The phone in my hand felt suddenly heavy as the dial tone echoed in my ear. Amelia Vance's desperate voice had been replaced by silence, and for a moment, I stared at the device in disbelief.
He had hung up on me. The audacity was staggering.
"What happened?" Dr. Webb asked, seeing my expression.
"He hung up," I said, my voice tight with fury. "That arrogant little nobody actually hung up on me."
Lucas coughed again, more blood spattering across his shirt. His breathing was becoming increasingly labored, and his skin had taken on an alarming grayish tint.
"Ma'am," Mrs. Chen said quietly, "perhaps we should focus on getting the governor to the hospital—"
