Chapter 157 - Chapter 156 Vs Oracion Seis III.

"Karna told me a total of three simple weaknesses to your otherwise unstoppable ability.

One, you can only deflect magical and inorganic objects as well as control them, but it does not work on living beings. So physical attacks work on you easily.

Two, you can either deflect the attacks near you or control the opponent's clothes or armour. You cannot do both at the same time.

And finally, three: your magic, while working long-distance, functions in a more pointed manner. As long as I maintain a magical aura around me at a safe distance, you cannot control anything in that area, as you are unable to pinpoint the object's aura due to my scattered magic."

Erza mouthed off his weaknesses one by one while wearing a stretchable armour that made Midnight's magic ineffective.

Midnight was grinding his teeth in anger, seeing that his weaknesses were being revealed so easily. But he knew that he still had a trump card left.

"Haha! Whatever the hell you're planning by stalling for time, it doesn't matter anymore. If you had known about my full abilities, you should have known it would've been better for you to take me out before midnight appears.

Because at that time, my power peaks to a new height that surpasses the combined power of the entire Oración Seis!" Midnight screamed in laughter as dark shadows began to cover him completely.

Suddenly, the entire sky began to fill with dark clouds that covered the moon entirely. As Erza watched, smoke began to surround both her and the now-obscured Midnight. Everything else disappeared into white smoke and dark clouds in the sky.

The next change was more dramatic as the lanky-looking Midnight suddenly began to swell in different places, as if mutations were taking place in his body. It kept increasing until he looked like a fifteen-foot-tall monster entirely made of black colour with white patterns spread across his body.

Then he screamed in a wild roar that sent out a shockwave into the surroundings.

"Now you will die," the monster growled as he used his arms to capture Erza.

Midnight was using his manipulation magic to bend the rays of light, creating the illusion of a monster in front of Erza. He used it as a way to distract the opponent while he travelled through the illusion to strike them with enough force to knock them down.

It had worked perfectly on every opponent he had faced to this day, but today he was in for a reckoning.

Just as he was about to strike, he was suddenly kicked back by Erza, who had been waiting for him to come near so she could take him by surprise.

"How?" Midnight rasped painfully, as Erza had not held back with the kick.

"One of my eyes is artificial. Illusion magic has no effect on it," Erza said as she continued the fight. She knew she only needed to hold out for a few more minutes until the countdown in her head reached zero.

'Don't worry, my friend. I'll make sure to meet your expectations.'

At that time, inside Nirvana's city, in a research laboratory:

As soon as Karna and Cana had climbed the legs of Nirvana, Cana had separated from him and used the Rabbit Talisman to scout the other regions of the city. Karna had gone straight toward where he had sensed Brain's magic—right at the centre, where the six control cores of Nirvana were connected.

Cana, meanwhile, went toward a building that looked the least worn out among all the others. Since they were looking for information on the spell—basically, the research done on it—it was common sense that it would be housed in a separate building, while the controls of Nirvana would be located elsewhere. The research institute might contain many things that couldn't be kept near the delicate controls and cores of Nirvana.

Plus, since it was a scientific research building, the chances of it being built with materials more resilient to time were also very high. So it didn't take long for Cana to find the building that looked newer than all the others along the way.

She looked at the almost-faded sign at the front, thankfully written in a runic language that is rare but still known today—especially to a student taught by Mavis, who had thought it prudent to prepare them for any such encounters in their adventures.

"Nirvit Research Institute: To strengthen the light and remove the darkness," she read aloud, then punched the worn-out door, which collapsed immediately.

Walking inside the hallways, she was surprised to find that the facilities didn't seem centuries old as they should have. According to Karna, Nirvana had been sealed for 400 years, but unlike the outside of the building she broke into, the inside looked only a few decades old.

Confused at first, she checked the path she was walking on and removed one of the tiles. She found what she was looking for underneath it.

"Auto-cleaning runes—similar to the ones Karna used once when he got too absorbed in his rune experiments. After inventing them, he stopped bathing for weeks, saying he could clean himself with magic. It was funny seeing Porlyusica running after him with a broom for that one," Cana reminisced with a smile for a few moments, then became serious as she began to scan the entire runic structure.

"It's the same alphabet used in runes, but it could be said to be scribbled—lacking the refinement that Karna and Mavis had when they created theirs. But even then, this chaotic arrangement seems more efficient than the systematic ones done by Mavis, even though hers are considered among the best in modern times.

Wait, I can look at this later. Right now, I need to collect everything before Karna destroys it all."

She took a few of the tiles, put them in her bag, and began running forward until she reached a library. Immediately, she took the special glasses that allowed her to read quickly and began reading the book at the counter.

"Shit, Karna was right, damn it," Cana cursed as she found the names of those involved in the creation of Nirvana. She read the name of the head of the team that conducted the experiment:

"Ankseram."
