Before the three of us left the football stadium, I looked back at the massacre I caused. A dark feeling started forming in my heart. I couldn't tell what it was, maybe it was joy. Then as quickly as that feeling rose it seeped back down, replaced by sorrow.
The conflicting feeling confused me. I had no idea why I was feeling like this. It was unconscious.
I shook my head and started walking. The three of us continued to walk. I could hear Penelope trying to talk to Mey.
Then I heard rummaging in the building in front of us. I held up a clenched fist, signaling the two girls to stop talking.
I made my way to the corner of the wall and peeked around it. I saw two angels, each with only 2 wings. It looked like they were scavenging the loot left in the building.
I accidentally kicked a rock and hurriedly pulled myself from the corner. But it was too late. The next thing I knew the two angels were already around the corner with their weapons drawn.
"Who are you?" The one said. He had short wheat blonde, two white wings, a halo, and eyes as sharp as daggers.
"Wait…" The other said, drawn out in a raspy voice, then after a long pause he continued, "That's Kai Mercer, Fate's Chosen One." Then his eyes traced over me and Penelope.
He didn't say anything about Mey, so I turned around to see that Mey wasn't there. Then I felt a hand on my left shoulder and instantly knew it was Mey. I let out a sigh and turned back around to the two angels.
"You know me?" I asked, my eyes narrowing with suspicion.
"There isn't any angel who hasn't heard your name." The second angel said. "Oh where are my manners, my name is Derron, and this over is Gerald." He said bowing. "It's a pleasure to meet you."
I bowed too, confused. "It's a pleasure too meet you too." After I said that, we both stood straight. He looked at me and a smiled. A smile that didn't quite reach his eyes.
"Well, I need to venture forward." I said as I slipped past the two angels.
I continued on with Penelope following me. I couldn't tell if Mey if was following me because she was invisible, but I just hoped she wouldn't start anything with those angels.
I kept sneakily shooting glances over my shoulder, only to see Derron and Gerald following us.
At the next block, I turned left into a big supermarket and hid behind a rack of clothes.
I heard Derron and Gerald's footsteps make their way into the supermarket. I manifested the sword in my hand and waited.
Derron walked past first then Gerald. When Gerald walked past, I crept out from my hiding spot and got behind him. I put the sword to his neck.
"Derron…" Gerald whimpered.
Gerald turned around, a dark gleam in his eyes. Then he said in cold but calm voice, "Let him go."
"Answer my questions and I'll think about it." I copied his tone.
Derron thought for a second, as if Gerald's life meant very little, if nothing at all, to him.
Then he said, losing his cold tone but keeping it calm, "Fine."
"Why were you following us?" I asked.
"We were tasked with being you to the angel realm." He responded fast.
"Why exactly?" I asked in response.
"We don't know, we assume it's because you were chosen by fate." He took more time to respond, as if choosing his words.
"That's stupid. You do something even though you don't know why?" I said.
"That's ironic coming from you. Fate's Chosen, lecturing me about doing something even though I don't know the reason." He let out a loud laugh.
"I'm not doing what fate has in store with me." I said simply, before continuing, "I'm simply living my life."
He laughed even more. "You don't understand, Kai Mercer, your life is the fate of this world."
Out of anger, I slashed Gerald's neck.
Then said coldly, "You know nothing about me."
"I know too much about you, Kai Mercer. You've tried to end this war over and over again, but each time you fail, you lose all your memories and restart. I know all about your little girlfriend too, Lyra."
I got even angrier, then that anger turned into curiosity. "Tell me everything you know."
"Why would I do that after you…" He pointed at the body of Gerald, "did that?"
"If you don't, I'll do the same thing to you." I said my gaze and voice icy.
Darron let out a long sigh before saying, "No." Then he just disappeared before my mind could comprehend anything.
Then he reappeared behind me. Before I could turn around, I was sent flying across the store. I went through shelves and even through a wall.
After my fight with the bandits, I thought I could take on anyone. Now I realized they were only humans, limited by human potential, just like me. There is no way I can beat an angel.
I thought this was where I died and the world reset… yet again, but the second attack didn't come.
I looked up and saw Mey behind Gerald, a blade pierced his chest.
I completely forgot Mey was here. That invisibility thing is pretty handy.
I tried to get up, but I was sore all over my body. I had to have a couple broken bones, some internal bleeding, and a punctured lung.
The pain slowly started fading, I felt everything start healing. It was a weird feeling that I had no idea how to describe. It was slow and painful but after about thirty minutes everything was healed.
I slowly got up, putting pressure on my recently broken legs, but everything felt fine.
I limped my way over to Mey, "That invisibility skill is pretty handy, isn't it?"
She smiled, "I'm glad you're ok, Kai."
Penelope also walked up to us and also voiced her concern, "Yeah… but… are you sure you're fine."
"We should get out of here." Mey said hurriedly, "More angels will come."
"Yeah." I responded simply.
We made our way out of the store and started walking down the street again.
I decided to slow down my pace to match Mey's to ask her a question.
"You seem to know a lot about me," I paused then continued, "Do you know why I healed back there?"
She looked at me with unreadable expression, "It's not time for you to know, you'll figure that out sometime in the future." Her voice was emotionless.
"I should've expected that answer, that's the answer I always get." I let out a sigh and picked up my pace, leaving Mey behind me.
We eventually made it to a church, a different one than the one we saw on the first day in the city.
Mey's voice sounded from behind me, "This church, does it bring back any memories?"
Penelope turned around and looked at Mey, then at me, then she asked, "Memories?"
"I can't say that it does." I said focusing inward on my mind.
"Go inside, that might change something in your mind." Mey said.
"Alright." I said as I started walking up the stairs to the church.
Once I got inside, something drew my attention to the alter at the podium.
I made my way up to the alter and stared at it. There was a bit of water in the alter, using it as a mirror, I looked at myself. Something I haven't done since I was brought back to life? I couldn't help it but the end of my thought drifted into a question.
Anyway, when I looked into the alter, I saw a boy with black hair on the left side of his head, white hair on the right side of his head, a red left eye, and a golden right eye. He had snow white skin, the hair framed his sharp jaw.
I recoiled back a little back. That's not at all what I looked like before I died.
I went back to look at myself, hoping something had changed, hoping I looked like myself again, but my hopes were shattered. The same piercing red and gold eyes were staring back at me.
Something came over me. Something inside me manifested the katana. Then my other hand moved against my will. Then I slashed my wrist.
Penelope looked horrified, but Mey was as calm as ever, as if she expected this. She definitely knew more about me than she was letting on. I wonder how?
Blood dripped into the alter. The blood pushed aside the water filling the empty spot, as if the water didn't want to touch my blood.
The blood hit the alter. As soon the blood touched the alter a calm voice boomed throughout the chapel.
"My lord, you have returned."
