Finn and Martha, with heavy crowbars and a shared determination, worked for an hour, their grunts echoing in the cramped root cellar as they chipped away at the mortar and prised the heavy stone slab ajar. A wave of incredibly pure, potent Aether washed over them, so intense it made Kenji gasp and Lyra glow like a miniature sun. But mixed with it was the chilling, cloying taint of the Blight, and something else… the faint, almost imperceptible thrum of Kenji's "structured Aetheric pattern."
The opening was just wide enough for one person to squeeze through. Kenji, despite his still-recovering Aether, knew he had to be the one. His SAI was their only tool to understand what lay beyond. Lyra, despite his protests, insisted on accompanying him.

He squeezed through the opening into a short, narrow passage that sloped downwards. The air was cool and thrummed with power. At the end of the passage, a soft, pulsating light emanated from a larger cavern. This was the Heartstone's antechamber.
As they entered, Kenji's breath caught. The cavern was small, roughly circular. In its center, on a natural rock pedestal, pulsed a crystal the size of a human heart. It glowed with a soft, warm, white light, the source of the valley's vitality. This was the Heartstone of Havenwood.
But something was terribly wrong.
Dark, vein-like tendrils of Blighted Aether, like corrupted roots, snaked across the cavern floor and walls, all converging on the pedestal. They weren't touching the Heartstone itself yet, but they were close, pulsing with a malevolent energy. And in the center of the cavern, directly beneath the Heartstone, almost invisible to the naked eye but screaming on Kenji's Aetheric Resonance Scan, was the source of the structured pattern.
It wasn't a beacon or a virus left by the Brood Mother.
It was a device.
Or rather, the remnants of one. A metallic, crystalline latticework, partially shattered and fused with the rock, pulsed with a faint, sickly green light. It was clearly ancient, its design a bizarre fusion of what Kenji could only describe as organic technology and arcane runes. Lines of corrupted Aether flowed from this device towards the Heartstone, not the other way around.

"Lyra..." Kenji whispered, "that thing... it's making the Blight here. Or amplifying it."
Before Lyra could respond, a section of the device flared with a brighter, angrier green light. The Blighted tendrils pulsed, and a new, smaller Skitterer, still glistening and unformed, began to pull itself free from a pulsating sac of Blight Aether connected to the ancient machine.
This wasn't just a defense mission anymore. They were standing in the Blight's own local server room, its birthing chamber, and it was still online. The plot had just taken a terrifying, system-crashing twist.
