Chapter 14 - Chapter 1 Staring

Eta finds herself roaming about the universe in lazy circles. She goes through galaxy after galaxy, past black holes, through supernova remnants. Yet her face is completely flat.

"Is this really all I'm meant to do? The universe is the same as it has been. I've already learned much about it from Alpha and Omega." She calls out to no one. Her melody surprisingly one note.

Eta decides to do the one thing she still finds enjoyment in, observing life. In a far off galaxy, a very old one by her standards, she finds a planet of life.

Similar to her home, a planet of blues, greens, and browns. This world was ruled by creatures that could take to the skies. They made cities that stood atop mountains, touching the clouds with every step. They are not extremely advanced like some civilizations would become. Existing at the point where they are just creating widespread electricity.

She set down within the largest city on the planet, changing herself into one of them to explore. Her form on the taller side of the mortals, wearing a veil to hide her eyes. Eta walked among them, talking with them in her usual melodic tones. Many would come to see her, a strange oddity within their city. Something strangely captivating with just words.

They follow her as she walks around, taking it that a star from the countryside is experiencing their city for the first time. Everything she does, they flock to her. Every word, every action, every smile, and every step.

"What is purpose?" Eta speaks to no one in particular, her melody slightly melancholic.

Those around freeze for a moment to contemplate such a question. These people had lived life without much forethought in their true purpose.

An older man steps up. "To have purpose is to have wonder. Learning how to enjoy our limited time and creating as little monotony as possible."

"The purpose of life yes, but what of the world itself? Is it just meant to exist or is there more than just existence?" Eta walks up to the older man. Her towering form covering him with a light shadow.

Another of the crowd steps up, one that appears to be a woman of science. "The world exists to show the unbridled improbability that all of existence is possible. By all means, all life, all planets, and all stars are so unlikely to form that to exist is to be a miracle. Each exists to influence the next in line."

"Hmm, to have purpose is to exist, to exist it to defy fate." Eta's melody grows lighter. "Thank you."

Eta walks off, the people around instinctually stop in their tracks. She reaches the edge of the city overlooking a large set of plains that extend to the horizon.

"To have purpose is to find new things, to exist is to defy fate. Those without infinite time have such wonder in their hearts. I may be a living creature myself, but my timescale will outlive even their atoms." She mulls to herself. The song something entirely new, more inquisitive and less joyous.

She sets off once more to roam about the universe until finding herself at the edge of reality. The film that contains all that she knows, the barrier of the expansive black. The last bastion against the void.

A hand rests on it from the other side, one of claws and scales. Just a shade brighter than the nothingness behind it. It seems to be pushing on the film, slowly stretching it before it snaps back.

"Truly what is the void. Omega never fully explained it. Only that it would potentially destroy everything. But would it?" She places her hand opposite the creatures. "What knowledge could the void contain? What countless eons has it observed quietly in the background? Could anything lie beyond the nothingness?"

The creature pushes once more, the force strong against Eta's hand. The power rivaling that of a star's collapse. Glancing at the creature, it is dragon like. It has wings of scale, horns, and a tail. Whatever or whoever it may have been has long since been removed. The soul hollow and the mind warped to mindlessness.

Eta moves away from the barrier to gaze upon other sections. Each has a different kind of creature from that of the deep sea, to humanoid, to something that was never quite living. All void of soul and all mindless. She could see where their soul once was, yes, but it was gouged of all parts. The complexity of the soul striped down to that of one note.

The not so young goddess continues observing all the creature that reside at the edge of the universe. Then she sees the glimpse of a soul in the blackness. Faint, but a soul of complexity resides in a section of the film all its own.

The creature is that of a human man, his color not so grey-scaled. Hair of brown, skin like that of ash, eyes of red. He gazed at the barrier with some modicum of thought. Rather than endlessly prodding it, he poked it in various places. Checking where there was more give than other. Testing, hypothesizing, testing, hypothesizing. He is curious.

"How different. This one seems to actually be 'alive.' How? With how every other creature is completely lost in mind and soul, I thought all creatures within the abyss would be the same. How curious."

Eta goes up to where the man touches to see if he's surprised if the give that was just there changes. And that he is. His eyes widen slightly as he takes a step back.

"He is truly thinking. A different existence to all the others."

Eta pulls out the scroll of laws and writes a new law. The barrier of the void may allow sound and sight to cross through it at the point where Eta is.

"Hello sir." Eta smiles at the man through the barrier.

He blinks and smiles back
