The Morrison Foundation's monthly board meeting should have been a celebration. We were announcing our first major research grants - ten million dollars to fund breakthrough cancer studies at three leading medical centers. Instead, I sat at the head of our conference table feeling like I was about to preside over my own execution.
"Before we begin today's agenda," I said, trying to project confidence I didn't feel, "I should address the federal investigation that some of you may have heard about. The SEC is reviewing documentation related to the foundation's establishment, but we expect these questions to be resolved quickly."
Dr. Patricia Vaughn from Mount Sinai nodded supportively. "Isabella, we have complete confidence in your integrity and the foundation's legitimacy. Regulatory reviews are common for new charitable organizations."
