POV: Dr. Elira Vex
The rain burned anything it touched.
Dr. Elira Vex kept her hood low as she hurried through the dark alleys of Virellis Prime. This part of the city smelled like rust and chemicals. Puddles on the ground hissed when drops hit them. No one came here anymore.
That was why she chose it.
She was supposed to be in GenCore, working, protected. Instead, she was now running from the very place she'd served for years. She had helped Kael escape, and now they wanted her dead.
Kael Riven. The boy who awakened the Spiral.
She clutched the small metal shard he had given her. It was warm, pulsing softly. The Spiral symbol glowed faintly through the wrapping. It almost felt alive.
"You weren't supposed to exist," she whispered.
But Kael had. And everything had changed.
She reached an old tunnel entrance, part of an abandoned train system. She slipped inside and turned on a device that blocked GenCore's scanners. Finally, she could rest. A little.
Elira wasn't someone who believed in myths or destiny. She believed in genes, in logic, in science. That's what made her good at her job.
But the Spiral didn't follow science. It rewrote it.
Kael was proof that something older and more powerful had been hidden from the world. And now, it was awake again.
Her wrist-link beeped.
A message played. Director Korr's face appeared, cold and angry.
> "Dr. Elira Vex. You are wanted for treason and helping a dangerous subject escape. Surrender immediately or you will be eliminated."
She ended the message.
They were coming for her.
Soon, GenCore's Reclaimer soldiers would be searching the entire city. They didn't care about questions. They were trained to erase problems. Quietly.
She looked at the shard in her hand again.
"Kael, I hope you're ready for what's coming," she whispered.
Because she might not be able to help him much longer.
But there was still one thing she could try.
One last chance.
She needed to find the only person she knew who had ever repaired a Spiral.
Someone GenCore thought was long dead.
