The wind danced across the ocean, crisp and gentle. The sound of waves lapping against the hull was constant—almost meditative.
It had been two days since they left Syrup Village, and the world had become nothing but sky and sea.
Kaya sat at the bow of the ship, legs tucked beneath her, a blanket draped over her shoulders. Her golden-blonde hair fluttered behind her like ribbons. She stared out at the endless blue, eyes wide with wonder.
"I never thought the ocean could be so... quiet," she said softly.
Rael sat nearby, shirtless as usual, sharpening a strange curved blade. The sound of steel on stone filled the space between their words.
"It's not always quiet," he said without looking up. "But it listens."
Kaya tilted her head. "Listens?"
He nodded. "The sea remembers everything. Joy, pain, betrayal. It keeps secrets for those who ask."
She smiled faintly, folding the blanket tighter around her. "You're... more poetic than I thought."
Rael gave the tiniest of smirks. "I've had time to think. A lot of it."
The breeze picked up, and for a moment, neither of them spoke. Just the wind. Just the waves. Just two souls on a lonely ship.
That night, as the stars scattered like diamonds across the heavens, Kaya lay on the deck with a book clutched to her chest.
Rael, as usual, was meditating—legs crossed, body glowing with a faint aura. His energy felt calm but immense, like a volcano that had learned patience.
Kaya watched him from the corner of her eye. For the first time in years, her chest didn't ache. Her limbs didn't tremble. Her breath was steady.
She sat up.
"…Rael," she said hesitantly.
He opened one eye.
"My illness. It's... getting better."
He looked at her fully now.
"No pain since we left?"
She shook her head. "None. It's like it's fading away."
He stood and walked to her. Not with concern—but quiet interest. He knelt before her, eyes glowing faintly.
"You've been touched by divine corruption," he said. "Maybe that place... that house, your past... it was part of what made you sick."
Kaya blinked. "You think it was spiritual?"
He nodded. "The body and soul are linked. And sometimes the soul gets sick before the body."
A long silence stretched between them.
Then she smiled—tired but hopeful. "You saved more than my life, didn't you?"
Rael looked away. "Maybe."
By the third morning, an island appeared on the horizon. Lush. Green. Misty at the edges. A faint line of mountains marked its center, and waterfalls tumbled down in silver streams.
Kaya leaned over the rail, eyes alight. "It's beautiful!"
Rael didn't answer.
His head tilted slightly.
His eyes narrowed.
Then—BOOM.
The ship rocked violently.
Kaya screamed as the deck tilted. She grabbed onto the mast.
From beneath the waves, something vast rose.
A shadow.
Massive.
A Sea King.
Its serpentine body crashed out of the ocean, scales glistening, eyes like molten gold. Horns jutted from its skull like jagged blades. Its mouth opened, revealing rows of jagged teeth, and it let out a guttural roar that shook the skies.
Kaya fell to her knees. "I-Is that a Sea King?! It's huge!"
The beast surged toward them, jaws wide, ready to snap the ship in half.
Rael moved without a word.
He didn't draw a weapon.
He didn't shout.
He leapt from the deck—straight at the monster.
Kaya screamed, reaching out. "RAEL!"
But he was already in the air.
He struck the Sea King in the jaw with a single fist.
A sound like thunder exploded across the water.
The beast reeled backward, shrieking, its jaw shattered and crooked.
Rael landed on the sea's surface—not sinking.
He walked calmly across the water.
The Sea King reared back, trying to gather strength for another attack.
Rael's hands crackled with dark energy—not from this world, but something older, deeper.
Then he vanished.
And reappeared on the Sea King's head.
BOOM!
A single punch. Right between the eyes.
The creature spasmed—then fell.
Dead.
The waves crashed around Rael as the massive corpse splashed into the sea, drifting away like driftwood.
Kaya stared in awe from the ship. Her heart thundered in her chest.
Rael returned minutes later, stepping onto the deck as if nothing had happened. Water slid from his boots, but he was otherwise unharmed.
She ran to him.
"You just—! It was—! I've never—!"
Rael looked at her, his voice calm. "It wasn't very strong."
She blinked. "Not strong?! It was the size of a big Ship!"
He looked out at the waves again. "I've fought Stronger one's."
Kaya opened her mouth—then shut it.
Because she believed him.
No, she knew it.
As the ship continued toward the island, Kaya sat beside Rael again, wrapping her arms around her knees.
"Promise me something," she said quietly.
He turned his head slightly.
"If we ever meet people who fear you... promise you won't become the thing they think you are."
He looked forward again, expression unreadable.
"I've already been that," he said after a long pause. "But maybe… not this time."
Kaya smiled faintly.
The wind picked up again.
And the ship sailed on.
