"Have you truly forgotten me, little thing?"
The words had slipped out before Khaos could press them back behind his teeth. But as soon as the test was out in the air, he saw it—the shudder behind her eyes, a blink too slow; a breath too caught.
Ember Thorne or whatever she called herself now had become a different person, a skilled liar and actress. But it was clear that had not forgotten him, not even when he was convinced that he had wiped her memory clean.
She tried to deny it, of course. She wore the lie well like a dress—elegant, composed, almost believable. But Khaos had lived too long—watched too many mortals squirm beneath the weight of truths—to be fooled by an even voice or well rehearsed reflection.
So he extended his hand. Not to her, but to their shared memory of a night when she had lost everything she never had, and when he had lost the only thing he ever truly had—his brother, Alaric BlueBlood.
