Chapter 44 - Chapter 44: Plan to Break into the Marine Base

"With your strength, Captain Ace, dealing with an average Vice Admiral shouldn't be a problem," Law said, hesitating slightly. "But this Vice Admiral is from the same generation as Admiral Akainu... and they're closely connected. If we raid his base, we might earn Akainu's wrath."

"Akainu, huh?" Upon hearing that name, Ace's expression darkened. A flicker of murderous intent passed through his eyes, but he smiled and said calmly, "I'm already being hunted by an Admiral. Offending another one won't make a difference."

"In that case, there's no issue," Law nodded, before asking, "So, Captain Ace, do you have a plan to infiltrate this Marine base and retrieve the Log Pose to the Sabaody Archipelago?"

"Plan?" Ace blinked, then laughed. "Haha! Of course I have a plan."

Ace raised a fist confidently. "The plan is simple—charge in, grab the Log Pose to Sabaody, and get out!"

"..." Law facepalmed and sighed. Why did I agree to follow this guy again? Is it too late to quit now?

"Captain Ace, you should at least hear my plan," Law insisted, calming himself. He spread out a map of the A3 Marine Base and pointed out key details. "The A3 base is mid-sized, with around a thousand Marines stationed there. Thirteen turrets line the front. A direct assault will result in heavy shelling—we shouldn't attack head-on. I suggest we sneak in from the northern side..."

"Wait!" Ace interrupted, grinning. "Why sneak in? Wouldn't storming the front gate be easier? I'm not afraid of a little bombardment."

"..." Law fell silent, suddenly remembering—his captain was a Logia-type Devil Fruit user. Normal cannon fire couldn't harm him.

Ace continued, "And we're not here to fight, just to steal a Log Pose. You don't need to come. I'll go in alone, grab it, and dash out. Simple."

Law hesitated, but then said, "Your idea might work, but going in alone is still risky. I'll go with you. My abilities will help us locate the Log Pose and escape quickly."

"Alright, that settles it," Ace agreed. "Once we reach Essalin Island tomorrow, we'll head straight for the Marine base and steal the Log Pose."

---

The next evening, the Heart Pirates' ship arrived at Essalin Island, a large island with a Marine base. Pirate ships couldn't dock openly at the island's port, so Law's crew moored their ship covertly along the island's northern coast.

Their objective was clear—steal the Log Pose from the Marine base. Only Ace and Law went ashore, while the rest of the Heart Pirates remained on the ship.

The two stood near the A3 Marine Base, which was heavily guarded.

"Captain Ace... are you seriously just going to charge in?" Law asked hesitantly.

Ace grinned and patted Law's shoulder. His lower body began turning into flames as he said, "Get ready. We're going in."

"Wait, wait—!" Before Law could object, Ace grabbed him and rocketed through the air toward the front gate.

"Enemy attack! Enemy attack!"

The base alarm blared as the Marines spotted the incoming intruders. But Ace's speed was too fast for them to react—he flew past the defenses straight into the base.

"There—see that building? That's likely the warehouse. The Log Pose should be stored there," Law pointed from above.

"Got it!" Ace nodded, accelerating. He flew straight at the structure, only to find a reinforced steel door blocking their entry.

"Fire Fist!"

Boom!

Ace's flaming punch obliterated the door.

Just as Law suspected, the structure was a supply warehouse storing all kinds of logistical equipment.

"Bang! Bang! Bang!"

"The intruders are at the warehouse—mobilize all units!"

Marines scrambled toward the destroyed entrance.

"You search for the Log Pose. Leave the rest to me," Ace said confidently, stepping into the open.

Law didn't argue. He slipped inside the warehouse to search for the Log Pose.

Soon, a squad of Marines arrived. One officer spotted Ace standing at the shattered entrance and shouted, "That's the intruder! Apprehend him!"

"Yes, sir!"

The Marines charged forward.

"Flame Wall!"

Ace unleashed a torrent of fire, surrounding himself with a blazing barrier and cutting off the Marines.

"Sorry," he smiled through the flames, "I'm not done here yet."

"A Logia user!"

"He's... he's from the Grand Line's first half, right? How is someone like him attacking our base?!"

The Marines were visibly shaken. To many of them, Logia users were virtually untouchable—invincible.

Suddenly—

"Right Angle Slash!"

A powerful diagonal strike cleaved through the fire wall, creating an opening.

"A real man fights head-on!" declared a zombie-like man wielding a long blade. "I can't stand cowardly swordsmanship! Marines! Follow me—Logia users aren't unbeatable!"

With that, he charged.

"Oh?" Ace looked at him with interest, tipping his hat. "Finally, someone with some guts."
