Chapter 18 - Chapter 18: A Sparring Invitation from Namikaze Minato

"Chōmei, my good days are coming to an end..."

Walking through the village, Gekko Chizan felt a bit helpless.

With Flying Thunder God now exposed, along with his Transparent Release... sigh, there's no way to keep it hidden anymore.

Luckily, he still had the Multi Shadow Clone Jutsu and the Eight Gates.

Tch, you can never have too many trump cards. After all, this world chews people up and spits out their bones.

"Tsk, don't think I don't know."

"You're my jinchūriki now. I know exactly how strong you are."

"From what I can tell, if you went all out, most jōnin wouldn't stand a chance against you. Even that big guy from Kumogakure we ran into the other day wouldn't be your match."

"And that's without even using my power. If you borrowed my strength, even an average Kage would struggle to deal with you."

Chōmei let out all his complaints in one breath. His partner was way too timid—clearly strong, yet acting so cowardly.

Gekko Chizan shot back without mercy.

"You don't get it. Having forbidden techniques is one thing, but I need the capacity to actually use them."

"Come on, I'm only 14. How much chakra do you think this frail body of mine can produce?"

"Just look at the Third Raikage's son—his arms are thicker than my waist. And I'm supposed to fight that? Yeah, right."

Chōmei: ...You talk more, so you must be right.

...

Back home, seeing his younger brother, Gekko Chizan smiled. No matter what, his family was what really mattered.

"Sayo-san, I'm back!"

"Here, the reward from this mission."

Seeing the stack of cash in Gekko Chizan's hand, Sayo looked a bit dazed.

"How much is that?"

"I did the math—about 115,000 ryō."

In truth, the mission didn't pay nearly that much. Two people had died, and most of the money went to their death benefits.

Chizan and Yamanaka Heichi each got 10,000 ryō. The rest? He looted it off the bodies of those Kumogakure shinobi.

Gotta admit, these guys doing missions in the Land of Hot Water were loaded.

"That much? What kind of mission was it?"

"B-rank? A-rank?"

Rank-wise, Gekko Chizan thought for a moment. Considering he faced off against the Raikage's son, this was probably above a standard A-rank mission.

That was, after all, the strongest of Kumogakure's younger generation.

"Probably A-rank. It was assigned directly by the Hokage. Nothing I could do about it."

"Didn't even have time to let you know."

Seeing Gekko Chizan's travel-worn appearance, Sayo swallowed the words she was about to say.

"Haha, I'm fine. See? I made it back alive, didn't I?"

"And this time, I got promoted to jōnin."

"From now on, I'll be walking with a little more swagger around the village!"

Jōnin were the backbone of any shinobi village. Their strength and numbers largely determined a village's overall power.

Konoha maintained its position as the strongest of the Five Great Shinobi Villages not just through a steady stream of geniuses—but also due to the sheer number of jōnin it had.

"Jōnin, huh... Just be careful during missions from now on. If things go bad, just run."

"Running away is better than dying out there."

Perhaps remembering her lost loved ones, Sayo's expression dimmed.

As a survivor of war, she knew better than anyone how cruel it could be.

"Don't worry. I might not be good at fighting, but when it comes to running away, I'm definitely one of the best in Konoha."

Hearing that, Chōmei couldn't help but spit in his heart.

Of course, only in his inner world.

...

Over the next few days, Gekko Chizan registered his new jōnin status. He barely had time to enjoy it when—

He got stopped.

"Come on, Minato, why are you so set on sparring with me?"

"Hahaha, I heard from our teacher! Can't believe it, Chizan—you've mastered the Flying Thunder God Technique too!"

Yup. He'd been found by Namikaze Minato, who was now insisting on sparring.

As soon as he heard that, Gekko Chizan understood everything.

That crafty old man, the Third Hokage, must've specifically told Jiraiya about his Flying Thunder God skill—and Jiraiya, in turn, told Minato.

Now they were using Minato to test him.

Can't deny it—these higher-ups are all schemers!

And now Minato showed up personally. What could he do?

He and Minato were in the same cohort, and he knew Minato's personality well. Now he understood why Naruto was so headstrong—

Because his dad was the same way. Once Minato set his mind to something, even a herd of bulls couldn't drag him off it.

"Yeah, yeah, I know the Flying Thunder God. But Minato, don't you already know it too?"

"It's not that special."

The moment Gekko Chizan admitted it, Minato's eyes lit up.

"Chizan-kun, let's have a sparring match!"

"Let's compete with the Flying Thunder God!"

Great. Just what he didn't want. A spar? Like hell.

With Minato's reflexes, even that Raikage's son was no match.

No way was he doing this.

"Um, Minato, I only just got the hang of the technique. Still super clumsy with it."

"How about we skip the sparring and just exchange notes instead, yeah?"

As he spoke, Gekko Chizan pulled out a kunai engraved with his formula.

Minato smiled the moment he saw the formula, then pulled a kunai from behind his back.

Unlike an ordinary kunai, Minato's had a unique design—clearly custom-made.

"This is my specially crafted ninja blade and formula. Pretty cool, huh?"

"The Blade of Love and Ninja... Minato, your taste is still as... sigh..."

Minato just laughed, but his gaze soon landed on Chizan's kunai.

And in the next second—he froze.

What the hell was that?

Did your dad show up???

Why is Chizan-kun using that kind of phrase for a technique?

This is way too...v

"Minato, did you know there's another use for the Flying Thunder God?"

That question snapped Minato out of his dumbfounded state.

"You mean the Flying Thunder God Mutually Instantaneous Revolving Technique?"

His eyes lit up again. He'd always known about that technique.

But since he was the only one who could use Flying Thunder God, there had never been anyone to link with.

"Hehe, that's the one."

"We each place a formula on ourselves, then we can use the Flying Thunder God Technique to switch places instantly."

"What an incredible Ninjutsu, right?"

Gekko Chizan was clearly hamming it up.

The Mutual Teleportation Rotation really was powerful, but there was one catch—

Both users had to be normal people.

If one of them wasn't, then this technique could get real interesting.
