Chapter 60 - Sin #15 — False Witness

"You shall not give false testimony against your neighbor."

— Exodus 20:16 (NIV)

Bearing false witness is more than just lying—it is using your words to intentionally distort the truth in a way that harms others. It is one of the Ten Commandments, and its damage is not only personal but spiritual, because it destroys trust, justice, and fellowship.

What Makes False Witness Sinful?

False witness is the act of giving misleading, exaggerated, or outright false information, especially in situations of accountability—like courtrooms, conflicts, or reputations. It includes:

Lying about someone's actions or intentions.

Exaggerating events to paint someone in a worse light.

Twisting facts to shift blame or protect yourself.

Giving false reports to leaders, pastors, or authorities.

Scripture warns us:

"Do not spread false reports. Do not help a guilty person by being a malicious witness."

— Exodus 23:1 (NIV)

This sin doesn't only affect the person being lied about—it damages entire families, churches, and communities. Truth is the foundation of justice; without it, chaos reigns.

Why It Matters

God is truth. Jesus is truth. The Spirit is called the Spirit of truth. To bear false witness is to align yourself against the very nature of God, and it reflects the work of Satan, who is the father of lies (John 8:44).

"A false witness will not go unpunished, and whoever pours out lies will perish."

— Proverbs 19:9 (NIV)

Even when done in secret, false testimony has eternal consequences. Whether it's to save face, win an argument, or damage someone else's standing, lying under the mask of truth brings judgment.

Reflection Questions

Have I ever spoken untruthfully about someone to protect myself?

Have I exaggerated, omitted, or bent the facts to win a dispute or prove a point?

Have I repeated a story about someone without knowing the full truth?

Have I judged someone based on another person's false report?

Do I fear God enough to let my words reflect His truth—even when it costs me?

Challenge: Be a Voice of Truth

Truth is not optional—it is essential. Even when it's uncomfortable. Even when it's unpopular. Speak the truth with boldness and integrity. Don't let your tongue become an instrument of injustice.

"Speak the truth in love."

— Ephesians 4:15 (NIV)

"Do not lie to each other, since you have taken off your old self with its practices."

— Colossians 3:9 (NIV)

Prayer of Repentance

"Lord, I repent for every time I have spoken falsely—whether to protect myself, harm another, or gain advantage. Cleanse my lips and renew my integrity. Teach me to love truth as You do. Let every word I speak reflect Your justice, Your holiness, and Your mercy. May I never bear false witness against my neighbor. In Jesus' name, Amen."
