Chapter 11 - The Lieutenant

Jason tried to look tough as he entered the police precinct. He had made a call to the lieutenant earlier and she had agreed to meet him for a few minutes. He followed the officer who directed him towards the lieutenant' s office. He tried not to look surprised when they passed by her office and instead headed to another room.

Jason held his breath as he saw that woman in a sports bra and shorts, hitting rapid blows onto a punching bag. The loud succession of thumps it kept making told him how hard her punches were. He couldn' t help but stare at her physique. Goddamn. She was a sexy chick. The scars on her body were distracting though.

The officer beside him uncomfortably cleared his voice, "Lieutenant!" Megan instantly clasped the bag with both hands to prevent it from swinging far and glared at the man, "What did I say about disturbing me, Matt?" He averted his eyes, "Sorry. He' s here—" "Right. Thanks. Leave us now."

Jason gazed at her as she held a water bottle and drank a generous amount. She wiped her mouth with the back of her hand and asked, "Are you just gonna stand there? Talk." "I…uh, there' s someone I need to find. Can you help me?" "Who? Why?"

"She' s…a woman who owes me cash. She' s deserting me and I need to find her." He hoped that would be enough to get her to help him. He knew he was playing with fire here. It seemed Kassandra has not yet told her about the divorce thing and that was at least a good thing.

She leaned back against a pillar, wondering if he was being serious right now, "Go file a complaint like any normal person would. Now leave. I have more serious matters to tend to." He gritted his teeth, clenching his fists, "Hey, I know you don' t like me but I' m your best friend' s husband. If you' re helping me, then you' re helping her."

When she burst into a laugh, his heart began pounding in his chest. It was a mistake to come here. She casually walked up to him, "You' re right. I don' t like you. And you know what else you should bear in mind? You don' t get to use Kassandra to get things that you want. Look how desperate you are. Did she kick you out by any chance? I wouldn' t be surprised."

He fumed, resisting the urge to punch her pretty face, "How dare you." She arched an eyebrow, a small smile appearing on the corner of her lips, "So it' s true. It was long overdue. You should know…she' d not spare a second to think about you. She probably never cared for you for all we know." "Shut the fuck up!" He brutally swung his fist at her and she easily performed an outward block, deflecting it. She chuckled, shoving him back, "How lame. Before I break both arms, get out of here."

She watched him leave in a fury and she returned to her punching bag. What a sore loser. She wondered if Kassandra was alright though. Last time they met for drinks, she seemed her usual self. She should give her a call, just to make sure.

"We are the worst!" Emma cried, burying her head in her sleeve as Jillian was embracing her on the other side. She was stuck between them, sitting on the carpet as she persistently reassured them that she was alright. "You' re not." Emma insisted and sobbed, "Why didn' t you tell us?"

Kassandra sighed heavily, resting her head against the wall behind her, "Because I knew this was exactly what would happen. You' re both being highly unproductive right now and I cannot allow that." Jillian tightened her grip around her and exclaimed, "Shut up, Cass. Just shut up."

How ridiculous it was. To be sitting on the floor in her office as she tried to comfort these two. Funny how they seemed more affected by the divorce than she was. It would probably be a mistake to tell them she was more troubled by Serena Chase than Jason.

Thankfully, her intercom buzzed and Charles said, "Ma' am…uh, there' s a call from a certain Billy who claims to be your father?" Kassandra struggled, trying to stand up, "Let me go, damn it." They loosened their grips around her and she pressed the intercom button rapidly, "Direct the call to my office."

The office phone began ringing and she answered, keeping an eye on these two idiots. Emma had made a mess of tissue papers in her office. "Hey pop. What' s up?" "Kassandra! Sweetheart, I know you' re busy but spare your old father some time and come celebrate the glorious ole Little Owl bar tomorrow."

She was puzzled, remarking how excited he sounded, "What are you talking about? What glorious?" Emma suddenly cried, "I' m sorry we weren' t here for you!" Jillian quickly hushed her, rubbing her back and Kassandra hastily blocked the receiver' s end, pouting at them disapprovingly.

She sighed heavily, speaking again, "Oh no. Nothing' s wrong, pop. Ah the bar? Alright. I' ll be there. I hope you did nothing ridiculous. I told you that bar is falling to pieces. Yes. Yes. I know how I' m not allowed to talk ill of your Little Owl… Yeah, I' ll…tell Jason too. Right. See you then. Love you too."

She ended the call, giving her attention back to her nurses and slowly knelt beside them. She caressed Emma' s cheek and softly said, "I know you' re here for me and I assure you, you two are my best friends but I wouldn' t want you to worry about something I don' t care anymore. It hurts, yes…but I can handle it."

Jillian wanted to slap her, "You can' t handle it, Cass. This is not something you should do alone. You dumb, very dumb woman." She sighed as Emma kept holding onto her hand now, "Fine. Then what do you suggest?"

Jillian grinned, rubbing her hands together maliciously, "Let' s fuck him up." Cass sat back on her heels, arching an eyebrow, "I already did. I threw him out of my house right away, cut out his funds which is basically mymoney. I emailed his boss and his colleagues about what he has been really doing instead of working and called his parents and his sister to tell them about what a shitty person he is. He also owe me the $250, 000 that I had lent him a month back and since he refused to sign the divorce papers, he' ll be going to court soon. I' m absolutely done with him."

They stared at her. Jillian dreamily said, imagining how fast she already did all of that, "Woah…you' re amazing and kinda...scary." Emma flung her arms around her and laughed, "God. I love you! You' re the best!" "Of course I am. Now please. I really need you two to get it together."

She was relieved when they finally left her alone…with her thoughts. She might have been over with Jason but…she had no idea what to do about Serena. That woman was making a mess out of her. More than anyone ever did. And thing is…after the way she behaved with her last time, she was certain that she would never come back to her.

She tried to convince herself that she was never going to see her again but she never knew that it would be harder than she thought and right where she was, she could simply not accept that fact.

Later on, as she unlocked her car to go back home, she heard the loud noise of a motorbike approaching. She leaned back against her Range Rover, a smile already forming on her lips as she guessed who it was. The rider stopped right beside her, taking off her helmet and shaking her head to let her hair flow. "The hell are you doing here?"

Megan laughed, "Geez. Is that a way of greeting me? I' m supposed to be working right now."

"Everything alright? How' s your wound? Let me see." She walked beside her, raising her shirt slightly to observe the injury. She applied slight pressure next to it and Megan hissed in pain, "Hey!" "Um, almost healed. Don' t do anything crazy."

She teased, "Oh if I get broken again, you' ll just have to patch me up, doctor." Kassandra lightly punched her arm, "Don' t joke about that. How are things going?" She looked down at her helmet, "I' m following some leads on the sex traffickers but so far, I got nothing. Since we busted one of their gangs, they' ve been cautious. They' re keeping to the shadows. Anyway, I' m not here for that. Jason popped in my office earlier. He wanted my help to find a woman who soi-disant owes him money. I sent him off."

Kassandra' s heart began pounding in her chest. Was he looking for Serena? Was she missing? Megan furrowed her brows, peering at her, "You seem…worried?" She sighed, "Maybe. I don' t know. I' m filing for divorce by the way. That asshole cheated."

Megan laughed softly, "You were waiting for something like this to happen, weren' t you? Be honest, doc. Come on. I know you." She smiled, "You make me feel so bad sometimes, lieutenant." She shrugged, running her hand in her messy hair, "That retard didn' t deserve you. We both know that. I' m off now."

She leaned forward, pecking her on her cheek and Kassandra nodded appreciatively, "Thanks for checking on me." "Anytime babe. Let' s call up Cat and have some drinks again sometimes, mmh?" "Sure."

Kassandra watched her ride away as fast as she had come. If there were two people who knew everything about her, then it was Megan Brooks and Cattleya Kir. Two people who she knew she could trust with her life.
