Chapter 29 - Chapter 29 : Fate

Clearly, Mr. Ollivander was far more interested in Harry.

Hagrid settled onto a nearby bench, while Dudley stood by, watching with curiosity as Mr. Ollivander measured Harry's body.

Just as at Madam Malkin's Robes for All Occasions, the silver measuring tape Mr. Ollivander produced began measuring Harry automatically—from the length of his dominant arm to his height, and even the distance between his nostrils.

"What's the use of all this data?" Dudley muttered to himself.

Once a wand is chosen, a wizard generally won't replace it unless it's damaged beyond use. This isn't like buying clothes, where you can just get new ones as you grow. So Dudley was genuinely curious about how these measurements helped in choosing a wand. However, he didn't ask, simply accepting it as part of the ritual of buying a wand.

"Mr. Ollivander, what are wand cores usually made of?" Dudley finally asked the question that had been on his mind. He had already seen, with his Spirit Vision, that all wand cores were spiritual substances, but he couldn't discern their exact nature.

"Oh, wands are all made from incredibly powerful magical substances; every single Ollivander wand is unique," Mr. Ollivander replied. "Here, I generally use unicorn hair, phoenix tail feathers, and dragon heartstring as wand cores. Believe me, child, it is the wand that chooses the wizard, not the wizard who chooses the wand. If you use a wand that isn't suitable for you, it will never work well—do you understand?"

Mr. Ollivander explained patiently. It was clear he had a deep understanding of wands and was eager to share their mysteries with those who didn't know.

"Oh, alright, measurements complete."

Mr. Ollivander put away his silver measuring tape, pondered for a moment, then walked to the back of the shop.

"Let me see, Mr. Harry Potter, what kind of wand would suit him? This one seems good."

He pulled out a wand box from among the many, opened it, took out a wand, and handed it to Harry.

"Dragon heartstring, nine inches, quite flexible. Give it a try."

Harry took the wand, uncertain what to do for a moment.

"Give it a wave, child," Mr. Ollivander prompted.

"Oh."

Harry quickly waved it.

"Oh, no, no, no, not this one. This isn't suitable."

Before Harry could react, Mr. Ollivander snatched the wand away and quickly took out another for him to try.

"I didn't expect Harry to be such a picky young man. Haha, Mr. Ollivander will be busy now," Hagrid laughed as he watched.

"You don't know—the pickier the customer, the more excited Mr. Ollivander gets."

Dudley nodded; at that moment, Mr. Ollivander's face was flushed and he looked more energetic than before.

"I wonder what kind of wand I'll get later; I'm actually looking forward to it," Dudley thought to himself.

After trying several wands, Mr. Ollivander suddenly seemed to remember something and pulled out a wand from a dusty corner. His expression became much more solemn, lacking the excitement he had shown before.

"How could I forget this wand? It seems it's all fate's arrangement…" Mr. Ollivander murmured softly. His voice wasn't loud, but in the quiet shop, it was exceptionally clear, and all three of them heard it.

"Come on, try this wand. Holly, phoenix feather, eleven inches, also very flexible."

When Harry grasped the wand, he felt warmth at his fingertips, and a red light appeared like fireworks, illuminating the entire room.

"Excellent, this is the wand—it's wonderful. Is this fate?" Mr. Ollivander said.

"Do you remember what I said before? The scar on your head was caused by another wand I sold, and the phoenix feather used in that wand came from the same phoenix as this one. They are like two brothers, but…" Mr. Ollivander stopped there, not continuing.

Hagrid frowned slightly, apparently knowing something.

"That Lord Voldemort—he really does have some kind of occult connection with Harry…" Dudley thought, pondering the situation.

Previously, he had only thought of Lord Voldemort as an evil wizard, but now, knowing more, he realized Harry really did seem to have some connection with You-Know-Who. In that strange world, there were similar cases, generally referred to as occult connections, which couldn't be explained by common sense. As for what exactly was happening with Harry, Dudley couldn't yet judge.

"I need to find a chance to investigate what's going on with Lord Voldemort," Dudley resolved, keeping the matter in mind.

"All right, Mr. Harry Potter, I believe you will surely achieve great things in the future. Just like that person—what he did was terrible, but it was also a great achievement."

Mr. Ollivander nodded at Harry, then turned his attention to Dudley.

"Oh, Harry's cousin, it's your turn."

Mr. Ollivander couldn't recall Dudley's name for a moment; his attention had been entirely on Harry before.

"Okay."

Dudley didn't mind. He stood up and approached Mr. Ollivander, allowing him to measure his body. Soon, the measurements were complete, and Mr. Ollivander began to ponder a suitable wand for Dudley.

"Here, try this one: ebony, ten inches long, quite stiff."

Dudley took the wand Mr. Ollivander handed him. At that moment, he distinctly felt the spiritual power within him flowing toward the wand in his hand.

"Hm?"

Dudley frowned slightly; he felt the wand in his hand seemed to resist him somewhat. Subconsciously, he used the Arbitrator's authority, attempting to subdue the wand.

"Oh, no, no, no, not this one."

Mr. Ollivander seemed to sense something and quickly snatched the wand from Dudley's hand.

"Uh…"

Dudley's mouth twitched slightly. He felt he should have been able to subdue that wand, and from the brief contact, the wand did not reject spiritual power; on the contrary, it had a good amplifying effect. It condensed the originally dispersed spiritual power and then released it. From that brief contact, Dudley had roughly understood the operating logic of wands.

For him, a wand was not a necessary item; having one could help him better utilize his abilities, but not having one wouldn't affect him. However, for wizards, they couldn't control their spiritual power very well, so they needed the help of a wand to unleash the power of their spells. From this perspective, masters among wizards should also possess the ability to cast magic without a wand, but the magic cast should not be too strong.
