Chapter 13 - Discovering the truth

While talking to soldier B, Captain Axel returned to the base entrance, as he had received an order from his superiors that all people entering the base should be tested to determine what kind of superpower they had.

Axel thought it was to prevent normal people from pretending to be people with superpowers, which would be a stupid thing to do, since the physiques of normal people and people with superpowers were different and the lie would be discovered soon and the people would be seriously punished.

Little did he know that he was terribly mistaken.

His superiors were not worried about this, because if normal people died, it would make no difference to them.

They even thought it was better because that way they would save on supplies, and with that extra, they could recruit more people with superpowers.

What Axel did not imagine was that the base was looking for people with a specific superpower.

The information that Captain Axel told soldier B was half true and half false.

Soldier B mixed the information that was released at the base with some rumors that the citizens started spreading but were suppressed by the base.

Even though he was a captain, even he did not know the full truth of what happened that day.

In the beginning, there were even rumors that the base was experimenting with people with superpowers, and, as a result, this rumor was strongly suppressed by his superiors.

Captain Alex sold this information to most of the rookies he met at the base.

The base was sending several teams after the devil, and only the selected people were able to know his true information, and all of them refused to divulge it before leaving for the mission and never returning.

Captain Axel was worried about being selected for this mission because he knew that the mummified bodies were real.

His best friend returned from a supply mission as the only survivor because he had exhausted all his power, had passed out, and had been left in the armored car to rest.

After waking up, realizing he was alone and still weak, he decided to rest and wait for the team to return, as they wouldn't be much help.

After sleeping for a few hours and regaining some strength, he went out in search of the team that hadn't returned, and, not seeing any zombies in sight, he thought the team had taken so long because they were killing them.

However, he couldn't find his team.

All he found were the walkie-talkies they used to communicate next to dried-out and unrecognizable bodies, thus fleeing the place and almost dying on the way, having only managed to survive because he drove at high speed without eating or sleeping until he reached the base.

As soon as he arrived at the base, he passed out and was placed in quarantine, where, after waking up and passing the test, he told Axel what had happened in secret before being taken by his superiors for interrogation.

Without hearing from him for a long time, the last time Axel saw him was before he left on his last mission, which was to capture the devil.

Axel was anxious and needed to grow his superpower quickly, so he tricked the newbies into getting colored crystals to exchange for others that suited him and thus increase his superpower.

What he didn't even imagine was that what he was spreading was very close to the truth.

After a long and tiring journey, Alex took his rewards given by the base, which were points, the base's official currency, which could be exchanged for food and other supplies.

These points could also be exchanged for core crystals, which were much more valuable to people with superpowers and were the most used currency among people with supernatural powers.

After exchanging his points for a reasonable amount of food, enough for a week, Alex tried to buy more nutritious food, remembering that Leo seemed to be getting thinner and thinner every time he returned from a mission.

Alex was suspicious that something was going on, but Leo said that his brother was in poor health and, with the food shortage during the apocalypse, it was normal for him to lose weight.

It was because he was drugged that he had sex with Oliver and he got pregnant.

After having a miscarriage, he became infertile, and Alex had to take responsibility for him, but deep down Alex hated Oliver, even though he didn't let it show so as not to hurt Leo.

Alex had always liked Leo, and due to the fact that he had been drugged, the relationship with Leo ended completely and had no future.

The Ashfords always despised Leo for being a beta, and on the contrary, they always valued Oliver, spoiling him and giving him everything he wanted just because he was an omega, and with that, he could rise socially by marrying a powerful alpha.

After the incident, Alex tried to find the person who drugged him, but because he was looking for a beta, the search was long, and when they finally discovered the true identity of the person, who was actually an alpha, he had already fled the country, making it impossible to find out who was behind the plan.

At that time, Oliver was already pregnant, and her engagement to him was already written in stone.

Because of this, Alex was cold to Oliver and refused to stay with him, providing him with his pheromones, which the doctor said caused the baby to miscarry.

After this, Leo fought with him, blaming him for what happened to his brother, and Alex, in order not to hurt him even more, began to pretend to care about Oliver, also driven by the guilt of having lost his own son.

After all, he had no proof that Oliver had drugged him, and that night, Oliver had also been drugged.

To tell the truth, he didn't remember anything after submerging himself in the cold bathtub after the medicine stopped working, and because of that, he ended up spending a month in the hospital with pneumonia.

Even after all that, he still cared about Leo, even though the Ashfords treated him badly for trying to seduce Alex and steal him from his brother, something Leo had never done.

Ever since Oliver got pregnant, Leo distanced himself from him, but Alex couldn't help but still worry about him.

This resulted in the Ashfords' fury, who started treating him worse, causing Alex to have to distance himself from him.

After the apocalypse, the Ashfords wanted to abandon Leo and let him die.

It was Alex who insisted on saving him, risking himself to get medicine that became very precious in the apocalypse, discovering later that Leo hadn't taken it because the family had secretly exchanged it for more food that they didn't even share with Leo.

Alex had to threaten to abandon them and take Leo away so that they would change their expressions and promise to take better care of Leo.

However, the medicine had already been changed, and the food had already been eaten.

It was Alex who personally took care of Leo after he returned, feeding him and giving him water, which had become scarce, until his fever miraculously subsided.

After Leo got better, it was the two of them who took responsibility for protecting and getting supplies for the family.

Luckily, Alex had awakened a superpower early in the apocalypse, and Leo, even though he didn't have superpowers, was good at martial arts and taught Alex.
