Start 3 2 1
The ship shook—Kad and Giel looked at me, and we could hear the other kids shouting, "What's going on?"
Then a scream: a massive bird was diving toward the ship. If it hit, everything would be destroyed. But the island—our home for the next three years—was already in sight. Not far now.
The Commander jumped high into the air. In midair, he stepped forward four times—walking through the sky—and placed himself directly in the bird's path. He raised his hand, ready to strike, but the bird didn't slow down. No—in fact, it got even faster.
"Commander, get out of there!" many shouted. But he didn't move.
The bird and the Commander collided.
Blood sprayed—but wait, it wasn't the bird's.
The Commander had been impaled. His entire left arm was gone. He fell into the sea.
The bird soared upward, then twisted into a deadly nosedive.
Silence.
Then—BOOM.
A thunderous crash. The impact shook the whole ship.
We're sinking, I thought.
I had to jump. "Giel! Kad! What do we do?!" I shouted.
We saw the bird circling back for another strike, this time from the side.
I screamed, "We have no choice—we have to swim to the island!"
We backed up, took a running start—and jumped.
