Chapter 42 - Hidden XP

The data didn't belong there.

Léo stared at the glyph on his private console, a ghost line of code blinking between system queries. He hadn't called it. He hadn't queried it. But there it was.

XP_Silent.Tier[undefined] : Accumulated : +3

Three points. No trigger. No source.

He tried to force a manual trace. The code shivered—then folded in on itself like a knot yanked shut.

[Unauthorized Process – Tracking Shield Active][Glitch Detected – Diagnostic Pending][Do you wish to isolate?]

He hesitated.

Yes.

The system flickered. A new entry slid across his interface:

[Hidden XP Node: Active | Class: Unlogged Merit][Category: Moral Dissonance][Definition: Points accrued from ethically silent decisions or resistance to active interference][Note: Not publicly displayed. Not accounted in standard rankings.]

He leaned back, heart pulsing against his ribs.

Hidden XP.

A score that grew not from action—but from restraint.

He ran a differential check against his last thirty quests. Nothing fit. No feedback loop, no phantom override. Except… one moment.

The argument.

Three days ago, he'd walked away from a sabotage opportunity in a node farm. A high-value quest had appeared in his feed—"Expose Corrupt Allocation Node"—but it had felt… wrong. The system had flagged the task, yet no injustice was visible. He'd declined. Quietly.

And now—this.

[XP Gained: +3 | Hidden Category – Silent Refusal Logged]

The implications tore through his thoughts.

So the system had seen. And it had judged. Just never said anything.

He opened a private stream. Pinged Mateo.

No reply.

Second ping. Then third.

On the fourth, Mateo's glyph opened. The philosopher's voice came calm, low.

You found it, didn't you.

Léo didn't answer immediately.

Mateo sighed.

It's been there since the First Revision. Kenji thought no one would ever notice.

Léo frowned. "You knew?"

No. I suspected. Clara confirmed it weeks ago.

Léo blinked. "Clara?"

She never mentioned it. Never hinted.

Because it wasn't meant to be known. Not tracked. Only felt.

He pinged Clara. She answered in seconds.

Yes, she said. I saw it first in the Hollow Grove. During a vigil. Someone wept on my shoulder for hours. No quest. No badge. But later, I found a line in my backlogs—

[XP Gained: +2 | Empathic Presence – Non-Intrusive Support]

It broke me a little. In a good way.

He imagined her hands twisting fiber into story, fabric into silence.

There's a beauty in being rewarded for not interfering, she added. For trusting someone else's rhythm.

Léo stared at the screen. "But it's not… visible. It changes everything. All the rankings. All the metrics."

She laughed. Not cruelly. Just lightly.

Maybe they were never meant to mean that much.

He ended the call.

He walked into the backlit corridors of the Observation Grove, past the Judgement Tree now dimmed, refracted by layers of uncertainty.

Mateo stood at the base of the spiral roots.

"I used to believe every moral act needed to be witnessed to count," he said, not turning.

Léo stepped beside him.

"But what if the witnessing… is internal?"

Léo hesitated. "Like self-judgment?"

Mateo shook his head.

"No. Like a silence that listens. A system that rewards you not for doing the right thing—but for not doing the wrong one, even when no one's looking."

Léo crossed his arms. "Then why hide it?"

"Because if we knew," Mateo said, "we'd start performing in reverse. We'd try to earn nothing. And then even that restraint becomes corrupted."

They stood in silence.

Then Amina's voice cut through the comm.

"This is dangerous," she said. Her tone clipped, controlled.

Léo opened the line. "You got the logs?"

"I did. You weren't hallucinating. But Léo—this is a breach of contract. The social contract."

"You mean, that we're not supposed to know?"

"That we're not supposed to optimize silence. That we're not meant to min-max restraint. It's meant to be lived. Felt. Not gamed."

[Warning: XP Calculation Parameters Exceeded | Monitoring Activated]

"Then why code it in the first place?" Léo snapped.

A pause.

Amina sighed.

"Kenji believed some things had to be buried in the system. Not hidden. Just… left unlit."

Mateo joined the thread.

"Not everything invisible is deceit."

Amina didn't reply.

Léo stepped out into the night. The synthetic bioluminescence bathed the Grove's outer gardens in soft pulses. He opened his interface again, found the new node.

[Access Hidden XP Log – User: LEO.M][Total: +21 | Breakdown Available: Y/N]

His finger hovered.

He tapped N.

The numbers didn't matter.

Only the pattern.

Only the choice.

He closed the interface.

And walked into the dark, unseen, unscored.

[XP Gained: +1 | Intentional Ignorance – Trust in System][Badge Unlocked: Not All Scores Shine]

The wind shifted.

Behind him, the Judgment Tree shimmered—soft, tentative.

A single leaf fell.

It bore no glyph. No color.

Just weight.
