I didn't leave Yerton without saying goodbye to Taylor.
After everything he had done for me—helping me find my footing again, helping me land the job I thought would be my fresh start—I owed him honesty. More than that, I owed him my gratitude.
So I invited him to dinner.
And Ethan came with me.
I had been nervous—terrified, really—that things would feel awkward. That old wounds and silent jealousies might hang between them like smoke. But the moment they shook hands, something unexpected happened.
They clicked.
Their conversation flowed effortlessly, and I watched from across the table as laughter echoed between them like old friends reunited. Ethan respected Taylor for being the kind of man who had looked after me when he couldn't. And Taylor, in turn, looked at Ethan with quiet approval—as if silently saying, Don't break her again.
It was the kind of dinner that felt strangely… right.
But it also made my chest ache.
