The central courtyard was transformed into a vibrant assembly zone. Floating monitors displayed the names of new teams, glowing in pale blue over circular stone pillars. Students gathered in clusters, buzzing with conversation and competitive curiosity.
Kaen leaned casually against a pillar as names lit up in the sky. His team remained mostly unchanged—Zian, Mira, Leon, Kyel, and Rayden. But to their surprise, two new names joined the list: Selene and Rin.
Selene, tall and confident, wore a stylish coat embroidered with gold trim. Her long silver-blue hair and sharp violet eyes commanded attention. She approached the group and introduced herself with a polite nod. "Selene. Top of the class from Helios City. Also, Mira's older sister."
Mira nearly dropped her water bottle. "What? Since when were you enrolling here!?"
"Since I got bored of corporate life," Selene replied with a faint smirk. "Besides, Father thought it best someone keep an eye on you."
Next came Rin, more reserved but equally striking. A researcher's badge was pinned to her hunter uniform, and her glasses glinted under the sun. "I'm not much of a fighter… but I know how to keep people alive. I specialize in barrier tech and magical reinforcement."
Kaen gave both newcomers a nod. "Welcome to the team."
Lirien, now officially their instructor, arrived with a crisp clap of her hands. "Training begins tomorrow. You'll be tested not just on combat, but on leadership, survival, and strategy."
She looked straight at Kaen. "You especially. No more holding back."
He gave a lazy shrug. "I never do."
Before the group dispersed, the Headmaster's voice echoed across the academy grounds. "Attention all students. This year's final exam will not be held on campus. Details will be shared later, but prepare for a challenge unlike anything before."
Whispers erupted.
Kaen narrowed his eyes, sensing the shift already.
Something had begun. Again.
And the shadows welcomed it.
