Chapter 8 - Episode 8:The Stranger Beside Me

Scene 1: Morning Awakening

Morning light filtered through the hospital curtains.

Maya's eyes opened slowly.

She looked around the quiet room, the steady beep of machines filling the silence.

Then she saw him—Caleb.

He sat beside her bed, head resting against the edge, completely exhausted.

His hair was messy, and his eyes were closed, heavy with fatigue.

It was clear he hadn't slept all night.

----

Scene 2: Confused Thoughts

Who is he...?Maya wondered.

Why is he here...?

Why hasn't he left...?

Why does he care so much about me..?

She didn't remember him—not really.

But for some reason, the idea of him being here all night made her chest tighten.

Caleb didn't move. His breathing was slow and even, but heavy with exhaustion.

Maya's eyes lingered on him.

He looked so different like this—vulnerable, tired, almost human.

For a moment, she forgot all her questions.

She just watched.

Maya stared at him silently. She didn't know why.

There was something strange about the way he sat there, like he'd been guarding her the whole night.

Her eyes lingered on his face, on the lines of fatigue carved into it.

---

Scene 3: The Moment

The door creaked open.

A nurse walked in, clipboard in hand, heels tapping softly against the floor.

The sound stirred Caleb.

His fingers twitched. Then, slowly, his eyes opened.

Still half-asleep, his gaze went straight to her.

Maya froze.

Their eyes met.

His were groggy, heavy—but the moment they locked onto hers, they sharpened.

Maya's breath caught.

She quickly turned her face away, pretending to look at the ceiling.

Caleb sat up slowly, still watching her.

Neither of them said a word.

The nurse checked Maya's vitals quietly.

Nurse:

"All looks good. Try to eat something today," she said softly.

She glanced at Caleb.

"You should get some rest too."

Then she left the room.

---

Scene 4: Unspoken care

Henrik stood near the door, waiting.

Caleb didn't even look at him.

Caleb:

"Tell the nurses to come on time. No delays."

His voice was low, firm.

Caleb:

"She needs to be checked every three hours."

Henrik:

"Yes, Boss."

Inside the room, the air was still.

Machines hummed softly.

Maya lay there, her face pale but calm.

Her hands were still weak.

Her body—wounded.

But Caleb… never left.

He stayed in the same chair.

Same clothes. Same posture.

Eyes fixed on her.

As if watching her breathe gave him peace.

---

He didn't speak to her.

Didn't try to wake her.

But he was there.

When the doctor entered, Caleb stood up immediately.

Caleb:

"Her condition?"

Doctor:

"She's healing. She just needs rest and stable care."

Caleb's eyes darkened.

"You'll give her better than stable. You'll give her the best."

---

Later, he sat again.

He hadn't slept properly in days.

But he didn't care.

This was the same girl who had once looked at him with fire.

Now… she couldn't even speak.

And it was all his fault.

---

The next day, she tried to sit.

Her hand shook.

He reached out and held her arm — steady, firm.

No words. No expression.

Just a quiet presence.

---

Henrik came in again.

Caleb spoke without looking at him.

Caleb:

"She didn't eat yesterday. Make sure the food is warm today. Tell the nurse to come at nine. Not ten."

Henrik:

"Yes, Boss."

Scene 5:Silent healing

Time passed.

Days blurred.

Caleb handled everything.

He talked to doctors.

Controlled the men.

Oversaw the guards.

But every evening…

He returned to her room.

And sat.

And watched.

Maya could feel it now.

Scene 6: Breaking the Silence

The room fell silent again.

Maya fiddled with her blanket but didn't look at Caleb.

After a pause, she said quietly,

"You're always here…"

Caleb looked up, surprised she spoke first.

"I thought you were asleep."

"I was. Not for long."

Maya turned her head slightly, meeting his eyes.

"Who are you to me? Why do you stay?"

Caleb's jaw tightened.

"You don't remember anything?"

"No. Nothing."

"Maybe it's better that way."

---

Scene 7: The Warning

Caleb's phone buzzed.

He checked the screen.

A message from Henrik:

"A car circled the hospital twice. Didn't stop. Be alert."

Caleb locked the phone and put it away.

His shoulders straightened.

Maya noticed the change.

Something had shifted.

Henrik appeared outside the room.

Caleb stepped into the hallway.

Caleb:

"Double the security. Nobody walks this floor without my clearance."

Henrik nodded.

"I'll handle it."

---

Maya's gaze shifted quietly toward the man seated near her.

He wasn't looking at her this time.

He was simply… there.

And for the first time—

She didn't feel alone.

She closed her eyes.

Not because she was tired.

But because—for once—

She felt safe.

---

Meanwhile…

Down in the hospital's underground parking,

A man stepped out of a black SUV.

His face was hidden, his movements sharp.

Phone pressed to his ear.

A low voice echoed:

"She's still alive."

A pause. Then—

"Not for long."

To be continued....

End of Episode 8.
