Jonathan turned serious and began to talk to Martin about him growing up and how he grew up on the Harrison farm, and he wanted to know if it was shut down. Martin looked at Jonathan curiously. "Why would they have shut down an independent ranch like Harrison? It wasn't corporate."
Jonathan started to tell his story with a heavy voice. "We were raised in a rookery setting and there were 30 to 35 of us boys in each pod. As we got close to our 16th birthday, they began to come in and examine us once a week. They were taking temperatures, they were taking measurements, and sometimes checking our back ports. They would take a probe and insert it into us and see how far it would go until we became so uncomfortable that we couldn't handle it. As we hit the mark on the probe, one by one boys were taken out. After three days, they would return—they were always swollen in their back port, they walked funny, and they complained that their insides felt weird."
