I find myself leaning my back against Rexy's neck while sitting on the ground reading a book, the Yankee in King Arthur's court, to be specific, Little One's head on my lap while we watch over Jessica carrying out her vetly duties for a sick trike.
Her sister Sarah, a behavioralist, is currently working with a team of behaviorists and animal neurosurgeons to map out brain wave patterns and animal calls much like Maya does in Camp Cretaceous, as it is my plan to use those calls to attract the dinosaurs to guest viewing areas.
Though familiarizing the adolescent herbivores with humans through Jurassic Zoo…when it's time to rotate them to the park they should come to the humans of their own volition, hopefully they also learn humans are weak and to be gentle with them as well but that's probably hoping for too much.
Rexy lets out a soft snort and moves her neck slightly as she scents the air, she sends me a primal sense of fear, and impressions of hard rain.
"What is it girl, you're worried about a bad storm?" I ask Rexy and though she doesn't really understand my question she understands I want confirmation and send me more impressions of heavy rain, suddenly my walkie blares to life, "Sir I'm getting reports from the science teams across the island all the animals are starting to show signs of unease…hold on I'm getting an emergency message from the weather service. Sir a Hurricane is heading straight for the archipelago."
"Get the science teams to the emergency shelters, and initiate a full lockdown of the island." I say back into my walkie and pat Little One's neck while mentally asking her to get up, the little stinker just nuzzles the side of her snout against my thigh and snuggles in…seemingly lacking Rexy's instincts of natural danger.
"Yes, Sir…should I send a retrieval unit for you and Doctor Harding?"
"No, I've got Rexy."
"Of course Sir, over and out." My radio falls back to silence and I gently remove my way too big to be a lap raptor, off of my lap and stand up.
Moving over to Jessica while Little One whines out betrayed clicks and Rexy almost makes a sound like she's amused by Little One's antics, I rest my right hand on Jessica's left shoulder making her flinch and whip her head around to face me, her eyes take over my naked torso before returning to her operation.
"I'm not leaving until this little trike is up and moving again." Jessica snarks which makes me smile and chuckle, "Oh I know you're not going to leave your patient Jess, I just wanted to reassure you that I am staying here with you." I say to the young woman who looks like Alexandra Daddarrio but with brown hair and tanned skin.
"Ohh-th-thanks." Jessica stutters slightly and I can tell that she was not expecting me to say that.
"Sure thing, we made a deal when you came to work for me, I look after you, you look after my animals…with that being said, what can I do to help you to speed up this operation without putting this sweet girl at greater risk?"
"Uhh, put your hands here." Jessica directs me and I watch/feel my hands becoming coated in hot sticky warm dino blood as I help close a wound.
Soon the wind is whipping, the skies growing an angry dark, I can see the nervousness bleeding into Jessica as her hands start to become unsteady as she cuts away bits of flesh to more easily remove a piece of downed metal fence from the young trike.
"Jessica, look at me." The young woman turns her head to face big blue eyes filled with worry, for me the trike and herself, as the first few drops start to come down.
"Don't panic, everything is gonna be alright, Rexy, Little One and I are going to keep you safe, this storm isn't going to turn out like that one." I try to reassure the young woman, reminding her that this isn't like the storm that led to her father being eaten by Dilopharus, or being locked in a room with a bunch of hatchling dinosaurs.
A resolve settles over her and she humphs, "As if I need you to protect me." She says that but the tension melts away from her shoulders and she returns to the operation displaying much more of her advanced skills than before.
"I know you don't…you're amazing Jessica." I smile and say reassuringly.
'Stop flirting, you man whore!' I tell myself but I feel a certain pull towards Jessica Harding. She loves these animals like I do, she's not afraid to come to the island because of one bad experience.
I watch as Jessica tries to pull the piece of metal free but she just doesn't have the arm strength to do it, "Switch places with me." I tell her quickly and she does without question showing how much she truly trusts me which honestly feels both good and bad because what if I fuck up and make what's wrong with this sweet girl worse and have to show off my powers and undermine Jessica's hard earned skills and knowledge.
'Would save me a fortune on medications, veterinary supplies and equipment…not to mention Jessica's and the other Veterinarians's salaries, if I did use my healing abilities to take care of the animals…' wrapping my hand around the sharp piece of steel I pull it straight out in one slow movement, and am rewarded with a spray of blood on my face.
"Damn, it was on an artery!" Jessica shouts and grabs a hot iron and goes to cauterize the area.
"Don't bother, we don't have time." I shout as Rexy catches a branch in her mouth that was flying through the air towards us.
"What do you mean, She'll di-oh my god, how are you doing this?" Jessica goes from shouting to be heard over the storm brought by the Hurricane, to a soft gasp.
The little trike rolls over onto its feet and runs off to rejoin its herd, looking at a cement barrier wall I picture a doorway as the torrential downpour starts, while picking up Jessica and throwing her over my shoulder and grabbing her medical bag, "Go girls get inside!" I holler to my big babies and follow them inside into the dry forest.
Getting inside I set Jessica down and she looks so sad, hair completely flattened, clothes drenched, and she's staring at me, like I'm some alien thing…
"Come on into the house, I'll get you a towel and some sweats to change into." I say to Jessica who a little reluctantly follows me into the Loft under the very watchful gazes of my big girls.
Walking up the stairs to the second level going into the bathroom grabbing out a big fluffy towel, then to the dresser I grab out a pair of sweats with drawstring tensioners at the waist and ankles, before grabbing out a hooded sweatshirt.
Walking downstairs, finding Jessica timidly standing by the bay door looking like a drowned rat standing in a puddle of water, with Rexy behind her, and Little One making happy chirping sounds as she rolls around on the massive dino bed next to the door.
Walking over to the young woman with a smile on my face here you go, feel free to get changed and when you're done I'll hang up those wet clothes to dry.
"Th-thanks Alec…so… how were you able to do what you did for that, adolescent Triceratops?"
"That's for me to know." I joke softly and Jessica gives me a mixture of a pitiful glare point as she continues to drip all over my floor.
"But now that you've seen it you'll have to sign the same contract as the ACU personnel...but that can wait till just before we leave, you should get dried off and changed before you catch a cold." I say to her as I make my way back upstairs and kick off my sodden jeans and boxers before walking into the bathroom and drying my lower half off and putting on a dry pair of sweats.
'One nice thing about being on the island is shirts and shoes are optional.'
