Chapter 2 - CHAPTER TWO: CLOSER TO TROUBLE

"It's strange how I can know exactly what every other person can think but not you. I just can't read your mind, and that's not fair," April complained.

Eva heard and broke into laughter and said, "You just need to work upon your psychic abilities."

"Huhh! Really, Eva. I think you should just cast away the 'mind block spell'."

And then there was a sudden silence in the room as if something had struck both the sisters at once."You broke the promise," Eva sounded sad.

"Yeah, I know. We don't have to talk about our supernatural powers and about our identity, but I just can't help it. It is who we are and it's never gonna change," April sighed.Eva held her hand and said, "I just want you to be safe, us to be safe. OK?"

April looked behind her at the clock and hastily got up from her seat."In this supernatural melodrama, we got late for school. Let's move."

They picked up their bags and exited the door.

They reached the car half running, and April decided to drive. They got seated. Looking at April managing things on her own always made Eva proud. She was occupied in her own thoughts when she realized April had decided to reach their school, which was around 6 km from home, in 5 minutes."Aren't you overspeeding, April?""Yes. But that's the only way we can save our asses now.""No, slow down, April. And you know there is another way, and you know it very well," Eva joked."No, I don't like doing that. And excuse me, don't tell me compelling people to our liking doesn't tell us about our identities.""It does. But we have to save our damn asses, right?" Eva laughed.

It was only after 10 minutes that they reached the school. Their school was situated on the west side of the town, more into the woods than in the town. It was the perfect place to move on into their lives, and Springfield town seemed too perfect to start over.

The sisters lived in a rented flat and worked part-time to pay off their bills and school fees. Their landlady, Mrs. Smitha Jonas, was very generous to give them a roof over their heads. Nobody in the town would have given their flat on rent to total strangers, but she took them as their godmother.Mrs. Jonas was very kind towards them and would often check up on them if they were doing fine or not. She cared like they were her own.

Hurrying through the passage of the parking lot, they entered the school premises and ran towards the assembly hall.It was only then April noticed her friends, and she gradually changed her pace from running to walking towards them."Hey guys. No morning assembly today?" April asked, breathing heavily.

"Hey… assembly will start a bit late as we have a new trustee in town and he is interested in donating something to the school. The principal and the other officials are with him," Leo was the one who answered.Leo was a very energetic boy who was always eager to help—that's what April defined him as. But according to Eva, she knew something was up with him. She knew he liked her sister more than just a friend. The way he looked at her, helped her in her problems, took her side, and cared for her in every possible way—this made Eva's suspicion super strong.

Kai and Amara were more mischievous guys who were behind every activity that could land them in detention. Though April kept a distance from them in their adventures, she did have a true connection with them and they were always by her side.

"Hi, Eva," Amara said with longing eyes.

"Hi, Amara," Eva said, half smiling.

"I think you guys directly have to go to class," Amara said shyly.

"Ohh, OK. Thank you, Amara. I didn't know that. Goodbye April, see ya!"

Eva bid her goodbye and left for her class.

"Your sister is hot," Amara gulped.

"Well, for starters, she is two years older than you, Amara. And to be honest, she will never date a jerk like you," April snapped, and everyone broke into laughter.

THE STORY NOW FOLLOWS THROUGH THE EYES OF EVA

I ran through the corridors, reaching the classroom and went inside. It was only then I noticed no teacher was in the class. I went inside and started looking for Nina, my best friend."Hey! Here!" a girl shouted from the extreme back of the class, hand waving in the air. I realized that was Nina at the second last seat, who was smiling from ear to ear. Nina was a cheerful girl who loved to have people around her and gossip about different things. But sometimes, she had the curiosity to control everything going on around her. She was a control freak, but I loved her, and she too loved me, and that was the reason we never had a fight.

I reached the back where Nina, Lisa, Rose, Joseph, and Matt were sitting."Hey, again at the back?"

"Well, Eva, the seats at the front were occupied."

"Oh, really, Nina?" Matt said and started laughing.

I knew Nina was lying. Only because she loved to sit at the back and daydream about Mr. Derek Morris, our history teacher."Shut up, you moron, Matt. You can't keep any secrets, can you?""Not from me, Nina," I laughed.

Everybody at school thought that Eva and Matt were in some sort of relationship, but it was not so. They were very good friends and she relied more on Matt to share her problems or when she really needed any advice. Matt too was very honest with her.

It was Matt's pitch that he needed April to get a part-time job at the library due to Matt's father's approach. Eva too got a job at Josie's Cafe and Restaurant due to Matt, where they both worked as helpers.

"I told you, don't rely on Matt," Rose said, mocking Nina.

"You too, all of you are jerks," Nina complained.

"It's okay, Nina. I have no problem with it."

Eva and others settled into their seats, and Eva started to read her history notes when Lisa excitedly thumped her fist on the table, startling everyone.

"Oh, sorry, I was too excited. Do you guys have any plans tomorrow?"

"Oh yeah, about that…" Nina was going to start her story.

"No, no, I will say! What are you guys doing tomorrow? It is Saturday and Joseph shifted into his new apartment all alone. And we all can have a blast!"

"Really? It's been a long time since we spent our weekends together," Nina jumped excitedly.

"Yeah, and Eva, if you're thinking about leaving April alone, you can bring her too. Leo would be there," Joseph added.

"Yeah, that's good. But no booze. We can't just drink in front of our siblings," Eva said, and everybody burst into laughter.

"Okay, the plan is on!" Rose said excitedly.

"Yes, we are going!" Nina broke every level of excitement.

It was only then Mr. Derek Morris entered, and the class got silent. I peeked towards Nina's side with the corner of my eyes and saw her half smiling, half blushing, and staring at him with her big owl-like eyes. It seemed as if she would drool any time.

The class was over within 45 minutes. I loved to attend the history class because I always had a thing for it. Maybe it was in my genes, as my father was a history professor back in my hometown. But for Nina, it was only interesting because she could daydream about Mr. Morris, on whom she had a crush.

We all gathered at the locker room to get our books for the English class.

It was only then Rose noticed a few students who were new in our school and said,"Are you kidding me? How could somebody like them be in our small town? Classy people," she smiled judgingly.

"Oh yeah, about that. Actually, they are distant relatives of the new trustee," Nina said with pride, as her gossiping session did startle and surprise us every time.

"New trustee? Are they going to settle over here or what?"

It seemed off to me. The minute I laid my eyes on that group, I knew we had moved one step closer to our troubles.
