For a massive tower like this, ten people acting together would cover too little area. Zhang Ge decided to take a small risk and let the remaining team members pair up to do the sweep.
As the Guardsmen scattered into various rooms, the short bursts of Hellgun fire echoed from all directions. After opening yet another door, Zhang Ge finally encountered the enemy for the first time.
It was a muscular figure, draped in tattered rags—was it even human?
Looking at the grotesquely deformed limbs of this creature, Zhang Ge felt he needed to find a more appropriate term.
The cultist clutched a Heavy Lumberjack Gun and, after seeing Zhang Ge kick the door open, immediately tried to pull the trigger. However, Dominica, who was behind him and already on high alert, was faster—two explosive rounds tore through its chest and skull in quick succession.
Its final convulsive movements sent a few stray rounds from the Heavy Lumberjack Gun, but they only sparked uselessly against the walls.
This must be one of the elite cultists from a Chaos warship. Compared to the ragtag groups on the planet, these professional cultists not only likely bore minor blessings but also had military experience. In large enough numbers, they could even stand against the Astra Militarum.
However, up until the entire Outer District was cleared, Zhang Ge had not encountered a second enemy. The rest of the squad quickly regrouped in the entrance hall.
It seemed the enemy numbers were fewer than expected, or perhaps the Outer District was only patrolled by scouts?
Leaving the district, Zhang Ge, along with the Squad Leader, Isis, and the various squad leaders, emerged one after another. It seemed that the takeover of the Outer District had not faced much trouble.
Subsequently, after planning out the various firing positions near the Bell Tower, they assigned half of their personnel to directly assault the tower.
Zhang Ge boarded the Chimera, and soon after, the sounds of gunfire erupted from the other side, prompting the convoy to accelerate rapidly.
One by one, the Chimeras rounded a corner and began to head straight for the Bell Tower. Meanwhile, the Guardsmen stationed in the Outer District were using their Hellguns to suppress any enemies trying to peek out.
Crimson beams shot from windows, the Hellgun rays hot enough to melt ceramite armor and shred simple cover. The enemy's temporary heavy bolter positions were prioritized, leaving the remaining cultists with lasguns and Heavy Lumberjack Guns to organize only sporadic counterattacks.
As the heavy fire from the vehicle-mounted weapons joined the battle, the situation quickly tilted in their favor. Supported by fire control systems, heavy explosive rounds and rapid-fire laser cannons easily melted the makeshift barricades, precision picking off cultists behind them—sometimes even taking down surrounding buildings of ceramite.
Dominica, manning the heavy bolter on the roof, felt the power of technology. Through her sights, she could see enemies highlighted by thermal imaging and auspex, even spotting a targeting line extending out for assistance.
All she had to do was align the line and pull the trigger, and the explosive rounds would turn those highlighted targets into pieces—regardless of whether they were hiding behind walls. The only difference was that it would take a bit more time for the first few rounds to breach the wall.
Of course, because the tower was so massive, despite their best efforts to suppress the enemy, they could not completely avoid counterattacks against their vehicles.
From a shadowed window at the waist of the tower, a missile launcher's barrel emerged. Its warped spirit bit into the hands of any wielder until the trigger was pulled, sending out a pink flame as the missile launched crazily toward the Chimeras driving toward the tower below.
A deafening explosion erupted as the fiery blast ignited from the roof of one Chimera.
The weak top armor couldn't withstand the missile impact for even half a second, as the surge of force shredded the crew inside, scattering blood and limbs throughout the vehicle.
But the scene didn't last long; it was as if the high-temperature jets had sentience, actively seeking out the vehicle's ammunition racks. At the moment of contact, an internal explosion occurred, blowing the turret skyward.
A complete Chimera and its occupants turned to char in an instant, and the following vehicles had no choice but to circle around it, firing additional rounds to ensure no one remained trapped in the flames, suffering unnecessarily.
As they drove closer to within a hundred meters of the tower, the convoy spread out, and vehicles started to release smoke grenades. Amid the spreading fog, the infantry quickly dismounted from the moving vehicles.
As the Guardsmen moved up the final hundred meters, using the armored vehicles for cover, numerous grenades were lobbed into windows and behind doors. The muffled sounds of offensive grenades echoed out, their powerful shockwaves felt even outside.
At the forefront, Isis charged in, moving ahead of the assault teams preparing to enter, and shortly after, the Guardsmen moved in formation, breaching the Bell Tower.
Zhang Ge had a slightly different approach; after a quick glance, he found a peculiar issue: this lighter armored vehicle was small enough to fit through the main entrance, unlike the Chimeras.
What followed was predictable. Behind the heavily guarded main door were a large number of cultists, armed with various firearms, ready to unleash concentrated fire at the slightest noise outside.
However, as the "noise" approached with an unexpected speed, the cultists, who had just raised their weapons, heard the sharp sound of something shattering, immediately followed by a lighter armored vehicle barreling straight through the thick wooden door without losing speed.
As wooden splinters flew, the two headlights projected a blinding brightness, illuminating the entire space ahead and leaving anyone who dared to look directly with unavoidable blindness.
In this narrow space for the vehicle, the lighter armored car maneuvered skillfully, crushing those cultists who couldn't get out of the way into bloody remnants under its wheels.
As if straight from hell, the heavy bolter fire echoed, the intense engine roar mixing with the deep gunfire, violently tearing apart the cultists' carefully set defenses at the main entrance.
