Chapter 8 - The Bizarre Legend of No. 70 High School

Everyone had heard this fact from a young age — No. 70 High School used to be a graveyard.

Although Xero had no way of officially checking if this was true or not, the fact was that he could tell the ground he was stepping on really used to be a graveyard. The price for graveyard land had always been cheap, and seven hundred years ago, this land had been acquired by the government's Education Department, which was when No. 70 High School had been built.

Xero's hair stood on end in thought.

No. 70 High School's sports field used to be a graveyard, and now energetic bastards are jumping around every morning to the two hundred and sixtieth set of radio gymnastics, which was no different than disco dancing on some graves!

This would explain why many queer things had shown up in their Dao Talisman class.

In simpler terms, It was reasonable for Xero to be worried.

He was unable to precisely control the release of his spirit energy. In addition, No. 70 High School used to be a graveyard. With these two lethal components combined, Xero couldn't guarantee he could summon a weird looking ghost that Teacher Hōtaru could deal with…

Noticing that Xero was slow to act, Teacher Hōtaru slowly strolled over to him, her hands clasped behind her back. In her mind, if it wasn't because Xero had good luck, then it was a glitch in the system that enabled him to enter advanced class. In fact, he seemed to be a real deadbeat.

"Why aren't you drawing your talisman? Perhaps you didn't understand my explanation? I can guide you through it!"

Excuse me, didn't understand?

That was simply an insult to his intelligence.

In his mind, Xero silently rolled his eyes at Teacher Hōtaru, this was a matter between life and death! What did she know?!

But in this situation, he wasn't the one making decisions. While staying low-key is the most important. He also didn't want to be pointed by people as someone who had just snuck into advanced class by luck.

Staring deeply into the yellow talisman paper, Xero exhaled, then lifted the writing brush.

At this moment, he could only try his best to control the release of his spirit energy…

The moment the talisman was completed, Xero was already holding his breath. The students around him watched eagerly, looking forward to a show.

Like for everyone else, the yellow talisman floated in the air, and then was followed by a dazzling light.

Then a monstrous, dark grayish silhouette appeared before everyone's eyes.

In an instant, Teacher Hōtaru turned petrified.

The surrounding students turned petrified.

Even Xero himself turned petrified!

The sky-swallowing wolf had never expected that through this method, for the third time in his life, it would be confronted by the very person whose existence is like a shadow over it.

Given Xero's strength, if he couldn't control his spirit energy, odds were that he could summon an imperial-ranked spirit .

After its spirit had been sealed, the sky-swallowing wolf had exhausted all its options before gold of its soul had broken off and was able to escape the seal. But little did it think that Xero would summon it again.

At that moment, the poor wolf's heart crumbled a little.

Looking at Xero, its cold sweat flowed non-stop.

"Woof…" The moment it called out, it wanted to cry but it couldn't since it had no tears left.

It had already detected Xero's killing intent, if he made the slightest hint of a suspicious move, it didn't doubt that Xero would very quickly dispatch it with no hesitation.

In order to save the last piece of his soul, the sky-swallowing wolf would swallow any future humiliation it might face.

So the wolf let out another small woof to show that it was harmless.

Who could've imagined… That the third ranking Demon King of the Demon Realm was now so hard-pressed to the point that it had to rely on acting like a dumbass in order to save its life's and prove it was not gonna be a public nuisance.

Xero had never expected that through this method, for the third time in his life, he would be confronted with the existence that was like a shadow over him.

The delinquent who had screwed up his grand plan for three hundred years worth of crispy noodles had appeared before his eyes once again, and for the sake of holding on to what little life it had left, it was actually pretending to be a pet, submitting itself to the whims of others.

He wanted to ask this demon king whether it had any integrity left.

But seeing its wretched appearance, Xero didn't have the heart to actually attack it.

Even though all that remained of this third-ranked demon was its spirit, it was still a ferocious one in the eyes of many.

But this sky-swallowing wolf was smart. With just one woof — its reputation was instantly wiped clean.

"It seems Student Xero and sky-swallowing wolf are fated to encounter each other."

Twenty seconds after the sky-swallowing toad had appeared, Teacher Hōtaru was still bewildered.

She knew very well that with her current strength, it was unlikely that she would have been able to deal with this demon. But when it woofed, it completely set her mind at ease.

It turned out this wretched creature was too weak to even utter a word!

… Then what the hell is she frightened about?

"Don't worry. This demon is already too weak to fight back, I'll just seal it."

Upon saying that, Teacher Pan used Eternal Guidance to swiftly cease the sky-swallowing wolf's remaining spirit with one hand, the ghost of the skeleton dog with the other, she prepared to fuse them both.

Xero knew well what the outcome would be when an imperial-ranked monster was fused with a low-ranked creature.

The demon king's substantial spirit energy would be confined, and on the other hand, it could be seen to give the poor puppy that had been eaten after its death some closure.

Of course, the sky-swallowing wolf knew what it meant to be fused with the skeleton dog — its spirit energy would be massively reduced and it would completely become a dog…

Should I go along with your act of complete ignorance, or should I act like everyone's favorite wolf?

In that moment, Xero could completely hear the despair in the wolf's heart.

Teacher Hōtaru was indeed worthy of her deserved reputation, and that had been being one of the vanguard teachers for No. 70 High School for ages. With smooth and natural skill, almost without pause, she fused the spirits together.

"Everyone, I have subdued the demon. How unexpected, though its spirit is sealed, a small part of its soul had broken off. But it's alright now, it has been confined into a physical body, so it can only use a small amount of its spirit energy." Pleased, Teacher Hōtaru said, "Students, just take it as our class's mascot."

In a halo burst of light, a brand new puppy with dark, gradient blue fur appeared before everyone.

"Ah, it's a Japanese shiba inu!"

Peony Aoi's heart blossomed instantly, overflowed.

"But this dog's color is strange, why's it dark?"

"Probably because it was fused with the sky-swallowing wolf," Master of Rubie said, pushing his glasses up, and sighed. "We judge everything by appearance and looks nowadays. If you're good-looking, who's gonna care about the color of your hair?"

Super Ryo picked up the Shiba Inu in delight, and squeezed its fat cheeks. "Should we give him a name? How about… Daft Wolf?"

Xero: "…"

Daft Wolf: "…"

"Hey, why's it so quiet? Bro, you should, 'woof woof' now, not the opposite. You're a dog now, not a wolf."

Daft Wolf: "…"

It glanced silently to Xero nearby, who had an indifferent look on his face.

Only now, did Daft Wolf realize, the most miserable thing in his life wasn't that he encountered Xero three times, but that though it was very pissed, in front of Xero, it had to keep smiling…
