Sid, after jogging for about ten minutes, slowed down as he reached the small hill. He immediately stopped in his tracks as he spotted two goblins standing guard in front of a cave entrance. He carefully hid himself behind a tree, the distance between him and the two goblins was enough to keep him undiscovered but also allowed Sid to keep an eye on the goblins.
As he hid behind the tree, he started thinking of all the ways he could kill the Goblins. But as seconds passed by, his heart thumped relentlessly. His determination wavered ' How? There's two of them, what if they ganged up on me?'
With doubt clouding his mind, he leaned slightly, getting a proper glimpse of the Goblins. They were short and, from what he saw, barely even reached his hips. They each wielded a wooden spear, crudely made with jagged tips. But they were skinny enough that it boosted Sid's wavering confidence to take them down.
He crouched down, leaning against the tree, he clenched his trembling hands." Come on Sid you can do this.." he whispered to himself.
Being a teenager, he had seen his fair share of skirmishes amongst the students of his school. And he himself had to fight once, not with his schoolmates, but against street thugs. Although he was beaten black and blue by the end, and his meager cash stolen, he did learn one thing that day-be ruthless. when it came to genuine fighting one must be ruthless. no holding back, no worries about hurting your opponent, cause they wouldn't care about you. The world had many cruel people- his old world did, and he was sure the new one had them too. and in the list of the cruel, he was damn sure the monsters ranked first.
Sid wearily eyed the goblins' spears, he noted that while they were spears, their crude construction meant the best they could was scratch his skin. And if stabbed, he contemplated, it wouldn't be a dangerous blow, unless it was aimed at his eyes.
'Should I just run towards them and fight it out?'
After confirming they weren't any real threat, Sid decided to attack them head on. He sneaked past the tress closing the distance between. As he reached the end of the tree line, he dashed. The goblins noticing him running towards them, raised their spears, their faces wearing a wicked grin, ready to pierce him.
Sid quickly grabbed the spear of one goblin, and yanked it towards him. the goblins grip faltered. Sid followed with a kick in it's stomach, sending it tumbling backwards.
As he readied the spear to give it a good beating, a sharp pain assaulted his back.
"kekeke ... kjarh.." The other goblin pierced Sid with its spear, its eyes gleaming with bloodlust.
"Damn...bastard!!" Sid gritted his teeth, holding back the urge to scream. The adrenaline helped him keep the pain at bay, for now
He took a step forward and turned on his heels. Without any delay, he smacked the wooden spear on to the goblin's head. It shrieked in pain, its spear hit the ground as it clutched its head.
Sid didn't stop, he viciously thrust the wooden spear into its throat. But the wood, lacking the sharpness of steel, didn't entirely pierce through its neck. But it did manage to lodge itself slightly in. Not satisfied, Sid withdrew and thrust again and again, puncturing its windpipe. Soon, the goblin fell, clutching its neck.
Sid breathed heavily, looking at the goblin as it choked on its own blood. 'That looks.. bad, this thing is definitely dying.'
Sid glanced at the tip of the spear, smeared with the goblin's blood. With disbelief etched into his face, he tried to calm himself.
The other goblin, seeing Sid distracted, picked up a stone and hurled it at Sid, hitting him right in his shoulders. Sid flinched back, glaring at the goblin, quiet rage bubbling in his eyes.
The goblin looked at Sid with weary eyes. It slowly retreated back. But Sid didn't allow it, he quickly stabbed it with his spear, this time aiming for the stomach. It landed, but again, it couldn't completely go through, though it still left an ugly wound.
The goblin, realizing it can't win, scurried back, screaming.
"Kaarghh"
'Shit.. there may be more goblins in the cave.' Sid ran after the remaining goblin, unsurprisingly Sid caught in mere seconds as it hadn't gone far with its speed.
Sid hurriedly crashed into the goblin, sending it down. And without any hesitation, started ramming his spear into the goblin's back. But this only made the goblin scream louder. Sid's eyes turned cold, he threw the spear aside, and brought his hands near the goblins neck. He held it in a choke hold, cutting of it's oxygen supply. The goblin writhed desperately beneath him, struggling to scream, only for Sid to tighten his grip and twist it's neck sideways, braking it in the process.
The goblin finally stopped moving. It's body fell limp on the ground a Sid let go.
And the next second, a blue panel popped up in his line of sight...
[ Beginner Mission completed: Kill a Goblin ]
[ Obtained 5 points ]
[ Obtained Inventory ]
[ First kill reward: Basic Sword×1, Basic Armor×1 ]
After reading the contents, a massive grin spread across Sid's face. his blood surged, heart hammered with excitement, momentarily forgetting the pain and fatigue.
"Inventory, sword, and an armor.." a shaky laugh escaped his lips, disbelief and joy mixed.
The system as if responding to his excitement, opened the inventory panel. The same light blue panel graced him, but this one was filled with boxes, all empty except for two.
Staring at the panel, Sid's hands involuntarily darted towards it, gently pressing. And instantly the armor materialized on his body.
It was a dark brown leather armor, covering him from chest to lower abdomen. It came along with arm guards covering his forearms. And neat-looking leather boots, dark brown, just like the rest of the armor.
Unable to hold back his curiosity, he then summoned the sword with a tap. It instantly appeared in Sid's hands, only to slip past his unprepared grip.
Sid awkwardly grabbed the hilt of the sword from the ground. He swung it a few times, trying to adjust to his new weapon.
As Sid was marveling at his newfound armor and sword, he heard a weak growl from behind.
He swiftly turned his head in caution, and saw the goblin whose neck he had wrecked.
"Damn, this guy is still alive." he whispered incredulously as he saw the goblin trying to crawl away towards the cave.
Seeing the goblin's desperate attempt to flee, Sid decided to end its misery. He aimed his sword at back of the crawling goblin, and brought it down, plunging it into the goblin.
[ Obtained: 5 points ]
"So I gain points by killing monsters....ok maybe I should stop calling these goblins monsters." Sid mused, now that he had fought and killed a goblin, his impression on these green creatures plummeted a lot.
All his life he believed monsters were something terrifying, creatures that normal people had no fighting chance against. Just like the ogre that killed him. All it needed to do was whack it's club and he was dead. It's mere presence terrorized him...and the others. That's what he considered a real monsters.
These goblins had no right to be called monsters, heck even he, a normal person without mana, could beat them.
Earlier he had been nervous and even slightly apprehensive about facing these creatures. But after going through with it, they seemed....weak.
Sure one had managed to land a hit on his back, but now that he's got an armor and a sword his win in future fights against these creatures almost looked guaranteed.
[ New Mission: Clear the Goblin cave ]
Seeing the new mission Sid chuckled
It was like the system could read his mind.
" The cave huh.." he whispered glancing at the cave. He ran his fingers over the armor. With the new armor and a sword, sid was confident he could easily kill them. And with the fight these goblins just put up, he bileived if he was cautious enough not to get ambushed, he should be fine.
Deciding to give the cave a shot, Sid warily walked towards the cave, ready to cull all the goblins in there.
