Chapter 38 - What is a werewolf

Marcel frowned. The experiment failed again. Professor Adder came and looked over his shoulder and saw the reaction before him. Her bright fiery red eyebrows rose into her pale yellow blond hair.

"Where did you come up with such a concoction?"

Marcel did not look up. "Hazel. We are working on a solution for werewolfism."

Professor Adder's eyebrows rose again. Werewolfism and Hazel was helping? "And you are using ingredients affecting the soul?"

He nodded absent-mindedly. "The soul, werewolf suppressors, and those that initiate or halt physical change."

Professor Adder sat next to him with a frown. She looked at the ingredients laid out on his workbench. "Halt physical change?"

He finally looked up and at her. "That was my question too! And then Hazel began explaining the reaction that occurs when you combine or allow Howl tree ashes to mix, and then stabilize, with blue star nectar." He was smiling broadly when he finished and Professor Adder's eyes were wide and she was nodding.

"They both initiate change but they are from opposing dimensions so at the right levels and combined with the right ingredients they would…"

Professor Adder's mouth was agape as she allowed the process to flow through her potion master mind. She was brought back to the present when she heard Marcel suck his teeth.

"What happened?"

"Hazel feels for it to be affective at this step it should be a pale blue. There is a lot of green in this."

Professor Adder looked to the powder floating before them in a processing bubble.

Processing bubbles were used when the potion was primarily powder or gaseous, didn't need heat, or needed a higher level of containment.

"what has been combined at this point?" this was advanced potions class and there were only ten students. The others were all becoming curious about what was exciting their professor so much and they began drifting over one by one.

"I ejected soul essence into a mix of blue moon dust and wolf's bane to initiate the process. I allowed it to combine and then settle and once it settled completely it should turn pale blue."

"Your soul essence initiates the process and catalyzes it." Professor Adder nodded.

The class had become a hands on potion development lab.

On the Dreamscape Marcel talked to Hazel about his progress. She nodded absent-mindedly as Evervine and Hermione sat fully engrossed in his narrative.

"I actually got past that part but I think the distilled liquid and gas that forms should be a very pale green and I can only get it to a vibrant grass green."

Marcel's eyes widened. "You got that far?! What am I doing wrong?"

"How are you injecting your soul essence?"

He frowned. "Like normal."

"And what is normal?"

"through an incantation I learned."

All three girls raised their eyebrows. Evervine narrowed her eyes.

"You don't know how to inject soul essence? That's why your wand only half listens to you."

"I injected my soul essence into my wand." Marcel spoke as if he were offended.

"But with an incantation."

He shrugged at the three. "That's the only way."

All six of them sat down and worked on soul essence manipulation. When they were done Marcel sat stunned. Evervine just shook her head at him and began speaking to Hazel.

"I still don't understand why you feel this will work."

"Well, I don't want to tell you what I saw about Professor Lupin without his permission but Marcel was right he is a werewolf through a curse."

"But aren't they all cursed." Hermione scrunched her nose in confusion.

"Technically yes but I never really understood why we believed that a magical 'curse' can be passed through a bite. That is an infection. Yes the infection is a product of the curse but it is far from the same thing."

Both Evervine and Hermione stopped. That made sense but they had just accepted a traditional explanation without question and now their world cracked a bit.

Evervine broke from the trans first. "Explain werewolfism to me then. I am suddenly thoroughly confused."

"Okay. Let's see. Werewolves were originally cursed vampires. Many believed that they were born at the same time but this was not true. What happened was Vampires were explores. As soon as they discovered dimensions they tried to travel to each and every one and even sought out new ones.

"What they didn't understand at the time is that dimensions sometimes have their own unique rules of physics. So they ventured, and stayed too long, in dimensions that fundamentally changed them. Now the curse came in the fact that, somehow, once they underwent this change it actually extended back into the individual's blood line down their father's side.

"Many think that this is because of vampires blood memory. Somehow the physics of these dimensions that cause werewolfism can travel in multiple directions of fate.

"The vampires then became rather uneducated and saw these infected as unclean and believed if they killed the one originally infected they would cleanse the bloodline.

"Then it became oh these are our relatives we can't do this and they began locking them up and using them as beasts. After eons of this they regained some of their intelligence and memory and they broke free of their subjugation to have a deep hatred for vampires and all creatures that resemble them.

"But the vampires have long memory and even if you are only one eighth vampire you will have this memory."

She stopped there because it was getting dangerously close to Professor Lupin's truth.

"So you're saying that werewolves aren't violent vicious beasts?" They all turned to Ron and blinked simultaneously.

Hazel cleared her throat. "Well, werewolves here in En Dimension are definitely disconnected from their intellect. They seem to operate from a place of pure instinct when they are in their wolf form."

"Really?" Evervine and Marcel spoke as one. Hermione frowned.

"All werewolves are not like that?"

"No." Evervine stood a bit taller and straighter. "I have a cousin who is a werewolf." She paused and nodded in thought. "We have vampire blood from out great grandmother's side so I can understand. Erm… He retains all his intellect when he changes forms. I do not think he likes being a werewolf though, there is a bit of a stigma, I will ask him if he would like to try your potion."

Marcel was immediately excited while Hazel became thoughtful. She shrugged and said nothing. Seeing this Marcel happily accepted.

"We will keep working on the potion but we need to speak to Professor Lupin. He may not even want to take the potion. Harry do you think you can help me with that."

Harry's eyes went wide. "Me?! I didn't understand half of what you said."

Hazel paused in confusion for a brief moment and then she seemed to have an ah-ha moment.

"No. I meant to help me get him to the dreamscape. I will talk to him."

"Oh. Sure I can do that. But are you sure you are still speaking to me."

She looked at him blankly for a moment and then turned and walked away. Evervine and Hermione sucked their teeth in unison.
