Chapter 13 - Chapter 13 : Desires

The city had a different kind of hush that morning—one born not of sleep but of expectation. Clouds pressed low against the skyline, and a soft wind moved through the narrow streets like a whispered secret.

Eli had arrived early at the bookstore again, but this time it wasn't just to prepare coffee or unlock the front door. He was nervous. A quiet, persistent kind of nervous. Because something was changing—something real was unfolding between him and Alina. And the truth was, it scared him just as much as it thrilled him.

He leaned against the counter, watching the rain smear the windows. His journal sat beside him, pages fluttering slightly under the ceiling fan. The words he'd written the night before had circled in his mind all morning.

Love doesn't enter like a storm. It seeps in slowly, Through glances and half-finished sentences. It makes a home before you even notice it's moved in.

He traced the edge of the page, wondering if today would feel different—if she would seem different.

Then the bell above the door rang.

She stepped in with her usual grace, but her eyes lingered on his a beat longer than before.

"Morning," she said, voice low and warm.

"I was hoping you'd come," he replied. "Even made a version of your usual—with less sugar this time."

She chuckled and approached the counter, reaching for the cup. "You're starting to know me too well."

"I only know what you let me see."

Their fingers brushed as he handed her the coffee, and though neither commented on it, both felt the moment slow.

They moved to the window seat, and Alina tucked her hair behind her ear as she sat.

"I read something last night," she said, swirling the coffee in her hands. "It said the people we fall for often reflect the parts of us we're still learning to love."

Eli turned toward her. "Do you think that's true?"

She nodded faintly. "With you... I don't feel like I have to explain myself. That's new for me."

He watched her for a long moment, eyes gentle. "I don't need to understand everything about you to care for you. But I'd like to. If you ever let me."

She looked out the window, a small smile playing on her lips. "You say things like that and make silence feel heavier afterward."

"I don't mean to," he said, his voice barely above a whisper. "It just happens when I'm being honest."

She met his gaze again, her eyes softer than he remembered them.

"I've been writing about you," he admitted.

She leaned in slightly. "Poetry?"

"Something like that."

"Will you read me one?"

He hesitated, then pulled out the journal. He flipped to a page toward the middle.

If the sky ever asked me what color peace was, I'd say it's the shade in her eyes when she forgets to guard them. The way she stares into nothing, And I stare into her.

Alina blinked slowly. "It's beautiful."

"It's true."

She reached out, touched the edge of the page with her fingertips. "You make me want to be softer with myself."

They sat for a long time, trading stories and slow smiles. The world outside blurred beneath the rain, and in that little corner of the city, it felt like time folded in on itself. Just the two of them, and everything unspoken blooming between glances.

At one point, Alina said quietly, "I haven't told anyone this, but... I've never really let someone in before. Not all the way."

Eli nodded. "Me neither."

They exchanged a glance. No declarations. No rush. Just understanding.

When she stood to leave, she lingered at the door.

"I'm glad I came back," she said.

He smiled, the kind that reached every part of him. "Me too."

---

That night, Eli didn't sleep. He lay with the journal open beside him, hand resting on a page still wet with ink.

There's a girl who walks like she's holding back an entire storm. And still, she smiles like she doesn't know the sky watches her.

I want to be the reason she stops running.

---

And Alina, across the city, stood on her balcony under a faint drizzle, her fingers brushing the side of her coffee cup.

"I think I'm already not the same," she whispered to herself.

And it didn't scare her as much anymore.
