I stepped forward to meet Daphne, determined to handle this confrontation with dignity. But before I could reach her, a tall man with slicked-back hair and a self-important smile intercepted me.
"Mrs. Ricardo," he drawled, blocking my path. "Or should I say, the 'illegitimate Johnson girl' who somehow snagged herself a Ricardo?"
I recognized him as one of Liam's college friends. I'd seen him at enough campus parties to remember his snide remarks.
"Excuse me," I said coolly, trying to step around him.
He moved to block me again. "You must be quite talented to have Nathaniel Ricardo put a ring on it. Care to share your techniques with the class?"
I felt my cheeks burn but kept my expression neutral. "I need to speak with someone. Please move."
"So high and mighty now," he scoffed. "Don't forget where you came from. The help's quarters, wasn't it?"
