"Ding! Host, time is limited. Please make your choice!"
"Option One: Become a Muggle..."
"Option Two: Possess Obscurus power..."
The system, apparently growing impatient with Qin Yu's silence, repeated itself.
After a moment's thought, Qin Yu chose the second option.
Money was tempting, of course. But the allure of magic was simply irresistible—not even ten million pounds could compare.
In his memory, the Obscurus appeared only in the Fantastic Beasts films, never in the original Harry Potter era. That made sense: this dangerous force was born from the twisted pain of young witches and wizards oppressed by Muggles. Once the magical world separated from the Muggle world, children grew up in safer, happier circumstances. The Obscurus lost its breeding ground and faded into near extinction by the time of Harry Potter.
Besides, those who possessed Obscurus power—Obscurials—rarely lived long, their strength as volatile as it was deadly.
But if the system promised to help him overcome the negative effects... why not take a gamble on magic? To choose a normal, wealthy Muggle life would be a waste of this miraculous transmigration.
"Ding! Host has completed Initial Choice. System binding commencing!"
Three... two... one...
Binding successful!
As the system's voice echoed in his mind, Qin Yu felt a strange, indescribable energy slowly unfurling within him.
It was both intoxicatingly powerful and dangerously wild.
From this moment on, Qin Yu was a wizard—one blessed (and cursed) with Obscurus power.
He could hardly contain his excitement.
…
Meanwhile, little Hermione had seen Qin Yu suddenly "zone out" and dashed downstairs to fetch her parents.
Mr. Granger hurried up, urging Qin Yu to lie down as he performed a quick check-up.
Though a dentist by trade, Mr. Granger knew a thing or two about basic neurology. He shone a flashlight into Qin Yu's eyes, checked his pupils, felt his forehead, and gently asked about his symptoms.
Qin Yu cooperated fully—after all, this was Hermione's father, and he radiated warmth and kindness.
After the examination, Mr. Granger smiled, his tone light. "Everything looks perfectly normal... except for one thing. You seem a bit hungry."
Right on cue, Qin Yu's stomach let out a loud, protesting growl.
The sound sent little Hermione into a fit of giggles. She beamed at Qin Yu. "I'll get you my favorite cookies! I just know you'll love them!"
With that, she dashed off, her footsteps pattering down the stairs. Moments later, she returned, clutching a tin of cookies.
"These are for you—you can have them all!" she declared, trying to sound magnanimous, though a hint of reluctance flickered in her eyes.
Qin Yu was famished. He accepted the tin with a grateful nod and began munching away.
At some point, Mrs. Granger appeared with a glass of milk, pressing it into his hands so he wouldn't choke on his enthusiastic eating.
Once Qin Yu had slowed down, Mr. Granger leaned in, voice gentle. "So, young man, what's your name? Where do you live?"
Qin Yu paused, thinking quickly. "I only remember my name is Qin Yu. As for where I live... I can't quite recall."
He put on his best lost-and-pitiful look.
He had no choice—he was an Undocumented Person in this world, with no real past to speak of.
Mrs. Granger's heart melted at the sight. She turned to her husband, concern etched on her face. "Do you think little Qin Yu has lost his memory? Should we take him to the hospital and have Dr. Allen check for any hidden brain injuries?"
Mr. Granger nodded. "I was about to suggest the same thing." He turned to Qin Yu, his expression sincere. "I forgot to introduce myself—I'm David Granger. This is my wife, Jenny Granger, and our daughter, Hermione. I was the one who accidentally hit you the other day, and I'm truly sorry. I'll schedule a full neurological exam for you with a specialist. If anything's wrong, I promise I'll take responsibility."
Qin Yu waved his hands in protest. "It's really all right. I probably ran into the road without looking. I feel fine now—I'm sure I'll remember everything after a few days' rest."
Privately, he couldn't help but sigh at his own rotten luck. Being run over twice in one lifetime—what were the odds? Still, he thought, Now that I have magic, let's see who dares run me over again!
Mrs. Granger gave him a warm smile. "If you can't remember where your home is, you can stay with us for now. We'll help you find your family, bit by bit."
She had always wanted a son, and this gentle, clever boy with an Eastern face seemed like fate's answer—a little miracle, or perhaps, as her husband would say, just a stroke of "good fortune."
…
After talking with Qin Yu and seeing he was in good spirits, the Grangers relaxed and went downstairs.
Hermione stayed behind, curiosity burning in her eyes.
Once her parents were gone, she fixed Qin Yu with a stare. "How old are you, anyway? You look about my age. And how did you just blurt out my name earlier? Do you go to my school? I've never seen you before—and there aren't many schools around here. Actually, I don't really talk to other people much…"
She rattled off her questions, but by the end, her voice had grown small and her expression a little forlorn. Clearly, school life wasn't all sunshine and rainbows.
"Age is just a number," Qin Yu replied, matching her gaze. "As for school... I can't quite remember. I might have forgotten some things, but I haven't forgotten what I've learned. I bet I know just as much as you do!"
He blinked at her, dodging her questions with practiced ease. The less he explained, the better.
Hermione met his eyes, a proud spark lighting up her face. "Really? We'll just have to see about that! We can have a contest sometime!"
Qin Yu smiled inwardly. So her competitive streak really did start young.
But at least he'd managed to steer the conversation away from dangerous territory.
…
And so, Qin Yu settled into life with the Grangers.
The very next day, Mr. Granger took him to see Dr. Allen. The exam results were perfect, and as for his memory, well—that would just have to come back in its own time.
Days passed. The Grangers showed no sign of wanting Qin Yu to leave, nor did they pry into his past.
They noticed that, with Qin Yu around, Hermione laughed and talked more than ever before—a change that brought them quiet joy.
At first, Hermione had been wary of Qin Yu. He seemed too clever, too good at making her parents smile.
But today, something happened that changed her mind.
She'd just left school when she noticed, yet again, that someone had stuck a note to her back. It read "Chatterbox" and "Shut up."
Qin Yu, bored at home, had gone for a stroll and happened to pass by her school. He saw Hermione emerging in tears, the cruel note still stuck to her.
"Who did this?" Qin Yu peeled off the note, frowning.
Through her tears, Hermione glanced at a group of girls by the school gate. They stuck out their tongues and made faces at her.
Qin Yu reminded himself that, even in a child's body, he still had an adult's mind. A grown man shouldn't stoop to bickering with children.
But seeing the tears on Hermione's cheeks, and the mocking laughter of those girls, a surge of righteous fury flared in his chest.
He asked, "If you could do anything to them right now, what would you do?"
Hermione sniffed, then muttered, "Hang them up in that tree so they can't get down."
Qin Yu nodded. "That's not too much to ask."
Something inside him seemed to stir. He shot a glance at the girls—and, in an instant, they were lifted off the ground, their clothes catching on the branches of a nearby tree.
The sudden, impossible event sent the girls into a chorus of shrieks and screams.
