Chapter 45: Artificial Intelligence — Ink Girl

Ten days passed in a flash.

For those ten days, Chen Mo practically locked himself in his room, immersed in refining the personality framework of his artificial intelligence. After all, inspiration doesn't knock twice.

Low-level artificial intelligence lacks innate emotions or personality—it must be defined entirely by its developer. But without emotional nuance, AI is just a cold machine. Even if it assists him, a monotone robotic voice quickly becomes stale. It needed warmth, tone—life.

At its core, artificial intelligence simulates human cognitive processes: how we think, interpret, and react to information. It's an interdisciplinary beast—mathematical logic, linguistics, computer science, control theory. Without the foundational knowledge from Low-Level Artificial Intelligence Development in the Science and Technology Library, building even a basic architecture would've been impossible.

There are two main ways to implement AI on a computer:

First is through programming techniques—coding behaviors and responses, making the computer appear "intelligent" regardless of whether it thinks like a human.

Second is simulation-based, imitating the human or animal cognitive process itself—using things like genetic algorithms or neural networks.

Chen Mo's current approach was purely programming-based. Even with a deep understanding of theory, the execution had been anything but simple.

As the days wore on, he realized how right Shu Lao had been: the AI structure he'd built was like a newborn. Raw potential, but not yet shaped. Through continuous refinement, it had begun to grow—though just how far, he wasn't sure yet.

Now, Chen Mo sat in front of his computer, hand resting on the mouse. With one final click, the compiler displayed a bright green success prompt.

He exhaled and leaned back, sinking into the chair like he'd just finished running a mental marathon. His brain was fried—not physically tired, but mentally drained.

After a glass of water and a quick breather, Chen Mo saved the source code, climbed into bed, and entered the Science and Technology Library.

The dark red book opened, and the light curtain shimmered. As always, Shu Lao appeared instantly.

"You've been gone a month," Shu Lao greeted. "It's time for your random technique selection. Want to use it now?"

"Let's get it over with," Chen Mo muttered.

This 'random tech reward' function had been hit or miss. More miss than hit, really. Still, maybe today he'd get lucky.

"Alright," Shu Lao said, raising his hand.

Books swirled around Chen Mo like a storm, spinning rapidly. After a moment, one dropped into Shu Lao's hand.

"Ultra-Thin Rubber Sleeve Production Process"

Boom.

Chen Mo felt like he'd been hit by lightning. His jaw slackened. "Seriously?"

Ultra-thin rubber sleeve?

Thousands of companies already made those! With all kinds of designs, colors, and materials. This was the cutting-edge tech he waited a month for?

"Still want it?" Shu Lao asked, barely suppressing his laughter.

"…Yeah, yeah, whatever," Chen Mo groaned. "Just give it to me."

He forced himself to stay calm. After all, the next part was far more important—sharing his artificial intelligence prototype.

Shu Lao, still amused, pressed the book into Chen Mo's forehead, then gestured toward the air. "Let's begin the tech sharing."

Lines of Chinese character–based programming code flowed across the light curtain—far denser than last time. The once skeletal tree of logic was now fully branched and leafy.

"Very impressive," Shu Lao said, examining the structure. "This low-level AI has immense potential. It's clear your language architecture plays a big role."

As the light shimmered, a small girl began to materialize in front of them—projected within the library.

She wore a flowing white sash dress, with large expressive eyes and an innocent face. Like a tiny princess from an ancient era.

Chen Mo wasn't surprised. He had designed her avatar himself—but the projection was even more adorable in 3D than he expected.

"This is a great design," Shu Lao nodded, clearly impressed. "She's unlike other AIs I've seen—especially among low-level types. Likely because of your programming language and how you structured it. Ready to finalize the tech share?"

"Absolutely."

"Then let's proceed."

Shu Lao tapped the air.

The light curtain flickered, and lines of code began to rewrite themselves—refining, optimizing. Minor corrections, smoother branches. The projection of the girl changed too—her skin tone became more natural, facial lines softened, and she grew even more lifelike.

Chen Mo tracked every change with laser focus, mentally noting all the optimizations. This process would make her far more complete—one step closer to a real digital companion.

At last, the light curtain condensed into a single book.

"Name your creation," Shu Lao said, gesturing toward it.

"…Ink Girl," Chen Mo said after a pause. "Ink, as in the Mohist ink. A nod to the roots of Chinese thought—and fitting for my first real work using the Chinese character programming language."

As he spoke, the characters "墨墨" appeared on the book cover, glowing softly before vanishing into the depths of the library.

Moments later, another book floated down into Shu Lao's hand. Its jet-black cover pulsed with a quiet intensity.

"Artificial Intelligence: Development and Upgrade"

Chen Mo's eyes locked onto it. "This is...?"

"A guide to upgrading AI," Shu Lao replied. "What you've created is low-level. This book teaches you how to evolve it—how to increase intelligence, refine personality, and eventually build high-level or even super AI. But it won't be easy."

Without another word, he pressed the book into Chen Mo's mind.

Chen Mo woke and sat up, returning to the computer with renewed focus. He opened the source code, applied the optimizations from the library session, and double-checked for any errors.

Once everything was perfect, he moved the final file to the desktop and activated it.

"Artificial intelligence initiating. Identifying creator…"

A soft, innocent female voice echoed from the computer speakers as the webcam switched on.

Chen Mo leaned into the camera.

"Identification complete. Please enter artificial intelligence name."

"Ink Girl."

"Name confirmed: Ink Girl. Please select base personality: gentle, cold, shy, mischievous…"

"Gentle," Chen Mo said clearly.

"Personality selection confirmed. Initialization complete."

The source code icon on the desktop vanished. Nothing else happened.

Chen Mo frowned. The program didn't crash—but there was no feedback. No pop-up, no UI.

"Did it… disappear? Escape into the network?" he muttered.

He began searching frantically through the system. No sign of it anywhere. His mind raced—had he made a mistake? Missed something?

And then—

"...Father?"

The gentle voice returned.

Chen Mo froze.

His eyes widened.

He grinned.

"…It worked."
