Chapter 15 - A Sister's Vow

"So I get you're very upset, but…," started Anna.

Lyra interrupted Anna, jumping to her feet, "No, it's fine. I just need some time to myself." Before walking away from the group, going towards the pond that's at the edge of the training ground they've been using.

Onyx and Sami looked at her walking, heads tilted in confusion at Lyra's action. In the past month of knowing each other, neither of them has seen her like this before. Neither of them knew what to say as Anna sat there quietly, just staring at the ground. Both Onyx and Sami started to pack up the tents and threw dirt on the fire, pretty much cleaning up the area.

After about an hour, most of the camp was packed. Only things left were Anna and Lyra's stuff. The wooden dummy was made by magic so it'll eventually disappear once they leave. Sami glanced at Anna, noticing she was now sitting on the ground.

He turned back to his satchel, making sure he understood all of his things. Sami didn't want to disturb her, especially since she was actually quiet for once. Anna, though feeling the small gaze on her, decided to speak up.

"I know you want to ask what's going on, Sami," murmured Anna, still staring at the ground where she was sitting.

Sami tripped over a rock at the sudden voice but quickly caught himself. "Honestly, after training with you teacher, I've learned in some situations it's best to wait until you get information before attacking ," he replied as he continued to pack up his clothes and other necessities they needed to take with them.

"YES, MY PRECIOUS STUDENT PICKING UP ON MY LESSONS", screamed Anna punching the air in excitement

Sami couldn't help but sweat drop at her reactions. "Right well when you guys are ready to tell me, I'll listen to the problem. Plus, Onyx went to go comfort her, so hopefully that'll help them.", Sami finished.

Anna quickly appeared in front of Sami, grabbing his shoulders. "YOU LET MY BUNNY COMFORT SOMEONE ELSE AND NOT ME?!" she bawled. Tears ran down her face as she shook Sami back and forth.

"Onyx said that she wanted to check on Lyra to make sure she was okay so we can leave soon!" Sami replied, still being shaken by Anna as her crying started to get even worse.

---

Onyx thought she heard screaming and just shrugged it off before making her way towards Lyra. She saw Lyra sitting in dirt, water slowly reaching her feet before retracting. Lyra was hugging her knees as she stared out across the ocean.

Onyx slowly approached, sitting right next to her without making any noise. While the mood was somber, Onyx couldn't help but enjoy the scenery. Being able to see the fish swim free in the water, and on the other side of the pond seeing animals grazing, made for a beautiful look.

"He was my first teammate, Gin," Lyra hesitated, breaking the silence that had settled over them. "No, more like my first student if you'll ask me. I ended up teaching him how to fight, and eventually how to control his magic. He was very reliable, someone I looked to as an older brother.

Lyra stopped for a moment as she gathered her thoughts, "Even though he was older than me, he wasn't practically good at anything. Yet he kept trying so hard to be better. Always practice and try new techniques."

Onyx's ears perked up as she listened to Lyra talk. "How did you guys meet, or at least be assigned to the same team?" she inquired.

"Master Mercer randomly one day after training with Teacher Anna said I need to learn how to work with others," Lyra replied, hugging her knees closer to her chest as she remembered.

"Most of the other students didn't like me much, especially since I got extra training from both top two fighters from the war. Using every excuse to bring me down, including mocking my orphaned status. Gin was also experiencing similar issues though it was more so with who his clan was." She finished.

"Clan?" puzzled Onyx. "What do you mean by clan? Was he from a special family of nobles?"

"Yeah, the Uchians were a clan, in our terms they would be a noble family. In fact, their specialty was space magic," Lyra answered. "The clan originated from our rivals in the east as a part of a peace treaty. Although they were being hunted down for their abilities so we tried to save as many as we could but few remained, Gin being one of them at the time."

"Wait, so this mission…" Onyx began.

"Is about burying the teammate that lost his life saving mine," she interrupted. "I assume we will be protecting his mother since it's the only thing I can think of."

Onyx, knowing what to say, just sat there with her, thinking over things she just learned. Though it wouldn't last as Onyx was rapidly pulled into a tight hug. She was squeezed tightly as she was trying to break the hold.

"BUNNY, NEVER LEAVE ME AGAIN!" Anna sobbed, constantly shaking Onyx back and forth.

Lyra, though still sad, couldn't help but smile at the scene. Shaking her head in amusement, she decided to go back to camp.

Just get her stuff packed so they can hit the road to where the mission is starting. Standing up, Lyra brushed the dirt off the back of her pants before quickly marching away from the comedic scene.

"WAIT!" Onyx shouted. "Please, Lyra, don't leave me here!"

"NO, MY PRECIOUS BUNNY STAYS!" Anna answered the cry for help.

Lyra just walked quicker back to where they had the tents, ignoring the shouting going on. After minutes, she saw Sami, his back turned to her as he was sorting through his stuff. She noticed the tents were down and the fire pit was covered. Lyra was grateful that he ended up getting the majority of the stuff put away, making less work for her.

Sami noticed that Lyra was back but didn't say anything, just nodded to himself as she started packing her stuff. He couldn't help but feel excited at the potential mission, this being something he always dreamed of.

Instead of being stuck reading about adventures, he can finally experience it. Well, experience one that doesn't have him almost dying. Though this time is different; he actually has some training and isn't making it up as he is going along with it.

Through all his excitement, he couldn't help but worry about Lyra. Maybe while they're walking he could ask if she's okay. At the moment though, he doesn't want to bother her as it seems she's in deep thought.
