battlefield to maximise the superior fire from artillery.
