Chapter 9 - The Truth Emerges

"Whoa!"

At those words, Zhu Zixiao inhaled sharply.

My goodness, the daughter of the mayor and the head of the Health Bureau!

Fang Zhiyan really did rescue someone important.

What a pity that no one was around to give him the credit he deserved.

In that moment, Zhu Zixiao felt a wave of sympathy for Fang Zhiyan. He pat Fang Zhiyan on the shoulder. "Hey, Fang, I feel for you, man."

Fang Zhiyan smiled wryly. "It's fine. She has her good luck, and we can't compete with that; we can only accept it."

Hearing this, Zhu Zixiao grew frustrated.

"That Gu Tao is really infuriating! He uses his status as Director Jin's apprentice to snatch away all the good opportunities."

"Now he's trying to steal your glory too; what a scoundrel!"

Fang Zhiyan glanced at Zhu Zixiao, surprised at his apparent sense of justice.

But he wasn't willing to simply hand over his hard-earned credit.

What rightfully belonged to him wouldn't go to anyone else; no one could take it from him.

With a grin, Fang Zhiyan responded kindly to Zhu Zixiao before stepping out of the office.

While Jin Mingcheng could help Gu Tao steal away this credit, Fang Zhiyan's actions had witnesses.

Could he truly manipulate those witnesses' testimonies?

Taking advantage of the lunch break, Fang Zhiyan hurried to the site where he rescued the girl earlier that day.

This time, he wasn't wearing his white coat; sporting only a mask, he headed straight for the pharmacy.

Upon entering, he cheerfully greeted, "Hey there, do you remember me, boss?"

The pharmacy owner glanced over and then broke into a smile. "Oh, it's the young doctor! What brings you here?"

"How's that girl doing this morning?" Fang Zhiyan asked, pulling down his mask to help the owner recognize his face.

"She's doing well; she's out of the danger zone now."

"That's great to hear." The owner smiled and gave Fang Zhiyan a thumbs-up. "Young man, you really have skills; you're impressive!"

"Thanks!" Fang Zhiyan replied, pulling out some cash from his pocket. "I came to pay for the supplies I used this morning—the plastic tubing, knife, disinfectant, and saline."

Hearing this, the owner quickly stopped him. "Oh, no way! You can't pay for that!"

"Taking your money would imply I'm looking down on you."

"You saved a life; I did the same. That's all that matters. You don't need to pay me—there's no need for that!"

The owner's attitude was extremely warm, pulling Fang Zhiyan toward him again. "You're just so young, but your medical skills are fantastic!"

"Which department are you working in at the hospital?"

Fang Zhiyan smiled and took out his employee badge, pointing to his name. "I'm from the emergency department. My name is Fang Zhiyan."

"Oh, emergency department, Fang Zhiyan?"

"Got it! If I ever get sick, I'll come find you!"

After chatting for a bit, Fang Zhiyan decided he had imposed enough and hurriedly left the pharmacy.

In the afternoon, Fang Zhiyan continued to accompany Cao Chong on ward rounds.

While Cao Chong inspected the patients, he occasionally posed questions.

Zhu Zixiao and Yin Jing stumbled through their answers, often not providing complete responses.

In contrast, Fang Zhiyan answered confidently, gaining deeper satisfaction from Cao Chong's keen interest in him.

Yet, it also left Cao Chong feeling increasingly guilty.

Zhu Zixiao, on the other hand, was quite unhappy. How could Fang Zhiyan's clinical foundation be so solid? It was undoubtedly embarrassing for him.

He felt that the attention Fang Zhiyan garnered was unwarranted when everyone else struggled to respond adequately.

However, any jealousy Zhu Zixiao felt quickly dissipated whenever Fang Zhiyan addressed him as "Zhihao."

He relished being called that, even as he was miffed on behalf of Fang Zhiyan.

Eventually, by late afternoon, Luo Yun, the girl in the single room, regained consciousness.

Tang Ya, the head of the Health Bureau and a concerned mother, rushed to her side.

Gu Tao also promptly stepped forward, pretending to examine her.

But Tang Ya's frown signaled her disbelief at how feigned his concern was.

Had this man really been the one to save her daughter?

"Yun, you're awake? You scared your mother half to death!" Tang Ya expressed, worry etched across her features.

Luo Yun managed a weak smile. "Sorry for worrying you, Mom."

"How did that glass hit you? It left a gash on your forehead. If it doesn't heal correctly, you'll be scarred for life!" Tang Ya fretted.

Luo Yun's brow furrowed slightly in concern.

As the two conversed, a man in an administrative jacket strode confidently into the room.

Gu Tao turned to see who it was, and his heart skipped a beat—the man was none other than Mayor Luo Dongqiang!

"Dad," Luo Yun called out as she sat up, and Luo Dongqiang quickly rushed to support her.

"My sweet girl, lay down; don't move too much."

Luo Dongqiang turned toward Gu Tao and nodded slowly.

"Young man, I hear you saved my daughter?"

Gu Tao's heart raced, but he steeled himself and nodded.

"I happened to see it on my way to work."

"Well done! Thank you," Luo Dongqiang said, shaking Gu Tao's hand.

This compliment brought a broad smile to Gu Tao's face. "It's thanks to the guidance from my teacher that I knew how to handle the situation."

"Mayor Luo, it's all part of my responsibilities as a doctor."

Luo Dongqiang nodded appreciatively before turning to his secretary behind him.

"Xue Shan, please send my thanks to Doctor Gu Tao, and also to the owner of the pharmacy who generously provided supplies this morning."

Xue Shan nodded. Having investigated the situation, he was already aware of the key details.

A young doctor at the TCM Hospital had encountered Miss Luo's accident and had gone to the pharmacy to procure the necessary supplies to save her life.

The pharmacy owner was certainly deserving of gratitude.

Later that afternoon, Xue Shan headed to the pharmacy to deliver Luo Dongqiang's message.

Once there, he informed the owner of his purpose, presenting him with a token of appreciation and a banner.

Seeing the banner, the owner beamed with delight.

"Ha! Young man, you don't need to thank me; thank Dr. Fang instead."

"Ah, that young doctor you're speaking about was quick and efficient, maintaining calm throughout the process—his medical skills were exceptional!" the owner praised.

At the mention of Fang Zhiyan, Xue Shan paused. "Fang? As in Fang Zhiyan?"

"Yep, that's the one—Fang Zhiyan, the doctor who saved that girl in our emergency department." The owner confirmed.

Xue Shan narrowed his eyes, lost in thought.

Urgently, he asked the owner for the specifics of what had transpired, and the owner happily recounted the entire story once more.

Meanwhile, back at home, Fang Zhiyan arrived to find his little sister, Fang Zhixia, rushing toward him like a homing pigeon.

"Brother!"

He caught her with a smile. "Whoa! You seem heavier. Have you been eating too much meat lately?"

Upon hearing this, Fang Zhixia instantly squirmed.

"I haven't! I'm not fat, just a bit taller!" she protested, her brows knitted adorably.

Fang Zhiyan couldn't help but chuckle at her reaction, the worries of the day momentarily lifted as he enjoyed the warmth of family.
