Chapter 38 - Chapter 38:"The Breaking point"

The day had finally arrived.

Prom.

The whole school buzzed with excitement, students rushing around to prepare for the night they'd all been waiting for — but Eliza felt none of it.

Ava had practically dragged her dress shopping a few days earlier. Eliza didn't even argue. She knew Ava wouldn't let her skip prom, no matter how much she wanted to.

The dress hung on her closet door now, glowing softly in the late afternoon light. It was simple — a soft, buttery yellow that complimented her skin. She ran her fingers over the fabric absently, lost in thought.

Every year before this one, she'd made sure her dress was gorgeous. Not for herself, but for him.

For Lucifer.

She wanted him to see her. To notice her.

But this year… she didn't feel like trying.

Her hair fell in loose waves around her shoulders, her makeup light and natural. Pretty — but simple. Nothing like the other years.

She didn't want to look beautiful tonight.

What was the point?

---

When they arrived, the gym was completely transformed. String lights tangled through the ceiling, casting the room in a warm, dreamy glow. Music pulsed, students laughed and danced, and the air practically vibrated with excitement.

Eliza barely noticed any of it.

Her eyes betrayed her almost immediately, scanning the crowd before she could stop them.

And she found him.

Lucifer.

Her heart sank.

He was standing near the dance floor, looking stupidly perfect in a dark suit — tie loose, hair slightly messy, just the way she liked. Lily was hanging off his arm, laughing like she owned him.

It felt like a punch to the gut.

Eliza tore her gaze away, swallowing hard. She didn't want to be here.

"Don't look at him," she muttered to herself.

She didn't notice Ryan until he was right next to her.

"Wow," he said with a crooked grin. "You actually clean up pretty nice."

Eliza forced a laugh. "Yeah, yeah. You too, Ryan."

"Want to dance?" he asked, his tone light, but his eyes softening when he saw her expression.

She hesitated — but nodded. Anything to distract herself.

---

Lucifer spotted her the second she walked in.

She wasn't even trying to look beautiful tonight, and somehow, she still did. The yellow dress made her glow, and her hair fell in those soft waves he always liked.

But she wasn't looking at him.

She wasn't laughing with him.

She wasn't by his side.

She was dancing with Ryan.

His jaw clenched so hard it ached. He barely heard Lily talking beside him. His focus was locked on Eliza. He tried to catch her eyes, but she wouldn't even glance his way.

It was like he didn't exist.

He didn't get it.

Why was she ignoring him?

He tried to approach her once. Then again.

Each time, she drifted further from him, like she didn't even notice.

But he wasn't letting her get away with it. Not tonight.

He couldn't take it anymore.

---

It happened fast.

Eliza barely registered the moment Lucifer reached her. One second, she was talking to Ryan — the next, she was being tugged away, his hand wrapping around her wrist.

"Hey— what the hell?" she sputtered, stumbling after him.

He didn't say a word.

He pulled her through the crowd, past the dance floor, out the gym doors, and into the cool night air.

The music became a dull thud behind them, and the world felt suddenly, painfully quiet.

"Lucifer, what are you—"

"What the hell is wrong with you?" he cut her off, voice sharp and angry.

Eliza stared at him, stunned.

"You're ignoring me!" he snapped, voice rough and raw. "All night. You won't look at me. You won't talk to me. Did I do something? Did I piss you off somehow?"

Eliza's throat tightened. "I'm not—"

"Don't lie to me, Eliza." His voice dropped lower, hurt seeping into it now. "You've been pulling away from me for weeks. And now you won't even look at me? What did I do?"

Her chest ached, the words bubbling up before she could stop them.

"You didn't do anything," she shot back, voice trembling. "That's the problem!"

Lucifer's brows drew together, his voice quieter now. "…What?"

Eliza's vision blurred, her voice shaking.

"You didn't do anything, Lucifer. You never do. You never notice — and I'm so tired of pretending it doesn't hurt."

"Eliza…"

"I can't do this anymore," she whispered, her voice breaking completely now. "I can't keep pretending like I'm okay watching you with her. Like I'm okay being just your best friend when I'm not." Her voice cracked, and the tears came faster now.

"I love you."

Her voice broke, raw and unfiltered. "I love you, Lucifer. I've loved you for years, and it's killing me!"

Lucifer stared at her, stunned — like the ground had been ripped out from under him.

His eyes widened, his mouth slightly open, but no words came out.

The silence was deafening.

Eliza's chest tightened painfully, tears falling freely now.

"Say something." Her voice was barely a whisper, trembling with the weight of everything she'd kept buried for so long.

Lucifer opened his mouth — but nothing came out.

His throat bobbed, his hands clenched into fists at his sides.

He looked at her like he wanted to say something, like the words were on the tip of his tongue.

But they never came.

The night air felt too cold now, too quiet, too heavy.

To be continued....

💬Author's Note:

Eliza finally cracked — years of silent love, of holding back, of pretending… all spilled out like wildfire.

And Lucifer?? My boy just stood there. Like. A. Statue.

I'm not saying I want to punch him… but I want to punch him.

I don't even want to know what happens next. I'm done.

I'm packing my emotional bags and leaving this drama behind.🫡

Goodbye. Don't follow me.
