Chapter 45 - A MAN HAUNTED BY HIS PATTERNS

Daniel's Reflection:

It wasn't just the silence that echoed after Nuella walked away; it was the weight of recognition.

Daniel sat on the edge of his bed that night, staring at the flickering light of his phone screen, knowing she wouldn't reply.

He had tried the gifts, the apology letter, and the midnight messages. None of them pierced the wall she had every right to build.

But what haunted him more than her silence was the bitter familiarity of it.

This wasn't the first time he'd watched someone drift away while he stood paralyzed by ego, craving admiration more than intimacy.

Validation, applause, approval, and surface-level praise had always been his drug.

In high school, it had been the coaches. In his first year of college, the frat scene.

More recently, it was his classmates, followers, and women who saw him as charming and impressive.

He had always been drawn to the glow of being wanted, even if it meant dimming the light of the one person who truly saw him.

Nuella had seen him. Through his chaos, his ambition, his flaws.

And still, he'd chosen everything else over her.

Why?

Because it felt easier. Because real love required him to be still. Vulnerable. Accountable. And he hadn't known how.

When he sent those packages, the fresh blooms she once loved, the envelope with their old photo tucked inside, the printed letter with drawings of memories, he told himself he was trying.

But Nuella had thrown them away. And he couldn't blame her.

He realized then that this wasn't just about her.

It was about him, the boy inside him who had learned to survive by collecting attention like trophies, never learning how to hold on to something real.

He remembered his mother's voice once, sharp but tired:

"You always need to be seen, Daniel. But when will you let someone know you?"

Back then, he had rolled his eyes.

Now, it stung.

Because Nuella had tried to know him. She had waited. Listened. Believed.

And he'd betrayed her for a fleeting high, a laugh from another girl, a moment of spotlight, a dopamine hit that vanished the second Nuella walked out the door.

Now, the silence was different. It wasn't just the absence of her voice; it was the mirror he was finally forced to look into.

He didn't just miss her.

He missed who he could've been with her.

Here's a lively, heartfelt, and humorous scene where Daniel enlists his closest friends to talk to Nuella on his behalf.

 The Lover Boy Summit

School Cafeteria – Back Corner Table, 5:45 p.m.

Daniel sat with his head in his hands, sighing like someone who had just failed a major exam or, in his case, at love.

Across the table sat his three best friends: Caleb, Jordan, and Timi, armed with fries, sarcasm, and not a shred of pity.

"So let me get this straight," Jordan began, slowly dipping a nugget in ketchup.

"You, Daniel the Don, want us to go beg Nuella for you?"

Caleb choked on his drink. "Wait. Us? The same guys you ditched last semester for 'study dates'?"

Timi leaned forward, eyes wide. "Is this a prank? Are we on camera?"

"Guys," Daniel groaned, "I'm serious."

"You're seriously whipped," Caleb said.

"Hopelessly," added Timi.

Jordan held up a hand. "Wait, wait. Before we risk our dignity, we need answers. Real ones.

Do you love her? Or is this just some Romeo rebound energy because she left you looking like a sad, wet puppy?"

Daniel paused, eyes narrowing. "I love her."

"Define love," Jordan challenged.

Daniel sighed, but then sat up straighter. "It's not just the butterflies or the late-night calls.

It's how she made me want to be better.

How she saw through the version of me I show everyone and still stayed… until I messed up."

The boys went quiet for a second.

"Damn," Caleb muttered. "That was low-key poetic."

Jordan looked skeptical. "And you didn't say anything about Mira when y'all started?"

"I was stupid," Daniel admitted. "I should've told her. I should've never made that bet. I thought… I could handle it."

"Ohhhh, so it was the bet?" Timi said, smacking his forehead. "You clown."

"Bro, I didn't pursue her for the bet!" Daniel defended.

"I just wanted to prove I could get her attention because… well… you all kept saying I couldn't."

We did say that, but we didn't know you took it seriously, Timi said.

"You risked a good girl to win a dare?" Jordan said flatly,

Daniel groaned. "I know. I'm trash. Rotten, recyclable trash."

"Correct," Caleb nodded. "But you're our trash."

They burst into laughter.

Timi leaned back, arms crossed. "Okay, you said, we should help. What do you want us to tell her?

'Hey, Nuella, Daniel is sorry he acted like a walking red flag.'?"

Daniel looked up, hopeful. "More like, 'Daniel is a changed man who deserves a second shot at love and is maybe only 40% red flag now.'"

"Mm, maybe 60%," Jordan smirked.

"You're on thin ice," Daniel warned, trying not to smile.

"Okay, okay," Caleb said, grinning. "Let's say we do this. We go to Nuella.

We tell her you're sorry, you're growing, and you miss her.

What if she says, 'Tell Daniel to jump off a hill'?"

"Then I'll roll down with dignity," Daniel said, placing a hand over his chest dramatically.

"But at least she'll know I meant it."

Jordan snorted. "Look at him. Mr. Lover Boy. Should we get you a guitar and a sad boy hoodie?"

"I'd wear it," Daniel shrugged.

Timi laughed so hard he nearly spilled his drink. "I can't believe this.

Big, bad Daniel is in love. Real love. And begging for our help."

"Boys," Daniel said with a pleading grin, "she's not just any girl. She's the girl."

They all groaned in sync.

Caleb nodded slowly, smirking. "Alright, Romeo. We'll talk to her. But you owe us. Big time."

"Like lifetime pizza debt," Jordan added.

"Free rides," Timi chimed in.

"And if she agrees to talk to you," Caleb said, pointing, "you better show up like a man.

None of that 'brooding in silence' crap. Own your feelings."

"Own my feelings," Daniel repeated, nodding. "Got it. Cry if needed?"

Jordan raised a brow. "Let's not scare her."

Daniel chuckled. "Thank you, guys. Seriously."

"You're lucky we're suckers for romantic drama," Caleb said.

"Now let's go. Lover Boy's got a reputation to repair."

They stood up, backpacks slung over their shoulders, already plotting how best to corner Nuella without seeming too obvious.

As they walked out of the cafeteria, Jordan nudged Daniel. "Next time, just send flowers like a normal person."

Daniel sighed. "I did. She threw them away."

"Yeah," Caleb muttered, "sounds about right."

Cafeteria Exit — The Mira Complication

They were halfway across the quad when Caleb suddenly slowed his pace and turned toward Daniel with a mischievous glint in his eye.

"Wait, wait… bro. One more thing," Caleb said. "What about Mira?"

Daniel blinked. "What about her?"

"You know what I mean," Caleb smirked. "Is there still… something between you two?"

Jordan raised an eyebrow. "Ahhh… the plot thickens."

Timi jumped in, laughing. "Bro, are you about to be stuck between two girls again?"

Daniel groaned. "Guys…"

The three of them broke into dramatic laughter like backup dancers in a bad rom-com.

"Daniel the triangle master," Timi teased.

"Naah, let's be serious here," Caleb said, clapping once.

"So what's the deal, for real?"

Daniel ran a hand through his hair, his expression turning serious.

"Honestly… I'm calling everything off with Mira."

The boys stopped walking.

"That serious?" Jordan asked.

"Yeah," Daniel said, voice steady now. "These last few moments with Nuella, even when she's mad at me, it's just… different.

There's something special about her.

Something real. Mira isn't accepting the breakup yet, but I've made my decision."

He exhaled deeply.

"I want Nuella back. I want her to know that I'm handling Mira, and that she doesn't need to worry.

I want to build something real. No more games."

Timi whistled. "Eii. Lover boy is deep today."

"I'm serious," Daniel added, frowning at their grins.

Jordan elbowed Caleb. "Did he just say he's calling off everything with Mira?"

"Everything," Daniel confirmed.

"You do know she might slash your tires, right?" Caleb muttered under his breath.

"Or your clothes," Timi added, raising his brows.

Daniel laughed, but the edge of worry was real. "Let her. I'll buy new ones."

There was a brief silence, then Jordan nodded slowly. "Well, Nuella's a nice girl. A very nice girl."

Caleb clapped Daniel's shoulder.

"We like her. She's smart, she's humble, and she's always smiling at everyone like their life matters."

"Unlike Mira, who looks like she'd body-slam a puppy," Timi muttered, and they all snorted.

"We'll support you," Jordan said seriously. "If this is what you want, we're with you."

"100%," Caleb added.

"Even if Mira comes swinging," Timi smirked.

Daniel smiled. "Thanks, guys. Really."

"And bro," Caleb added as they resumed walking, "don't mess this up again.

If you break her heart again, we might "just team up with Saraph and fight you."

"No lies," Timi nodded. "Saraph scares me."

Daniel chuckled. "Noted."

They laughed again, but beneath it all was something stronger, a quiet loyalty.

Daniel felt it settle in his chest like warmth.

For the first time in a long while, he wasn't just chasing love.

He was choosing it. Clearly. Boldly.

And he wasn't alone anymore.
