Chapter 29 - PX-11

The live footage from the drone showed the admiral in a combat suit confronting F01. Citizens in the shelter all glared at the monitor. Freja communicated with her son through a headset. No one among the crowd had noticed that two people were missing: Pierre and Elena.

Upon running back into the NRE building, Pierre observed the situation closely through his watch, which projected the footage in the air. Elena kept her eyes on the footage as well. He watched Karl, in a combat suit designed by Freja, fight hand to hand with F01. Pierre asked Elena to help him prepare ingredients.

"What is that creature exactly?" Elena asked him.

"It's got the missing cadet's body. I guess Freja uploaded many memories or data to it," Pierre told her calmly, while the two stepped up.

"That's a bitch!" Elena spoke out. "How can she get your code?"

"It's Freja; she is an expert in programming and biotech, with the idea from your report," Pierre explained, describing Freja's skill. "I bet she can recreate the code."

Elena felt uneasy, as her project could be a military weapon. "But why NRE?" Elena asked, voicing her concerns. "My guess is that the cadet, or what was the cadet, still remembered who killed him," Pierre said boldly.

Elena knew her sense was right. That night, after the cadet tried to hit her, Pierre went into an outrage and murdered the cadet. Elena felt unease, as she was part of this incident. "So my guess was right; it was you."

"No guilt, Elena. I did what I wanted to. It's not your fault."

Pierre tried to relieve her, as if he could read her mind. But his words did not help, since the fact that she was part of his motivation weighed on her.

The two reached the second floor, while Karl, at the ground floor, stepped back, preparing for a mid-range attack.

"Karl will not hold much longer," Pierre said.

"Why? He's got his suit," Elena said, confused with the situation. The suit that could dominate the Franks' army and annihilate the recent York's invasion.

"Freja must have uploaded Karl's martial arts and other combat data to its muscles," Pierre said. His words stunned Elena, as she stopped walking. Pierre saw her, then grabbed her arm, and brought her mind back.

"You don't mean…" Elena murmured. No words from Pierre, but he nodded.

Elena and Pierre then walked to the synthesizing lab. The door slid open. Inside were several chambers and lab tools.

"What do you have in mind?" Elena asked for more information, as he had not explained his plan until now. "You have your neutron destabilizer here?" Elena recalled Pierre's most powerful creation. "It is in my house. We have no time and cannot risk drawing that thing to the living area," Pierre replied to Elena. Then he continued to explain his idea.

"That thing has regeneration ability, complex brain functions, and muscle structure," Pierre added. "But still, it is a mammal, containing thousands or millions of eukaryotic cells." Elena caught Pierre's thought. "I will start the calcium-complex chamber." "You are brilliant, Elena," Pierre said. Elena flustered as Pierre praised her. Pierre switched his watch to another panel; it showed a list of chemical compounds that he needed. On top of the panel was the name "PX-11."

Pierre walked to the console; he opened the panel of the supply unit. He delayed his hands, as something concerned his mind. Elena finished warming up the machine and saw his pause. "What's wrong?" she asked, walking to him.

"If I order from here, this will leave a record in the FRI, and the military will know," Pierre explained. "We have no time for the right wing." It was at that moment when Karl finally beheaded F01.

"Look! Karl did it," Elena pointed to the screen. Pierre still showed his concern, his face staring at the headless beast. "This ain't good."

"I will erase the record later," Pierre said, then his hands typed in the substances he needed:

Ca2+ solutionGlutamateCyanide

"And calcitriol," Elena added. Pierre turned to her, as if he had almost missed something important. He gave her a soft kiss. "Thank you, Elena." He entered the final substances.

Not long after, all substances arrived from the supply unit in the right wing to the synthesizing lab. Pierre took all the substances and arranged them in the calcium-complex machine, while Elena stood beside him.

The final products came; they were pills composed of calcium ions and other substances that aided cell apoptosis.

For every eukaryotic cell, the mitochondrion is a cell's power plant. In a normal amount, it absorbs calcium to produce ATP (a cell's energy), but too much calcium will collapse the mitochondria. No mitochondria, then no energy.

"But you said that thing can regenerate," Elena asked. "It can, but without fuel, the regeneration is slower than cell apoptosis," Pierre replied.

By the time the pills were finished, the live footage from Pierre's watch showed the headless F01 back in action. "It's moving again," Elena said, expressing concern. "Karl won't hold that long."

Not long after, a gun was delivered from the supply to the lab. "Now we can end this," Pierre said.

Pierre and Elena went to a nearby window; they tried to hide their presence from the video drone. Using the connection from his watch to the gun, he could aim while hiding behind the shadow in the building.

"Target locked." The panel on his watch displayed the crosshair locked on F01. It was at that moment when the monster grabbed and smashed Karl on the ground. Pierre fired all the bullet pills. No one noticed.

A few seconds later, the monster's figure became unstable, turning into a collapsing husk filled with cellular sludge.

The two sat on the floor, as the pressure from a minute earlier took its toll.

"You did it, Pierre," Elena softly congratulated him.

"With your help, Elena," Pierre thanked her.

With passion, they kissed each other – followed by other romance's actions – ignoring the crowd and noisy situations outside the building.
