Chapter 5 - Chapter 5: The chase

My heart is beating out of my chest as sweat drips down my temple.

I'm on my morning run in a pathetic bid to clear my head. I know it sounds crazy, but my alphas...

I feel like I've known them forever.

Like something in my very essence instinctually recognises theirs, like i'm finally home.

I never felt this way with Dune. With him i always felt the need to be this demure, perfect girlfriend.

I never felt wanted, just as i am.

MOON WALK PACK

DUNE

"What are you talking about?" I ask Shelenda as a vein ticks at the side of my head.

"Your incompetence is disgusting! " she screeches

"That wench is alive!"

Shit.

She's like a pesty cockroach!

I was sure she would die that night, but apparently not.

I walk up to Shelenda and place my arms on her shoulders, rubbing in a soothing manner.

I take her chin in my hand and stiffle my irritation as i brush my thumb over her lips.

"I'll take care of it babe, trust me"

"You were supposed to get rid of her that night! You know our positions as the current alpha and Luna aren't secure while she's alive!"

I laugh and drag my palm down my face. I just have to put up with this whiny bitch for just a little longer.

"What're you scared of, Shelenda? That she'll be back to claim her birthright? "

Shelenda pouts and turns away. Gross.

"We both know she is way too weak and cowardly for that."

I say, inching forward so she has no choice but to move backwards, towards the desk.

"Don't you worry your pretty little head about this" i push so she's seated on the edge of the desk.

"Like i said before, I'll take care of it." I drop to my knees and drag her skirt up her thighs.

"And i won't fail you this time."

I roughly spread her knees and a pungent fishy smell wafts out.

Oh brother.

The things i do to be alpha.

ANITA

I can't stop thinking about Anthony and Asher's proposition.

Just the thought of them sends tingles throughout my entire body.

I'm out on another run in a useless attempt to forget, but the truth is i can't.

I know they are mine.

Know it with every fibre of my being.

Somethings are still unclear though. The mating mark i got on the day i met Dune has mysteriously disappeared.

I don't know how to explain any of this.

Sweat drips down my temple as i start to jog back towards my apartment.

Suddenly my ears prick and i hear heavy footsteps, pounding towards me.

I run faster, glancing behind me to see a tall figure cloaked in a black hood.

They're gaining in on me, so i swerve right, away from the direction of my apartment and head into a park.

It's nine pm so there's no one else around.

Did i just dig my own grave?

A strong hand grabs my arm and ordinarily that would make me panic, but instead it sends a wash of calm through my body.

I know who it is...

Asher.

What's he doing here?

He scoops me into his arms, still running.

"What're you doing here?" I pant, struggling to catch my breath.

"Don't worry about that ma bichè, I'm just glad you're safe"

His soft voice does wonders for my racing heart.

"You're okay, aren't you? " he asks, gripping me tighter, "You're not hurt?"

"No, I'm-" suddenly it occurs to me.

I grip his shoulders, searching his eyes while he runs.

"Anthony? " i ask. It seems they each never go anywhere without the other.

Did he stay back to face my attacker? What if he's in danger?

Asher just chuckles, like my concern is amusing. I smack his chest as my cheeks turn red.

"He is the alpha of the most revered pack, ma bichè, do you really believe he does not have the capacity to handle your puny assailant? "

"Well, he didn't look so puny to me!" I grumble and pout.

Since when do i pout?

Asher smiles sweetly and winks as he mouths, cute.

I flush a deep red and bury my face in his chest.

It's solid and warm and it smells of sandalwood.

And to think that this man could be mine!

"Where are you taking me?" I ask.

" Somewhere safe. So we can figure out what this is all about and why you're being targeted."

"And Anthony will meet us there? You're sure?" I press.

"I couldn't forgive myself if he got hurt because of me, Asher"

He growls softly at the sound of his name coming from my lips, his eyes flashing a deeper colour.

"Trust me. He's in no danger at all." He replies, squeezing my waist.

He stares deep into my eyes as he says his next words, as though to make sure the gravity of them sinks into my essence.

"Anita. You are our mate. Ours to love. Ours to protect. Ours to pleasure, when the right time comes of course." He winks.

"Make no mistake, we would- both of us- walk through hell and back to make sure you're safe. Don't you ever doubt it, okay?"

I nod meekly.

He's slowed down into a jog now and my eyes go droopy as exhaustion creeps in.

Before i give into sleep it occurs to me that this is the most I've ever heard Asher speak.

Oh my, I'm in trouble.

ANTHONY

I'm seething. Thirsty for blood.

I can't wait to bash that motherfucker's face in.

I'm just glad Asher has taken our mate to safety because i really don't want her to see me like this.

I'll be sure to make him regret crossing me.

I leap into the air and my joints crack and realign before i land on the ground in my wolf form.

I need to hunt tonight.

Stupid coward bolted the moment he perceived the presence of a powerful alpha.

He couldn't have gotten far though.

I sniff the air for his putrid scent.

Bingo.

The narrow minded twit is hiding behind a tree.

Like that'll stop me.

I bound towards his general direction and he must hear me because he gives up on hiding and starts to run.

Wrong move.

In one leap I've pinned him to the ground.
