Chapter 34 - Dear Diary/Part 1

(Note: Punctuation and capitalization have been added for readability in English. The style reflects a child's perspective and evolving maturity over the years.)

My name is Filmeer Reed. I am currently 10 years old. I live in my family's beautiful home with my mom, dad, and older brother. Even though I'm part of the family, I was born different from them. My mom told me I was born with a rare disease – I don't remember the name, honestly – but my skin can't tolerate sunlight. Burns appear on it immediately upon contact with the sun. That's why all the windows in the house are closed during the day, to avoid anything happening to me. Additionally, my body can't produce blood on its own. So if I lose some blood, I have to get blood from someone else. That's why I go to the hospital many times. So, I consider myself a vampire. It's true I look like my grandfather because of my wrinkles, but that doesn't bother me.

I'm not allowed to go out during the day unless it's something essential. Even if I go out, I have to wear lots of clothes and protective glasses to shield my body from the sun. This is bad for me because kids usually play during the day, and I'm only allowed out at night. But it's okay, I have my brother to play with me. He's the best brother and the best friend I have.

Today passed normally. I woke up, ate breakfast, and started doing the homework my mom gave me. Then I went to play. I had lunch and waited until night came. Then I started playing outside with my brother until mom called us in for dinner. And now I'm going to sleep.

Hello again, my diary. The morning passed normally like almost every day, so I won't repeat writing it. But something different happened at night while playing with my brother. We found a group of kids playing in front of our house. I was happy, and my brother and I ran to play with them. They were nice and welcomed us to play. Some of them were surprised by my appearance and asked me why I look like this. I didn't know how to answer them, but my brother explained my condition and that I have a rare disease. After he said that, I noticed they started looking at me with amazement, and one of the kids said to me, "So you're a vampire?! That's amazing!!" I was surprised by his words and told him I don't suck blood, but he insisted. Oh, and some of the kids looked at me with strange looks. Did I say something wrong? Or is there something on my face? I don't know, but they let me play with them until I went home as usual. The good thing is they'll come again tomorrow to play. I can't wait to play with them again.

Finally, night came, and I rushed outside. Luckily, I found them waiting for me outside, and with them was another group of kids. As soon as they saw me, one of the kids pointed at me, and they all started running towards me. At first, I felt uncomfortable, but when they reached me, they started looking at me in astonishment, as if I were famous. That made me feel wonderful. They started asking me many questions like, "Can't you go out during the day?" or "Can you drink blood?" I answered them honestly, which only increased their admiration for me. Anyway, I played many games with them and had a really fun time.

Oh shoot, I haven't written anything for a week! I completely forgot about the diary. Anyway, my new friends are finally going to visit me! They said they would come with 4 others this morning. It's 3:35 AM – the time is close. I'm really excited. I have so many things I want to do with them. Oh!! They're here!! I didn't expect them to come early! This is really awesome!!!

This is really painful. Every inch of my face hurts badly. All because of those kids. Damn them. I invited them to my house as friends to play and have fun. In the middle of playing, they asked me to close my eyes. I thought it would be a gift, but they opened the windows and let the sunlight into the room. My skin immediately started burning upon contact with the sun, causing me unbearable pain. I started screaming with all my might from the pain while they just watched me with fearful, tense looks, doing nothing. Until my older brother came, quickly took me out of the room, and gave me to my parents, who called an ambulance. Now I've been sitting in the hospital for 3 days. My whole face is covered in bandages, and my hands too. That makes writing really difficult. I also heard that my brother beat up the kids who did that to me. That made me feel a little better. Really, my brother is the best person I've ever known.

A week has passed since I left the hospital, and everything has almost returned to normal. But I don't play with anyone except my brother anymore, and those kids never came to play here again. That's not a problem. Other kids are mean. All I need is my brother. Anyway, something strange happened today. I saw my parents talking to each other in the kitchen, but that's not the strange part. The strange part is their faces were unusually sad, and they were shouting at each other sometimes. I don't know what's happening, but I hope everything is okay.

What's happening?! My dad suddenly started taking my things and some stuff from the house. I heard he's going to sell them, but why? Doesn't he have enough money already?! I even started noticing my mom crying sometimes when we're not around. This worries me a bit. Additionally, I heard my dad talking on the phone with someone, and he said things like "the debts are heavy" and "this will cause problems for the family." I don't know what these debts are, but it seems they will cause us a lot of trouble.

A really weird day. I think I really am a vampire after all. Well, I wasn't paying enough attention and fell down the stairs, cutting a small part of my chin. So I kept bleeding way more than usual. Luckily, my dad stopped the bleeding. I noticed my dad, unlike usual, didn't take me to the hospital. He just stood there, worried about something. There must be something wrong because of those debts. But the strangest thing happened afterward: my dad brought me a cup full of blood and told me to drink it. I hesitated at first, but he forced me to in the end. It didn't taste bad, actually. It was a bit salty and metallic. I don't know, I can't describe it. Anyway, my dad told me we're moving houses tomorrow. Weird. What's causing all these things they're doing?

Oh, my diary! I finally found you! It's been 4 years since we changed houses. I dropped the diary while carrying some boxes and couldn't retrieve it, unfortunately, because of the distance between the new house and this one. Anyway, I think I'll write a summary of these 4 years. Well, the new house isn't really new; it's a bit old and way too small. It only has one room, a kitchen, and a bathroom. Plus, the area is almost deserted; we don't have any neighbors or shops outside. And I think I finally understood the reason for all this. Apparently, my dad was scammed badly by someone he trusted. Because of that, debts piled up on him enormously, and he was forced to sell all his possessions and move to this simple house to be able to pay off the remaining debts. This is really sad how things turned out like this. Of course, my brother and I didn't just sit around doing nothing. There were some apple trees near the house, belonging to a farmer, but we didn't care. We would go there when the farmer wasn't around, steal some apples, run away quickly, and then sell them to get some money to give to dad. They always told me not to tire myself, but that was the least I could do for them. Oh, I almost forgot. I discovered something new. Not really new, I discovered it a year ago. It's that I can drink animal blood to compensate for any serious blood loss I might experience. That's great! Even my mom and dad thought it was good, so they won't have to give me their blood anymore if I have a serious shortage. Anyway, I heard today that dad has finally gotten rid of his debts. That's truly wonderful. As for how I got my diary back: my brother and I took a trip back to our old house. It took us two hours of walking, but we finally arrived. The house was as it was; not much had changed except it had gotten dirtier. My brother headed to the door and started opening it using something he didn't tell me about. The important thing is we broke in. The smell of dust was everywhere, and the place was completely empty. I felt like the old atmosphere it had was completely gone. I went to the kitchen, and all I could think about were old memories of when my mom used to make me pancakes while I helped her... especially her smile full of happiness that I hadn't seen in a long time... My brother called me afterward to our room upstairs. It was full of dust and some insects. Its walls were in much worse condition. My brother put his arm around my shoulder then and gave me something. I looked at what he was holding and was surprised to see it was my old diary! The amount of happiness I felt then is indescribable. I hugged my brother so tightly I felt like I might break his bones. And here I am writing in it, still sitting on the floor inside the house. My brother asked me a little while ago why I'm so attached to this diary. His question really made me think. Why do I love this thing so much even though I haven't written much in it? But after thinking for a while, I think I know the reason. After my brother, this notebook is the only remaining keepsake I have of my childhood and my happy days. Holding it makes me feel like I've gone back in time 4 years, which makes me as happy as I was then. I told my brother my view, and he said it seemed logical. Anyway, we have to go back before nightfall; the sun has started to set.

A beautiful day. I woke up as usual. Brushed my teeth. Went to have breakfast. And there, for the first time in 4 years, I saw my mom smiling a happy smile. Something good must have happened. After we finished breakfast, Dad gathered us around to tell us something. He got a good job in the city, and they would provide a house for us there for free! It was the best news the family had heard in a long time. And even better, my 15th birthday is in two weeks! How awesome is thaaaaaat!!!! My brother and I went to the apple orchard, but it seems all the apples are unripe, so we'll turn back to play outside. I returned home and found Mom and Dad watching the news on TV as usual. My brother and I sat with them since we had nothing else to do. And I heard the strangest thing in my life. The news anchor mentioned that strange creatures suddenly appeared on the Orik continent. Within just one month, they completely occupied the continent, and within only 10 years, they occupied the Afka and Arif continents. The spread of these creatures is so rapid it's uncontrollable. That prompted all the northern nations to combine their forces in an attempt to suppress the spread of these creatures. Therefore, be cautious if you find anything strange nearby, like non-human creatures or suspicious-looking humans. Please call the number on your screen. I started feeling a little worried after seeing this. Even my parents and brother looked tense too.

It's 5 PM, and I've started hearing strange noises outside. My whole family woke up because of these noises, so we went out to check the situation outside. To our surprise, there were dozens... no, hundreds of tanks lined up along the road. And lots of vehicles full of soldiers heading towards some place. The sight was truly amazing; it was the first time I'd seen a tank in real life. Despite that, worry and tension were clear on my parents' faces. Anyway, we went back inside and went back to sleep.

A week has passed, and it's time for us to go to our new house in the city. We packed our bags, got in the car, and headed towards the house. We finally arrived at our new house! It was a medium-sized house among a group of similar houses nearby. I entered the house and was surprised that the inside was really spacious! It consisted of two rooms, a guest room, plus a small kitchen. We started unpacking our things and arranging the house. Everyone was working hard. Although the work was a bit tough, everyone seemed happy, especially Mom and Dad, whom I hadn't seen that happy in a long time. My brother kept joking with me the whole time. And here I am, ready for the first night in this house.

First day in the house. I don't need to repeat that every time. I did my usual routine. Anyway, Mom asked me to go to the grocery store to buy some things. I put on my usual protective clothes against the sun and left the house. Everything was normal until I entered the store. I started gathering what she asked for normally, but people in the place started giving me strange looks. My hat fell off my head by accident, so I bent down naturally to pick it up. I picked up the hat to find a woman looking at me with looks full of terror. Then she started running out of the store while screaming for help. What caused her strange behavior? I know I'm ugly and a bit different, but not to that degree. After I finished, I went to pay for what I took. The cashier was also looking at me with fear, and that really annoyed me badly. What's wrong with people today? After I paid and went to leave, I was surprised by a group of soldiers waiting for me at the door, pointing their weapons at me! I raised my hands in the air quickly so they wouldn't do anything bad to me. This was the scariest day of my life. One soldier spoke through a megaphone and asked me if I could understand them. I answered yes. Then he continued, asking how I came here. I answered that too. After that, he asked me if I had an ID card. I said yes, took the card out of my pocket, and threw it to him. He looked at it for a while, then came to me and gave it back, apologizing. According to him, he was informed that one of those creatures was in the store, and he thought I was one of them. Anyway, the matter ended well, and I returned home without telling my family anything about what happened and finished my day peacefully. But the thing that annoyed me the most was how people thought I was a monster just because I'm different from them.

A week has passed, and now it's my birthday. Because of my excitement for this day, I woke up early before everyone else. So I'll have to wait until they wake up. Until then, I'll write a little. Well, this week didn't go as I expected. Despite the joy of getting a new house, I noticed all the people here run away from me because of my face. Even the nearby store banned me from entering. So now only my brother does the shopping while I stay home doing my private lessons and sometimes go outside for a walk... To be honest, the people in this place are really bad to me. Every time I go out, the kids always call me "monster." That annoyed me so much I didn't leave the house for 3 days... But I think they'll get used to me over time. It's natural for them to be scared, especially with this news. Anyway, today is my birthday, and I have to enjoy it as much as I can. I'll go to sleep until everyone wakes up to start the party.

What's happening?! I suddenly started hearing the sound of tanks and gunfire!! I don't have a window in my room, so I can't know what's happening outside. I'm currently sitting with my brother in the corner of the room, covered by our blanket. My brother is really terrified, and so am I. I'm worried about Mom and Dad; what if something bad happens to them? A soldier suddenly burst into the room and shouted at us to get out. We all rushed out, running as fast as we could. When I got outside, I saw many tanks and soldiers spread out all along the road. And every second, I heard the sound of cannons firing and gunshots echoing everywhere. I couldn't see what they were fighting because of their large numbers. A soldier grabbed me by the arm and dragged me towards a military truck waiting outside. We got into the truck to find a group of men and children crowded inside, among them my father. We squeezed in with difficulty, and one soldier locked the door behind us. The truck started moving afterward. None of us knew its destination, but it seemed the soldiers knew exactly what they were doing. I looked around and saw looks of fear and worry on everyone's faces, especially the children who wouldn't stop crying. My dad tried to calm me and my brother down, but we knew he was scared himself. I felt suffocated inside the truck. The air was heavy, and the atmosphere was full of tension. My older brother asked Dad where Mom was. He answered that she was in another vehicle and not to worry. The truck kept moving for several hours as the sounds of gunfire gradually faded. The truck finally stopped, and they let us out. After getting out, we found dozens of women outside waiting for their husbands and children to come out of the bus. Among them was my mom, who rushed quickly towards my brother and hugged him tightly, her eyes filled with tears. After the families reunited, the soldiers took us to a simple camp full of military tents. They took us to our small tent, which seemed big enough for 4 people from what I noticed. My brother and I stayed inside the tent with Mom while Dad went out to the soldiers to ask what was happening. My brother is sitting next to Mom right now, and terror is evident on his face. As for Mom, she's not in a better state, but she's trying to hide her worry from us. I don't know how long we've been in the tent. All I hear is the noise of people from the other tents and their children crying. Even Dad hasn't returned to the tent yet... I think I'll go out and see what's happening. I left the tent, and all I saw were soldiers and fathers nearby. But I couldn't see Dad anywhere... Oh, he's just in the next tent! I went to him and found him talking to one of the soldiers. It turned out later that he was an old friend of his. He's very nice. Despite knowing about my illness, he still treats me normally; he even gave me some candy. He just asked me about the book in my hand. I told him it was my diary. He smiled warmly and talked to me for a while about my life without showing any disgust or fear, which comforted me for a while. From what I understood of his words, those creatures have completely taken over the southern continents and have started spreading to our area. They've already taken control of 3 nearby cities at the moment, and the army is trying its best to limit their spread and save our city and 10 other cities. So currently, civilians are being moved to separate camps far away from the cities, up in the mountains, to protect them until we make any progress. After that, I started hearing sounds coming from the sky. I looked up and was shocked to see dozens... hundreds of fighter planes heading towards the city to fight! This sight from above is both terrifying and awesome; it gives hope that these creatures will be destroyed sooner or later.

I returned to the tent because my father ordered me to. I found my brother and mother sitting in silence with gloomy, tense faces. I sat in front of them and told them what my father's friend had told me. After that, I noticed looks of terror and worry increasing on Mom's face. But I tried to ease her worry by telling her about the planes I saw in the sky and that the army would surely defeat them. She looked at me then, with a bit of hope in her face, and said that maybe everything would return to normal. Anyway, they brought us food and water. We ate, and then night came. And now I'm going to sleep for my first night in the camp.

I tried to sleep but couldn't because of the sounds of the soldiers, the planes above us... Damn it! How did my family manage to sleep with all this noise?!... I can't sleep no matter how hard I try... I think I'll go out to get some air until I feel tired and fall asleep. Even though it's night, I'll wear my clothes to hide my face. They might think I'm one of those monsters and I'll end up killed by a soldier. Okay, I sneaked outside without attracting the soldiers' attention and found a wonderful spot. I can see our entire city from here, even though we're hundreds of kilometers away. The view from here is strange and yet wonderful at the same time. I can see the explosions left by the tanks and planes from afar. It's like fireworks... but it's not. It's a sight I never expected to see. It's like I'm witnessing the events of the end of the world. ?? The firing in the city suddenly stopped. That means they stopped shooting... Did they win then?! The fighter planes are also starting to retreat! Yes, they must have won!! Wait a minute... Oh! It's a meteor!! Like a giant star swimming in the sky! I couldn't even move from how beautiful it was! Its mesmerizing beauty makes me happy. I'm witnessing an event that won't repeat anytime soon! But this meteor is a bit strange... It looks like it's heading towards the city.

What's this?! The alarm sirens suddenly went off! And the soldiers started shouting at everyone to get into their tents quickly. I have to get back to the camp quickly! Something must have happened! What is this? The whole place is in chaos. Damn it, I can't find my tent. There's Dad! I found him! I reached him and asked what was happening. He answered that he didn't know. But I suddenly heard a soldier scream, "It's a nuclear strike! Everyone to your tents!!" But before we could move, a tremendous explosion boomed like an earthquake hitting the earth. Everything around us started shaking violently. I fell hard to the ground and looked up in terror towards the city. There, a bright light burst forth as if a sun had descended upon the earth, turning night into day. This was followed by a fierce blast of wind sweeping through the area. Although the explosion was dozens of kilometers away from us, the wind was strong enough to pull me backward. I took one last look towards the city before a soldier rushed over and carried me to safety. The last thing I saw was a giant mushroom-shaped cloud rising above the city, now nothing but ruin and destruction.

The soldier carried me to our small tent and ordered us not to come out... Now neither I nor my family can sleep... I still can't believe what I saw... I think I'll stop writing now. I need some time to process what happened...
