Chapter 29 - Familiar Stranger

"You were the best caregiver… and the best friend." Damien said. He could tell she didn't remember him—just as he expected. Clearly, Dr. Lucian had wiped her memory after their last encounter.

"What?" Her voice was barely above a whisper.

"You remind me of someone I knew." he said, jaw clenched as he stared into the twisted landscape he'd revealed. When he spoke again, his voice was carefully controlled. "Memory can be a treacherous thing. Sometimes it's kinder to forget."

The fountain, now twisted and ugly, bubbled with thick, dark water that didn't reflect any light. Strangely, Selene felt comforted by how honest it looked. There was something familiar about it. And about him. Like he was an old friend she'd somehow forgotten.

"You know about magic, don't you?" she asked, breaking the silence.

He gave no response, but his shoulders tensed slightly.
