Chapter 47: Vaccination (Part 2)
"Teacher, did you come to pick me up on purpose?"
Sasuke asked. His white, tender little face was still quite round, very different from the handsome Sasuke of the future.
"Haha, look at you. I'm here to pick you both up today."
Hearing that Kaien came specifically to pick them up, Naruto was also very happy.
Although Kaien had always treated him well, he rarely had time to spend with him.
Just being picked up from school was enough to make Naruto overjoyed.
How lacking in love this child must have been in the past...
Damn that Third Hokage.
Kaien grew even more determined. Such a simple-hearted child must not be corrupted by the darkness of the world.
"Let's go."
Kaien began walking and spoke to the two boys:
"Did you hear any rumors today?"
Naruto scratched his head.
"A lot of classmates said that Jiraiya-sama got arrested."
Kaien was surprised it had already spread through the ninja academy by noon.
"Who is that?"
Naruto asked curiously. They had just entered the ninja school and hadn't learned much yet.
Sasuke answered,
"Jiraiya is one of the Legendary Sannin and a student of the Third Hokage. He's a hero of Konoha."
"A hero?"
Naruto looked confused.
"If he's a hero, why was he arrested?"
Kaien replied plainly,
"Because he was caught peeping at the women's bath."
Sasuke immediately showed a disgusted expression.
"Why would someone do that?"
Naruto, who had grown up without guidance, was still like a blank slate.
Kaien rubbed Naruto's head.
Before, no one had even taught this boy how to dress properly—no one cared.
But now, Naruto seemed to have started realizing the importance of his image.
His hair was soft now. If the hair on the sides were longer, he'd look just like his father, Minato.
"You're still young. You may not understand it now, but you should know this: peeping on women is wrong."
"Oh…"
Naruto nodded slowly, trying to understand.
Kaien continued,
"Let's say you have a female classmate you're close with. Do you?"
Naruto nodded, lacing his fingers together:
"Yeah. Hinata, Sakura, and Ino—we're all friends."
"And how would you feel if someone peeked at them while they were taking a shower?"
Naruto frowned and thought for a moment. Then he clenched his right fist into his left palm and declared:
"I'd be mad! I might even punch them!"
Kaien nodded, satisfied.
"Exactly. That's why you shouldn't do such things. People who do are lacking in character. No matter how powerful they are—like the so-called Legendary Sannin—if they behave like that, they're just lecherous creeps."
"Don't worry, Kaien-senpai! I'll never do anything like that!"
Naruto patted his chest proudly.
Kaien turned to Sasuke.
"What about you, Sasuke?"
Sasuke turned his head arrogantly.
"I wouldn't do something so childish. I'm from the Uchiha clan."
Kaien rolled his eyes.
If only you weren't so stiff. If not for someone else forcing things later on, you'd have been single forever in your past life.
"Naruto, I heard your grades aren't very good."
Kaien asked, changing the subject.
Naruto scratched his head, looking embarrassed.
"Kaien-senpai, the stuff at school is hard. I learn slowly."
Kaien didn't blame him. Naruto used to be just a wild child, after all. Expecting him to become a top student immediately was unrealistic.
"It's okay, Naruto. Even if you're not good at bookwork now, you can improve. But you'll need to work hard on everything else, too. Don't end up at the bottom of the class forever."
Naruto nodded firmly.
"Don't worry, Kaien-senpai! I'll work hard!"
Seeing how much Kaien cared for Naruto, Sasuke felt a sudden pang of jealousy—but he quickly shook it off.
Watching Naruto's happy face, Sasuke couldn't help but smile too.
For the rest of the walk, Kaien asked about Naruto's living situation and what Sasuke had been learning in school.
The three of them talked and laughed along the way.
But nearby, the Anbu watching them were extremely nervous.
Every time Kaien visited Naruto, they were on edge, worried he'd try to manipulate the boy somehow.
Especially after what happened with Jiraiya earlier today… Kaien had thoroughly humiliated him.
They were just lowly Anbu, trembling in fear as they observed.
But Kaien didn't care about their suspicions. He acted simply as an elder—
checking on Naruto, making sure he was doing okay, and then escorted him home without doing anything questionable.
Only then did the Anbu finally breathe a sigh of relief and retreat.
…
As Kaien walked Sasuke home toward the Uchiha clan compound, he took out an envelope.
"This is a letter from Itachi."
"Ah!"
Sasuke's eyes lit up with joy.
Even though he knew he'd see his brother again someday, Itachi's departure still left him feeling lonely.
Sasuke eagerly opened the envelope, right in front of Kaien, not hiding it at all.
Although the letter wasn't long, Sasuke read it several times before gently placing it back in the envelope.
Kaien chuckled.
Sasuke is cute at this age.
"What did Itachi say?"
he asked.
Sasuke smiled brightly.
"Big brother said I should listen to you, study hard at school, and not bring shame to the Uchiha clan."
That sounds just like Itachi.
At Sasuke's age, Itachi was already on the battlefield.
Afterward, they returned to the compound, but Fugaku was out—probably busy dealing with something related to the compensation from the Yunyin incident.
Just as Kaien was about to leave, he asked Sasuke:
"Sasuke, what do you think of Naruto?"
Sasuke blinked.
"What do you mean?"
"What kind of person is he?"
Sasuke muttered "an idiot" under his breath, but still answered honestly:
Naruto is kind and friendly. He's a bit simple. Even when people mock him behind his back, he never seems to care."
Kaien nodded. Sasuke wasn't wrong.
You could say Naruto was open-minded… or just naive.
But considering the harsh environment he grew up in, it was impressive that he hadn't turned bitter.
Satisfied, Kaien asked again:
"And what do you think of his strength?"
Sasuke looked confused.
"Strength? What strength? Naruto can't even pass his classes. He definitely couldn't beat me in a fight."
Sasuke looked proud, his little face full of "Praise me, praise me!"
Kaien smiled.
"Sasuke, don't get too full of yourself. Right now, you're stronger because you had your parents around to guide and train you. Naruto had no one."
Sasuke crossed his arms.
"Even if someone teaches him, he'll never be as good as me. I'm a Uchiha!"
Kaien smirked.
"Then how about we make a bet?"
"What kind of bet?"
Sasuke asked.
"If Naruto beats you in anything during your time at the ninja academy, you lose."
"If you're always better than him, then you win."
Sasuke grinned confidently.
"You're on, sensei! I'm going to win for sure!"
Kaien smiled.
"Alright. If you win, I'll give you a treasure."
"And if I lose?"
Sasuke asked, still smug.
"Then you'll have to do something for me."
"What is it?"
Kaien smirked.
"Haven't decided yet."
…
