Chapter 18 - Where Are You, My Love?

The morning sun filtered through the white curtains, casting a soft glow across the master bedroom. Wu Mei stirred beneath the covers, still cocooned in the warmth of the night. The silence was comforting, wrapping her in a false sense of peace.

She thought it would be a normal day.

But it wouldn't be.

Qin Yanzhou was already awake. He sat on the edge of the bed, watching her sleep for a long moment before leaning in and pressing a gentle kiss to her forehead.

"Sleep a little longer, my love," he whispered.

Then he rose and stepped quietly into the en-suite bathroom.

The sound of running water filled the air as he undressed and stepped into the shower. The steam wrapped around him, but his mind was already occupied with meetings and security reports.

Fifteen minutes later, Wu Mei blinked her eyes open, stretching softly. Her hand instinctively reached for the warm spot beside her—but it was empty.

"Yanzhou?" she called out sleepily.

She slipped out of bed and padded toward the bathroom just as the door opened.

Qin Yanzhou emerged in a cloud of steam, his black hair damp, water droplets still clinging to his toned chest. A white towel hung low around his waist.

Wu Mei froze in place, her cheeks instantly flushing.

His eyes met hers, and a slow, teasing smile curled on his lips.

"Good morning, wife," he said, voice low and husky.

She opened her mouth to say something, but then—

The towel slipped.

Qin Yanzhou didn't move, didn't flinch. Wu Mei let out a tiny gasp and immediately spun around, covering her eyes with both hands.

"You're doing that on purpose!" she scolded, flustered.

He laughed, clearly amused. "Can you blame me? You're adorable when you're shy."

"Put some clothes on, you villain!"

"As you wish, madam," he said smoothly.

Only after she heard the rustling of clothes did she dare to peek over her shoulder. Qin Yanzhou had slipped into a tailored black shirt, only the top buttons undone, revealing a teasing glimpse of his collarbone.

She blushed again and turned away.

"I'll take a shower too," she muttered.

"Need help?" he offered, cocking a brow.

"No, thank you!"

Once Wu Mei had finished her shower and changed into a soft blue dress, they met downstairs for breakfast. A maid had already prepared a healthy spread: porridge, eggs, toast, and fresh fruit.

Qin Yanzhou reached out, placing a boiled egg into her bowl. "Eat more. You need strength."

She smiled faintly. "Yes, yes. Husband knows best."

"You bet I do."

After breakfast, Qin Yanzhou checked his phone. "I have a meeting at the headquarters this morning. It might run long."

Wu Mei tilted her head. "Do you want me to stay here today?"

He looked up at her. "You can do whatever makes you happy. But take the driver or my assistant with you. Understand?"

"Yes, yes, President Qin. I promise."

He narrowed his eyes, then leaned over and kissed her on the lips. "Don't give me a reason to worry."

She nodded.

Shortly after, Qin Yanzhou left for his office.

Wu Mei changed into a cream coat and sunglasses, then informed the assistant that she wanted to explore the city a little. The assistant nodded dutifully and opened the car door for her.

The car cruised smoothly through the streets of Tianyu.

Wu Mei looked out the window, enjoying the normalcy of the day. Her thoughts drifted to what kind of gift she might buy for Yanzhou later.

But then—

A sharp screech of tires.

A blinding white flash.

A car.

Speeding.

It rammed into their vehicle at full force.

Everything turned upside down.

The assistant shouted something, but Wu Mei couldn't hear.

Metal twisted. Glass shattered. And then, everything went black.

When the assistant awoke, blood trickled from his forehead. He coughed and looked around frantically.

Their car was lodged against a rocky slope, teetering dangerously near the edge of a ravine. Smoke rose from the engine.

But Wu Mei was gone.

"Miss Wu? Miss Wu!" he shouted, unbuckling his seatbelt and stumbling outside.

Panic set in as he searched the area, yelling her name.

She was nowhere.

Shaking, he pulled out his phone and called the only man who needed to know.

Qin Yanzhou's phone rang in the middle of a boardroom meeting.

He glanced at the screen.

His assistant.

He answered immediately.

"Sir, it's bad. We were hit. The car fell off the side of the road. I woke up, and Miss Wu is gone."

Qin Yanzhou stood, knocking his chair over.

"Gone? What do you mean gone?!" his voice thundered.

"She's not here! I searched everywhere! She disappeared!"

Qin Yanzhou clenched his fist. The temperature in the room dropped.

"Find her," he growled. "Find her even if you have to burn the whole world. And the people who did this... do not let them live."

His voice was cold, deadly.

"Yes, sir!"

Somewhere on the outskirts of the city, an old countryside home stood nestled between two hills. Inside, an elderly woman tended to a young girl lying on a worn-out couch.

Wu Mei.

She stirred slightly, her head pounding. A bandage was wrapped around her temple.

"Ah, you're awake," the woman said softly, placing a warm cloth on her forehead.

Wu Mei blinked, confused.

"W-Where am I?"

"Safe. You had an accident. I found you by the stream nearby and brought you here."

Wu Mei touched her head. "I... I don't remember anything."

The woman's eyes darkened with concern. "Not even your name?"

She shook her head slowly. "No..."

The woman sighed, brushing her gray hair behind her ear. "Then rest, child. Don't worry. Fate brought you to me for a reason."

Wu Mei closed her eyes again, her mind blank, her heart uncertain.

She didn't know who she was.

But somewhere, a man with fire in his heart was tearing apart the world to find her.

And no force on earth would stop him.

Would Wu Mei ever regain her memory… or would the two lovers never find their way back to each other again?
