Chapter 94 - CHAPTER 95

095: Summer Camp Fishing Battle!!

"Hmm..." Picking an Earl Dervish Pokémon is a major turning point in any Trainer's journey. Ash didn't expect Serena to ask for his opinion so directly.

Recalling the events of the Pokémon Adventures manga and Serena's future choices from the original series, Ash remembered that Serena eventually selected Fennekin, the Fire-type Starter of the Kalos Region—but each Fennekin had its own distinct temperament and training challenges.

Ash took a moment to think carefully before responding: "I think the Kalos Region's Fire-type Starter, Fennekin, really suits your personality, Serena—elegant, calm, but also quietly strong. But choosing a Pokémon depends on your connection with it."

"So when the time comes, Serena, follow your heart. Pick the one that resonates with you most."

"After all, the Starter Pokémon (Yusanjia) are selected and raised by the Pokémon League specifically for new Trainers. With proper care and serious training, they'll become your most trusted and loyal partners."

As Ash finished, Gary and the others nodded in agreement. Even if their choices differed, everyone acknowledged the truth in his words.

Serena, on the other hand, was deeply touched that Ash had suggested a Pokémon specifically for her.

"So... the Kalos Fire-type Starter—Fennekin? I'll remember that. When the time comes, I'll choose Fennekin to be my Earl Dervish Pokémon," Serena thought silently, her eyes focused.

Though they hadn't known each other long, Serena felt an inexplicable sense of trust and connection toward Ash. There was no logic behind it—only instinct.

While they continued eating breakfast, the conversation gradually shifted from Yusanjia Starters to the day's upcoming summer camp events.

Not just Ash's group, but all the students in the cafeteria buzzed with excitement and speculation.

After yesterday's Opening Challenge, many students hadn't achieved high scores, so they hoped today's activity would give them a chance to catch up or even surpass Ash in total points.

After breakfast, Professor Oak summoned all the students to assemble at the training dam at the edge of camp.

"Good morning, everyone!!"

"Good morning, Professor Oak!" the students responded cheerfully in unison.

"Did everyone get a good night's sleep?" Oak asked, scanning the crowd of eager summer campers.

"Yes!" the students chorused.

"Excellent! It's another perfect sunny day—great for camp activities!" Oak raised his hand toward the clear sky before looking back at the children.

"So—any guesses what we're doing today?"

"Yes!" the crowd responded again, their curiosity piqued.

"Haha..." Professor Oak chuckled at the synchronized enthusiasm.

"Today, we're heading to the creek behind the forest to go fishing for Water-type Pokémon!"

Excited murmurs erupted among the students.

"In addition to catching Pokémon, today's activity will be scored based on the size and weight of the Pokémon you fish up. This is a contest of both skill and luck!"

"Everyone, do your best!" Professor Oak added with a proud smile.

"Yes—!!"

"Now, line up here to collect your Fishing Rods. Once everyone has one, we'll head to the creek."

"Yes—!!" the students cheered again.

The line quickly formed as the students eagerly collected their gear from a box opened in front of Professor Oak.

"So today's activity is Pokémon fishing, and they're scoring based on size and weight?" Ash muttered as he waited in line.

Fishing was a familiar pastime. In his previous life and in his memories as the current Ash, he had gone fishing often near Pallet Town with Gary and others. While he wasn't a pro, he understood the basics well enough.

So unlike others, Ash felt calm.

"Hey, Ash." Gary nudged him while collecting his Fishing Rod. "Wanna make this interesting? Let's see who can catch the biggest Water-type!"

Ash glanced at Gary sideways, expression flat.

"Just don't shove me into the river again like last time."

"Hey, that was an accident," Gary replied with a grin. "And you said you forgave me! You promised not to bring it up anymore!"

"Fine, fine, I won't tease you again," Ash sighed, cracking a small smile. "But Gary—today's not about you and me. Everyone's competing together."

"You're my friend, Gary. You can lose to me, but don't lose to anyone else."

"Hmph! I should be the one saying that!" Gary huffed. "Ash, as my biggest rival and the only one I acknowledge as an equal—don't let anyone else beat you today!"

"If you lose, it better be to me!"

Their friendly bickering continued as the rest of the students lined up, chatting and laughing, Fishing Rods in hand. Then Professor Oak clapped his hands, drawing everyone's attention.

Clap clap!

"Alright, now that everyone has their gear and seems more than ready, let's get going!"

"On the way to the creek, we'll pass through part of the forest. Keep your eyes open—you might spot wild Pokémon!"

"Okay~!"

The excited students, rods in hand, replied in chorus and began following Professor Oak out of camp.

"Whoa..."

"Look over there, it's a Pokémon!"

"Wow! What species is that? I've never seen it before—not even in Kalos!"

While Ash had ventured into the forest the day before and already encountered wild Pokémon up close, most of the other students were entering it for the first time—and their reactions were full of wonder.

Every time a new Pokémon appeared, students stopped to whisper or shout in excitement.

"Look! It's a wild Caterpie!"

"Wild Pokémon can be caught by battling them first, then throwing a Poké Ball!"

"When you turn ten, you'll officially become a Trainer and receive your first Pokémon to begin your journey. You'll be able to travel with your Pokémon and catch more companions along the way," Oak explained.

"But until then, it's important to learn as much as you can about Pokémon and how to live and battle alongside them."

"Yes, Professor Oak!" the group of students replied in unison.

"Professor Oak! I already know a lot about Pokémon!" said Goh, confidently raising his hand as he walked alongside his roommates—Fat Fu, Xiaohu, and Nobi.
