Chapter 18 - The Babysitter — Chapter 17: Breathing

The basement door hung open like a yawning mouth.

Dark. Quiet.

Waiting.

Alex, inhabiting Maya's body, stared into the void, every instinct screaming at her to slam it shut and run. But the Fear System pulsed in the back of her mind, urging her forward.

[System Alert: Phase Two Initiated]

Entity Status: Manifested Presence Confirmed

Behavior Escalation: Imminent Physical Contact

Task Updated: Confront the Entity to Delay Advance

Optional Task: Seal Basement Door (30-sec time limit)

The silence broke.

From the darkness below, a breath—long, deep, wet. Like someone had been holding it in for too long and finally let go. It echoed up the stairs, coating the hallway in ice.

Then came the footsteps.

One step.

Two.

Slow. Confident.

Alex slammed the basement door and shoved the bolt into place just as the doorknob twitched beneath her fingers.

Click… click… click.

The knob stopped.

But the breathing didn't.

"Gracie," Alex hissed, turning toward the couch.

The little girl was now fully awake, wide-eyed, clutching her stuffed rabbit. "What's happening?" she whispered.

Alex crouched, brushing the child's hair back. "We're playing a quiet game, okay? You have to stay right here. Don't open the front door. Don't go upstairs. Don't make a sound."

Gracie nodded, too scared to ask why.

The lights were still out. The emergency flashlight flickered weakly in her hand. The ambient glow from the phone barely cut through the dark.

She needed the power back.

[System Suggestion: Reactivate Fuse Box – Location: Basement, Rear Left Corner]

Warning: Entity Proximity—30 ft

Alternate Path Required: Unknown. Search Nearby Areas.

Alex swore under her breath. The fuse box was in the basement—with him.

But she couldn't leave the house in darkness. Not when the system had made it clear the entity could escalate to full manifestation. That meant it could touch them now.

She looked back at the bolted door. No new movement.

Then—

A single breath blew through the cracks in the wood.

Warm.

And followed by a whisper:

"You're getting closer to me."

She needed an alternate route. Fast.

She grabbed her phone and opened the camera app. Night vision mode—barely functional, but enough to spot a sliver of possibility: a vent near the base of the hallway wall. Large enough for a child… or someone Maya's size, if she squeezed.

She dropped to her knees and pried off the rusted grill.

Behind it, a tunnel of sheet metal winding into shadows.

Where did it go?

She didn't know.

But she was out of time.

"Gracie," she whispered. "Hide under the couch. Right now. Don't come out, no matter what."

The girl obeyed without question, slipping into the narrow space and clutching her rabbit like a lifeline.

Alex entered the vent.

The metal groaned with every movement. Her knees scraped. Sweat pooled beneath her shirt. The heat in the vent was suffocating.

And then—cool air.

She reached an opening.

A vent led down—into the basement.

She hesitated.

From below came the faint sound of humming.

A lullaby.

"Rock-a-bye baby… on the tree top…"

Alex gritted her teeth and dropped.

Her feet hit concrete. She stumbled into the pitch-black void of the basement, heart hammering.

The humming stopped.

Something knew she was there now.

The flashlight stuttered, revealing the edge of a tool bench, a stack of boxes, and—finally—the fuse box.

She moved fast, flipping it open and scanning for the tripped breaker.

Then—

A whisper from the left:

"I'm right here."

She turned.

Nothing.

But the breathing started again—close. Behind her.

She flipped the switch.

Light flooded the house.

And a hand grabbed her shoulder.

She whirled, knife in hand, slashing through air.

The figure stood barely a foot away.

Dressed in black.

Face concealed by a porcelain mask—cracked, grinning.

It tilted its head.

Then vanished, swallowed into the air like smoke.

The Fear System pulsed.

[Entity Contact Confirmed – Shadow Phase Fully Initiated]

Next Confrontation in 13 minutes (approx.)

Exit Option Unlocked: Back Door Now Operational

New Objective: Retrieve Gracie and Escape the House

Alex didn't hesitate.

She ran back to the vent, climbed, crawled, and spilled into the hallway. Light now filled the room, exposing every corner.

Gracie was gone.

The couch was overturned.

Only the stuffed rabbit remained, its arms outstretched toward the hallway stairs.

A note pinned to its chest.

"You forgot the rules."

[System Notice: Entity Break Phase Detected – Rules Must Be Restored]

Your Mistake: Leaving the Host Alone

Correction Required: Reset Entity's Ritual Pattern

Method: Reestablish Silence, Order, Isolation

Alex's fingers trembled.

"Gracie!" she shouted. "Where are you?!"

No response.

She raced upstairs.

Bedroom—empty.

Closet—open.

Bathroom—faucet running, mirror cracked.

She turned it off.

Then paused.

The tub was full.

And floating in it—

Gracie's pajamas.

Still warm.

No blood.

But no sign of her.

Then the mirror pulsed.

Alex leaned in.

Words formed in the fog.

"Find me before I forget who I am."

A timer started.

23 minutes.

She turned and sprinted down the hall.

Every door she opened now led to somewhere new.

Not rooms.

But memories.

A field. A burning tree. A hallway of red doors. A phone off the hook.

Each memory whispered:

"Too late."

"Too slow."

"She's mine now."

Then—one door.

Normal.

Wooden.

The doorknob pulsed warm.

She opened it.

And found Gracie.

She stood in the center of a small, candlelit room. Her eyes were blank. Her lips moving slowly.

Reciting.

"Rock-a-bye baby…"

Alex stepped inside.

The door closed behind her.

The Caller stood in the corner, arms outstretched.

No mask now.

Just a face—her face.

Twisted. Inverted. Smiling too wide.

He spoke in her voice.

"Maya, you were such a good girl. So brave. So loud."

"But you left her alone."

Alex stepped between him and Gracie.

"No more games."

He tilted his head.

"This isn't a game."

"It's a performance."

And then he lunged.

Alex raised the knife.

Too slow.

But Gracie moved first.

She stepped forward.

Wrapped her arms around Alex's waist.

And screamed.

The walls shattered.

Candles blew out.

The Caller shrieked and burst into a cloud of static, howling into the void.

[System Alert: Ritual Broken – Victim Connection Preserved]

Gracie's Identity Reinforced. Entity Repelled.

Exit Option: FRONT DOOR – Unlocked

Time Remaining: 3 Hours, 42 Minutes

Alex scooped Gracie into her arms.

Ran downstairs.

Threw open the door.

And escaped into the night.
