Chapter 19 - Jet engines and tar

"Fat bomb! 3 meters ahead of you!" Olivia yelled, her power flaring up since this was not her first time dealing with a speedster.

Details flooded her brain from just reading Max's facial expression to her own ears, grasping at each possible sliver of sound and cross-referencing her memories, trying to find a similarity.

The young man didn't even nod; he just pulled out one biological grenade he had created to deal with groups of zombies.

From the palm of his hand, that black bump of flesh filled with a thick substance rich in body oils came, and he threw it just right in front of the monorail door separating the car before it exploded.

Two things happened at the same time. The metallic door was just torn from its hinges, falling to the ground, and something rushed out of it. However, as it tried to quickly recover from hitting the metallic barrier, Max's grenade exploded, covering the floor with a thick layer of slippery translucent tar.

"Out of the way!" The Latina yelled, and the whole group ran to the walls to dodge the incoming attack.

The zombie was a blur in motion. A black stain with purple and yellow highlights that concentrated on the creature's back, where a bright cylindrical source of ignition could be seen.

That thing just ignited its back and exploded forward, trying to aim for Olivia, who was just in front of it. However, the lack of grip, thanks to the substances covering its body and the floor, made it miss such an easy target.

It was like a chain snapping from tension; it did a sharp and close spin in the air to then crash against one of the monorail walls, half its long and naked body on the outside through the window and the other half inside.

As the stench of burned plastic lingered in the air and glass shards were still falling to the ground, Cat went to stab the monster while it was down.

"Stop!" Olivia yelled, and the redhead stopped her spear for a second, just enough time not to be caught by the zombie getting his long and almost beak-like head back into the monorail to unleash a blast of pure heat from it.

A beam of pure concentrated steam and energy blasted a hole in the car's metallic roof, overheating and expelling its own fluids with the same speed and potency it used to move.

Just at that second, Ange aimed to hit it on the head, but the monster was too fast, and it already flew like a loose brick in a hurricane through the room, not only making the psycho miss but also forcing the whole team to duck down.

The spread of steel beads landed on its legs, just as Olivia had planned, damaging them to the point where they could not withstand the weight of the biological jet engine on its back.

"Max tanks, Cat behind!" Olivia ordered, and the team followed her lead.

The young man jumped in front of the monster, and without wasting time, using his enhanced reflexes and strength, he delivered an uppercut with his metal bar.

A loud ringing sound stopped the buzzing of that engine as the flat metal tip infused with pure electricity struck that black beak. Energy mixed with pure biological might shattered the beak and stunned the monster.

On that second, Cat stepped forward, using the strength of her biological exoskeleton and spear to stab the monster in the chest, impaling it on the roof. The bone weapon was able to not only pass through its ribcage but also get stuck between the biological turbines that rotate inside that engine on its back.

It squirmed and thrashed, the recently shocked nerves trying to recover as its mangled legs and long fingers tried to grab Cat, but the spear made enough distance to make that impossible.

"Stay there!" Cat's second worst enemy yelled to her as the head of the zombie began to flare up with pure heat.

She didn't budge an inch. Cat had more than enough reasons to distrust Olivia and think this was a trick to get rid of her. That slimy and egocentric bag of trash deserved each sliver of scorn she had for her, but the healer knew something: Olivia's ego was bigger than her common sense. She would never let a chance to flex her powers go to waste, and a perfect victory like this was just too juicy for her.

When it tried to blast Cat away, the broken chunks of its beak got in the way, blocking the way out of the steam and fluids until it exploded, blowing up its head. Raining gore all over the car.

A last death rattle was followed by a loud and wet thud sound, the corpse falling to the ground completely still.

"Awwwwwww, the compass is ruined . . . still, great job, Olivia!" Ange exclaimed, trying to hide her initial disappointment as she cleaned the red and black gore from her face.

Olivia just ducked out of the way at the last moment, dodging the infected flesh just in case, but honestly, it was to hide her smug smile.

Max took a deep breath, his body shaking from the aftermath of using his electric powers. "Ah . . . ah . . . that was fast . . ." he mumbled; the fight only lasted one minute tops.

"Those are speedsters for you; they never have a lot of durability," Cat added and then just sat on a chair, the fleshy hood covering her head slowly peeling off to give her some fresh air. Air that reeked of burned plastic and meat, but still, better than the musky interior of that biological armor.

"I tried to fix that sometimes, but it always got messy; the parts just made them slower or peel off from the high-speed vibrations," Ange mumbled, trying to make small talk with Cat.

"I must be crazy, but I don't remember asking you anything," the Scottish girl spat back, not even sounding cheeky or joking around.

"Ooops, sorry," Ange apologized.

A few minutes later, after shoving the corpses out the monorail window and cleaning the gore, Olivia sat beside Max.

"Well, what do you think about my performance?" She asked, trying to fish for compliments from the man, as their survival was not the only reward she wanted. Olivia had an addiction that only stands, yes-men, and fans could fulfill.

"Honestly? That was amazing; without you, we could have lost the monorail," Max answered, taking a good look at the girl who was almost touching him.

Olivia nodded. "Good . . . good . . . what else?" She muttered and tried to get something else.

Max didn't know what to say; he was actually still thinking about how he almost got turned into mincemeat by the zombie. "You . . . have a nice ass?" He mumbled, that was the only other thing he could think about Olivia now.

The girl let out a defeated sigh. It was fine for her; he was still learning. "You really need to work on your ass-kissing game if you want to make this relationship last," she explained, since Olivia wanted to keep Max as a goon after all of this was over.

"Don't do it; she is going to ruin you," Cat warned him not to continue this relationship. She just did not respect Olivia enough to not barge in on their conversation.

The need to be the smartest person in the room won over her common sense. "Like you ruined your dad?" She answered, destroying each small grain or sliver of goodwill that Max had tried to construct between the two with a single sentence.

"Do you want to get shanked, whore? We have time before the train arrives!" Cat screeched at her, rage building up in her body for a second.

"See, Max?! Just a comment, and she exploded," the woman spewed with pure malice as she hugged the neck of the man and looked at Cat, squinting her eyes and smiling.

This act would not stand.

"Ah! What was that for?!" Olivia screeched, now bending over the man's lap and getting slapped on the ass by him.

Max lifted his hand on the air and slapped that perfect and fat posterior covered in black spandex once again while Cat was laughing in the background. "For taunting Cat and trying to manipulate me," he said to her, enjoying the sensation of his digits sinking into those soft mountains.

Olivia let out another yelp of pain; she was blushing more from the fact that she was enjoying this than from the public humiliation. "Puta madre, fair!" She screamed, so focused on the stinging pain that she didn't even realize that Ange was nowhere to be seen.

"Come on, lad, play her like a bongo!" Cat cheered Max up; she could get behind a friend being on her side and removing that smug smile from her nemesis.

When the monorail arrived, they were shocked by the light of the station. That dim energy radiance was replaced by a bright and healthy white light that showed the metal walls and concrete floors in all their abandoned glory. Still, the bloodstains gave this place a grim look.
