Chapter 648 - 646. The Terror of ‘Magneto’

James' forehead bulged with veins as he glared fiercely at Pierce.

At that moment, he really wanted to slash Pierce's head off with a single claw strike and end this farce once and for all. But James also knew Pierce wasn't lying.

Parallel universes were real. The invaders were real. After encountering two waves of mutants from other worlds, James understood how grave the situation truly was.

Take those two girls just now as an example. Though it was their first meeting, James could clearly smell gunpowder and engine oil on them — not some ordinary scent, but genuine weapon-grade residue.

James had fought in two world wars in his early years and had spent the rest of his life in conflict and on the run. No one knew the smell of battle better than him.

Judging by their appearance—aside from their ability to reverse aging—they were obviously too young to be wielding firearms. This suggested that their original world was probably going through something terrible.

More likely, they were being hunted by some organization or nation, and had somehow unintentionally escaped to this world.

As for those named Alex and Petra, James hadn't smelled anything odd from them, but inexplicably, just standing in front of those two made him feel uneasy.

It was a feeling beyond words—as if he were submerged deep underwater, his body sticky and weak, suffocated by an indescribable pressure.

His instincts told him to get away from those people as fast as possible, and never meet them again in his life.

Because of this, James knew exactly what kind of trouble this world was facing.

"Logan, if we can't figure out where these people come from, we'll always be on the defensive. No one knows how they invaded our world, or whether this technology emerged naturally or was artificially created."

Pierce raised his hand, grabbed James' wrist, and pried the claws away from his collar.

"If it's natural, that's one thing—we just need to contain the invaders. But have you ever considered what it means if this tech is man-made?"

"You mean these so-called invaders are spies sent from other universes?" James frowned, speaking quietly.

Pierce nodded slightly and sneered.

"The higher-ups are terrified. I have to believe it too. I know you hate and distrust me, but I really need help. It's a direct order—I have no choice."

"Then tell your higher-ups this."

James leaned close to Pierce's ear.

"Go Fuck Yourself!"

Pierce's face instantly froze.

He stared at James in disbelief, seemingly unable to understand how Wolverine could become such an obstinate pain.

For once, he really was sincere.

Though he wanted to capture Logan and Charles on the spot, Pierce knew it wasn't his mission. Right now, he had to find every possible way to deal with the invaders. If not, the military would soon step in next.

Pierce licked his lower teeth with his tongue, then let out an angry, bitter laugh as he nodded slightly.

"Fine, I've already given you a chance. This is your own doing."

With that, Pierce suddenly spun around and made a hand signal toward the mercenaries.

In the next moment, all the mercenaries raised their guns, indiscriminately aiming at everyone on the other side—including Pierce himself was within their firing range.

"We might not get out of here, but I swear, you'll die right in front of me," James growled, grabbing Pierce's shoulder from behind with a threatening grip.

"I know. But don't think you can use me to threaten these people," Pierce said coldly. "I told you, this is a death sentence from above. If I can't find those invaders, I'll have no grave either. So please, just leave Caliban to me, and you take that old man and get out of here fast."

"I'm telling you again—don't even think about it." James pressed his fist against the back of Pierce's head; if he wanted, his claws could pierce through Pierce's skull anytime.

Suddenly, both sides locked into a tense stalemate.

At this moment, no one dared make the first move—not even Pierce gave the order to open fire. He simply felt the pressure on the back of his head and stood calmly.

Caliban was nearly scared to death. From start to finish, he had no idea what was going on. At first, he guessed maybe Wolverine had gotten into trouble with someone he shouldn't have.

But when the enemy came directly for him, Caliban was stunned—and terrified to see they were willing to risk everything to take him away. It tortured him deeply.

Pierce made no move, and James didn't dare act rashly. He knew that at such close range, with so many enemies around, Charles had absolutely no chance to resist.

If they chose Caliban, everyone there might end up trapped. But if they simply handed Caliban over, James couldn't get past that in his heart.

At that moment, the roar of an engine suddenly sounded overhead.

Before anyone could react, a car burst out from the factory skyline, speeding swiftly overhead in a wide arc.

The mercenaries quickly raised their guns, aiming at the flying car in alert. Then, in the next instant, the guns in everyone's hands slipped out, as if pulled by some invisible force, and floated suspended in midair.

"What the—?!"

Pierce frowned at the sudden change, and even James' eyes widened in surprise.

"Eric—is that you? You're back!"

Charles raised his hands excitedly, waving like a child filled with joy at the sight.

He didn't care at all that he was in an extremely dangerous situation right now. His cloudy eyes were filled only with overwhelming joy—the excitement of seeing an old friend.

Looking up at the familiar car, James immediately recognized it as the Chrysler he had rented.

"Quite a lively scene, huh."

A flash of purple light appeared, and an unstable, blurry-edged portal materialized beside James. From the portal came a sharp, commanding voice.

James turned to look and saw Lorna, her striking dark green hair fading in color.

Lorna glanced through the portal, first casting a mocking smile at the mercenaries, then fixing her gaze on James.

"Looks like you could use some help. You saved us, we saved you. That should even things out between us."

James pressed against Pierce, his eyes drifting past Lorna to the purple-haired girl behind her—this portal was probably their doing.

"Logan, so you already met these invaders, huh? But you didn't call me. Honestly, I'm really disappointed," Pierce said with a sly look toward Lorna and Clarice, his tone a bit playful.

"Shut up," James snapped. "Don't you understand what's going on?"

Under Lorna's control, all the mercenaries armed with various guns were now puppets to their own weapons. The floating guns reversed their barrels, steadily aiming at the mercenaries' heads.

Everyone could feel it—any hostile move would cause these weapons to blow their brains out instantly.

"The one who doesn't understand the situation is you," Pierce said coldly. "A native of this world siding with invaders—Logan, are you planning to be a traitor?"

James answered with a sharp strike of his hand, powered by his adamantium skeleton. The blow landed like a steel hammer.

Pierce offered no resistance and was knocked unconscious to the ground.

"You're not going to kill him?" Lorna asked, confused.

James ignored her question. He motioned for Caliban to quickly enter the portal and get inside the car, then strode toward Charles' position and pushed his wheelchair.

One end of the portal was on the ground; the other opened directly into the back seat of the Chrysler. Caliban walked in trembling, head lowered, not daring to look at the two girls, heading straight to the farthest corner of the car.

James, pushing the constantly babbling Charles, first lifted him into the seat, then folded up the wheelchair and stowed it.

After finishing, he looked at Lorna.

"Get out of here, now."

"What about them?" Lorna glanced at the mercenaries frozen in place.

If she wanted, Lorna could have just flicked her fingers and turned those weapons into a hail of bullets, but this was still a strange world to her, and she wasn't ready to start killing recklessly.

James noticed this too. Frowning, he thought it over for a moment, then shook his head.

"Forget about them. Let's move."

"As you wish."

With a flick of her hand, the luxury car shot straight up into the sky.

At the same time, the guns floating in midair began to disassemble themselves. A series of clicking sounds rang out as each weapon broke down into parts that fell onto the ground.

The mercenaries watched the car rise and fade into the distance, barely daring to breathe.

Since the death of the world's greatest terrorist, so many years ago, they had finally once again felt the terror of Magneto.
