Chapter 43
“Every servant of House Thisse is aware of the Duke and Duchess’s customary evening strolls,” Gilles began. “That night, after an exhausting day of attending to guests, I found myself tossing and turning. It was during these restless hours that I overheard voices. Upon investigation, I discovered the Duke and Duchess having a quarrel.”
“Can you elaborate on the nature of this quarrel?” the judge inquired.
“It was a dispute typical of a married couple, caused by a misunderstanding involving the Marquise.”
A hushed wave of intrigue washed over the courtroom. Gilles Watteau’s words held credibility and weight, for the scandal between the Duke and the Marquise was a well-known secret whispered behind closed doors.
“Please proceed,” prompted the judge.
“However, the argument quickly came to an end.”
“And why was that?”
Gilles paused momentarily, earning him a stern look from the judge.
“Witness, please address the court.”
“Because the Duke kissed the Duchess.”
